I think Focalors death was the closest ive ever come to crying at an archon quest, the entire scene building up to it and everything that Furina went through beside it… it genuinely made me pull for Furina
i didn't cry in the nahida & rukkadehvata scene, but BOY did i cry during that archon quest... maybe im a little biased because i knew furina was my favorite as soon as i layed eyes on her but 😭
None come close to ever make me cried in Genshin ngl. Because I know, one way or another, Hoyoverse would always find an excuse to resurrect them, and their most common method is the "Twin clone method" that been used since Inazuma with EI/Mikoto, Ruka/Nahida, and Focalor/Furina. The only game so far that legit make me cried is Arthur Morgan from RDR2 that's shit is real hurt because you truly lost him. Only few of his legacy was left behind. The rest was going to waste.
Depends on the context. It's more that so far, Honkai Star Rail hasn't had a real death. We had plot twist deaths where it wasn't final that they were dead (Tingyun's not confirmed for example) while we just started getting confirmed deaths for genshin. Honkai Impact deaths though, man are they traumatizing.

Not sure if he actually made it since that was the dream we where caught in, and finally Firefly as Mei mentioned that due to how she accessed Penacony she would need to experience a "real" death to leave I ain't even gonna get started on Honkai Impact lamo, atleast Genshin and Star Rail don't have any dead playable characters yet as far as I'm aware XD

Reasoning Rooftop scene (Firefly) (That was sadder than the actual fake out tbh) 💀 Aventurine (The cutscene with him and little Kakavasha because it reminded me of the overlapping of Otto and young Otto's voice during the Dreamy Euphony concert.
Theres a himeko in hsr and genshin too I can imagine traveler going to go through the past of natlan and witness murata's death (aka murata himeko) Imagine the reason why everyone is cursed into never leaving natlan is everyone who steps foot in there gets trap into a loop into the past of natlan

Focalors death is something else. We don’t really have an emotional connection to her, and it doesn’t matter, because we have a strong connection to the water dragon and Furina. And through there eyes, through there feelings through there thoughts and through there dreams - we saw just a sample of how amazing Focalor was. And in those moments when she reached out to comfort her friendly dragon and bring peace to her troubled double, we witnessed a mother’s love that changed everything. Truly just excellent story telling.
Anyone who doesnt feel empty or want to cry at Focalors death dont appreciate the scene whatsoever. It destroyed me for a good while. Neuvillette's expressions and reactions are what got me the most, but god that dance and everything right before it, too. I wanna cry again.
Ngl Furina's, while not gruesome, was definitely the saddest one. Like in star rail, we kinda expected them to some degree but genshin's had more motive and story to it
Genshin fans are suprised bc hoyoverse killed a character in front of everyone FİRST TİME IN GENSHIN so thats Why Genshin fans are suprised. But in any honkai game, when a character from the MAIN CAST gets Killed they say “Wow they killed an other character” like a character getting killed is not something so emotional to me anymore 😭
You know a death that actually has themactical implications for a story, and isn’t just death for the sake of death? Gojo’s, Nobara’s, Nanami’s, the “deaths” in Genshin lack any narrative significance aside from one. Yes you read right one, and it ain’t teppei.
Genshin deaths will likely not ever be gruesome, mostly because of the game's rating. I believe it's designed so that young teens should be able to see everything the game has to offer from a rating perspective. We are lucky that the game is made to be safe for younger audiences otherwise things could be interesting😂

fake, you didn't cry for Firefly. We didn't know much about her, and our meeting with her was very brief. She has no stake whatsover in the story at that moment. She's clearly a set up for a plot, and hey she's alive no?
I think genshin deaths are sadder, to me at least, because the traveler is almost always just an observer, separate from the world in which the tragedy takes place, you cannot intervene, you cannot help them, just watch them suffer, grieve, and mourn. A sole witness, helplessly watching as those we grow connected to are broken down by the world and left alone and in pain. and as someone with a very strong sense of empathy and justice, being forced to see others suffer while helpless to intervene affects me far more than being in pain myself.

Not to mention, meeting Firefly for such a short time then suddenly getting 'killed' doesn't really make players that really attached to the character whereas the Genshin deaths has a greater and longer 'build-up', which leads to a more emotional feeling. Simple explanation: Genshin deaths are sadder and much more emotional than the Firefly one, why? Ask this yourself: Would you feel sadder if a friend you knew for a week died or would you feel sadder if your long time best friend/childhood friend died? I hope you got my point
@eightyeight2379 You never met Rukkhadevata once until you ended up going with Kusanali I'm pretty sure, and that was quick. The sad part is feeling bad for Kusanali. Focalors you quite literally never met. She was a surprise at the end of the story for Fontaine. And then she died immediately. Saying those are long time best friends is off. And genuine personal bias. Focalors was sadder than Rukkhadevata to me, just because of Furina as a whole. Furina made that sad by her entire story arc throughout Fontaine. And Neuvillette I guess also made it sad. Tbh, the saddest death in Fontaine was probably Meluse and Silver. So really, are they truly that much different? Plus, Rukkhadevata was technically already dead when her "death" happened, she was just erased from irminsul. Also, Firefly's story has depth if you aren't ignorant. Firefly is the last of her kind being the weapons of glamoth's iron calvary, aka the SAMs. And after losing all of her entire kind, became a stellaron hunter, wanting to go from just a weapon, to a human. But she has Entropy loss syndrome which means she will die really fast, so there isn't much time left for her to be human exactly. Which she explains the entropy loss syndrome part before she died, the rest was theorized off of her being SAM, which turned out to be true, and proven recently with her trailers. That's an okay explanation of Firefly's death. To say Firefly's death was not sad, because it lacked depth. Is admitting you know basically nothing about Firefly, and you don't know much about the game as a whole.

Also, I rewatched Firefly first appearance quest due to this YT short and it was literally a first meeting and then death FOR JUST A FEW HOURS so I still stand with my given example, but instead of the death of a 1 week long friend, I'd like to change it to a 'not even a day friend'. Cutscene and sequence-wise, Firefly death is sudden and is very forced for obvious plot reasons in future patch. To quote a comment from someone, "Genshin deaths makes more sense because we have a few knowledge or background about them while HSR deaths are sudden, just for the shock factor". I am assuming that they are talking about the build-up for the story until the cutscene, which really fits the scenario with atleast Tingyun and Firefly.

In 2.1, they show us that you cannot die in the dreamscape, meaning Firefly and Robin's deaths were to let us know that. In 2.2, we had the whole ENA's dream thing to switch it over. In 2.2, we also had the three deaths thing. It's not shock factor, it's good writing that you cannot understand because Paimon isn't screaming it into your ear 4,294,104 times just to let you understand one single thing. Plus, to make their players sad is good writing, and to shock them, it makes them want to know what's actually happening in Penacony's case with death. If you were in Fontaine, and a character dissolved (temporarily or permanently) when you didn't know how primordial seawater worked, you would be confused what happened, would you not? You would want to know more about what happened to that character, or multiple, would you not? It's to make you scared of death, and make you wonder if someone else will die to it, as Robin did. Plus, the depth of that part having Firefly die early, was to not shout she is SAM in the first two hours of the planets story. It's good writing, you just didn't understand anything. Also, once again, you didn't even meet the two characters in question you are talking about at all, or until they died. Which is why I'm saying Melus and Silver were better candidates for a sad Genshin death. Especially with the depth, and Navia's reaction, plus other characters. Kusanali showed sadness for one part of the story from my knowledge, then forgot about her entirely due to the lore of her erasing. Focalors was only even known to exist by Furina, and later Neuvillette and Traveler. Indirectly and directly, respectively. Once again, Furina and Neuvillette alone made that death way better than it would have originally been without those two. Just like Firefly's death was quite dependent on knowledge of HSR, and the SH, and Especially the rooftop scene before her death. Also, you knew Focalors existed for less than an hour besides Furina. Rukkhadevata you only knew existed, but thought she was dead till you got there, until she erased herself, never having you meet her directly beforehand. So all of your points also hurt your claim. Rukkhadevata is the only one you knew for longer than a quest, and you didn't actually KNOW her. Just heard of her. So either way, it wouldn't be too crazy, especially knowing she sacrificed herself creating Kusanali from doing so. It's pretty clear.
It wasn’t the death that made it dramatic it was the plot building the character up then the character dying, I have never cried so much during Furina’s death, the whole ARCHIN quest building up her storyline, making her a better person, then out of nowhere she just dies. I cried so hard that day
he didn’t die he just got slashed by Acheron into the Nihility Black Hole (something like that) and thanks to Acheron, she saved him from the Harmony Curse that Sunday put on him + Aven said he wasn’t ready to die yet after looking at Ratio’s note
Ngl Focalors death was by far the most sad thing in genshin.. And if we talk about the saddest death in all of hoyo games then himiko from Honkai Impact 3rd was the saddest and the most well written and portrayed one.
I got so used to Genshin not killing the playable characters and HSR killing then unkilling them that when I started playing HI3, it was a really damn hard slap to the face. Over there, if a character dies, they're DEAD. (Himeko, as far as playable characters go, and then Litost and Ajita for non playable. Not too sure if Otto's gone forever, haven't finished APHO just yet)

All the HSR death got nothing to these heart destroying moments that Only Genshin and Honkai 3rd have: 1. Himeko's Last Fight and Sacrifice 2. Nahida's Goodbye to her Predecessor 3. Furina's Past and her crying 4. Focalor's execution And the greatest of them all: 5. Kiana's Entire story
Tbh the only emotional death on Genshin is the death of the hydro archon, when you look at any honkai game you will see that they dont care they just kill the main cast.

when focalors died I cried but in honkai I didn't feel anything I think it's because genshin has been there longer and the characters are unique whit q sad story background they make you fall in love whit them
I get the "been there longer" argument because the HSR characters also have sad backstories that make you fall in love with them. We don't know everything about Firefly other than that she has a chronic disease but most recently, we got the tragedy that is Aventurine.

HSR definitely wins in the shock department, but the emotional damage sustained after watching Rukkhadevata essentially delete herself from history will never leave me. That is hands down the worst one for me.
I think both are very well made. Genshin makes the perfect atmosphere to make us feel miserable sad and painfull, HSR just hits us like a truck, with brutal deaths that we can actually see, unlike Genshin, where we don't see the sword actually crushing Focalors (FORTUNATELY) and the characters turn into golden dust when they die. I actually just saw Firefly's death in my game, not too long ago, and I was completely shocked. While Genshin just builds up the scenery, HSR shows it in a brutal way to make us freeze, not believing what just happened. BOTH INCREDIBLE.

In honkai star rail every quest someone dies, so I rather genshin deaths because they aren't that repetitive (is actually kinda hard a character die in genshin, so it makes it saddest).
Genshin's deaths are more dramatic so they really hit you in the feels but I kinda prefer the one's in Star Rail because they really aren't afraid to show it.

Focalors death just hits different
Focalors death is something else. We don’t really have an emotional connection to her, and it doesn’t matter, because we have a strong connection to the water dragon and Furina. And through there eyes, through there feelings through there thoughts and through there dreams - we saw just a sample of how amazing Focalor was.
And in those moments when she reached out to comfort her friendly dragon and bring peace to her troubled double, we witnessed a mother’s love that changed everything.
Truly just excellent story telling.

Anyone who doesnt feel empty or want to cry at Focalors death dont appreciate the scene whatsoever. It destroyed me for a good while. Neuvillette's expressions and reactions are what got me the most, but god that dance and everything right before it, too. I wanna cry again.

You know a death that actually has themactical implications for a story, and isn’t just death for the sake of death? Gojo’s, Nobara’s, Nanami’s, the “deaths” in Genshin lack any narrative significance aside from one. Yes you read right one, and it ain’t teppei.
Genshin deaths will likely not ever be gruesome, mostly because of the game's rating. I believe it's designed so that young teens should be able to see everything the game has to offer from a rating perspective. We are lucky that the game is made to be safe for younger audiences otherwise things could be interesting😂

I think genshin deaths are sadder, to me at least, because the traveler is almost always just an observer, separate from the world in which the tragedy takes place, you cannot intervene, you cannot help them, just watch them suffer, grieve, and mourn. A sole witness, helplessly watching as those we grow connected to are broken down by the world and left alone and in pain.
and as someone with a very strong sense of empathy and justice, being forced to see others suffer while helpless to intervene affects me far more than being in pain myself.
Genshin death are more emotional especially the Focalor’s execution and Rukkhadevata’s goodbye 😭💔

Not to mention, meeting Firefly for such a short time then suddenly getting 'killed' doesn't really make players that really attached to the character whereas the Genshin deaths has a greater and longer 'build-up', which leads to a more emotional feeling.
Simple explanation: Genshin deaths are sadder and much more emotional than the Firefly one, why? Ask this yourself: Would you feel sadder if a friend you knew for a week died or would you feel sadder if your long time best friend/childhood friend died? I hope you got my point

She was a surprise at the end of the story for Fontaine.

And Neuvillette I guess also made it sad.
Tbh, the saddest death in Fontaine was probably Meluse and Silver.

Plus, Rukkhadevata was technically already dead when her "death" happened, she was just erased from irminsul.
Also, Firefly's story has depth if you aren't ignorant.
Firefly is the last of her kind being the weapons of glamoth's iron calvary, aka the SAMs.
And after losing all of her entire kind, became a stellaron hunter, wanting to go from just a weapon, to a human.
But she has Entropy loss syndrome which means she will die really fast, so there isn't much time left for her to be human exactly.
Which she explains the entropy loss syndrome part before she died, the rest was theorized off of her being SAM, which turned out to be true, and proven recently with her trailers.
That's an okay explanation of Firefly's death.
To say Firefly's death was not sad, because it lacked depth.

Cutscene and sequence-wise, Firefly death is sudden and is very forced for obvious plot reasons in future patch. I am assuming that they are talking about the build-up for the story until the cutscene, which really fits the scenario with atleast Tingyun and Firefly.

In 2.1, they show us that you cannot die in the dreamscape, meaning Firefly and Robin's deaths were to let us know that.
In 2.2, we had the whole ENA's dream thing to switch it over.
In 2.2, we also had the three deaths thing.
It's not shock factor, it's good writing that you cannot understand because Paimon isn't screaming it into your ear 4,294,104 times just to let you understand one single thing.
Plus, to make their players sad is good writing, and to shock them, it makes them want to know what's actually happening in Penacony's case with death.
If you were in Fontaine, and a character dissolved (temporarily or permanently) when you didn't know how primordial seawater worked, you would be confused what happened, would you not?
You would want to know more about what happened to that character, or multiple, would you not?
It's to make you scared of death, and make you wonder if someone else will die to it, as Robin did.
Plus, the depth of that part having Firefly die early, was to not shout she is SAM in the first two hours of the planets story.
It's good writing, you just didn't understand anything.
Also, once again, you didn't even meet the two characters in question you are talking about at all, or until they died.
Which is why I'm saying Melus and Silver were better candidates for a sad Genshin death.
Especially with the depth, and Navia's reaction, plus other characters.
Kusanali showed sadness for one part of the story from my knowledge, then forgot about her entirely due to the lore of her erasing.
Focalors was only even known to exist by Furina, and later Neuvillette and Traveler. Indirectly and directly, respectively.
Once again, Furina and Neuvillette alone made that death way better than it would have originally been without those two.
Just like Firefly's death was quite dependent on knowledge of HSR, and the SH, and Especially the rooftop scene before her death.
Also, you knew Focalors existed for less than an hour besides Furina.
Rukkhadevata you only knew existed, but thought she was dead till you got there, until she erased herself, never having you meet her directly beforehand.
So all of your points also hurt your claim.
Rukkhadevata is the only one you knew for longer than a quest, and you didn't actually KNOW her. Just heard of her.
So either way, it wouldn't be too crazy, especially knowing she sacrificed herself creating Kusanali from doing so.

It wasn’t the death that made it dramatic it was the plot building the character up then the character dying, I have never cried so much during Furina’s death, the whole ARCHIN quest building up her storyline, making her a better person, then out of nowhere she just dies. I cried so hard that day

i could be wrong since i dont play GI myself (i want to just never had time), but it also seems like HSR wont shy away from actually showing the death scenes, they dont cut-to-black or pan away. sure, it's very obvious what happens w/ Focalor for example, and both games have very emotional death scenes, but based on whats showcased here, we actually see the killing blow in HSR and physically watch a character die

HSR definitely wins in the shock department, but the emotional damage sustained after watching Rukkhadevata essentially delete herself from history will never leave me. That is hands down the worst one for me.
I think both are very well made. Genshin makes the perfect atmosphere to make us feel miserable sad and painfull, HSR just hits us like a truck, with brutal deaths that we can actually see, unlike Genshin, where we don't see the sword actually crushing Focalors (FORTUNATELY) and the characters turn into golden dust when they die. I actually just saw Firefly's death in my game, not too long ago, and I was completely shocked. While Genshin just builds up the scenery, HSR shows it in a brutal way to make us freeze, not believing what just happened. BOTH INCREDIBLE.
