I can personally attest to Lithium batteries smelling of bubblegum In my experience they kind of always do? But you have to be directly smelling them. Though, when they're damaged the smell is unmissable.
"Regular" batteries are more stable. People ofthen throw LiPos from their old phones into the same bin. I've been told this is being frowned upon as sometimes they are even bloated and this could start a fire. But still, compared to the LiPos we use in airsoft, these old cellphone batteries are even much smaller...

Could you not dispose of a lipo in a "battery dedicated bin/place" ?
