I think that was kind of the point of Jesse’s arc. He had self esteem issues because of his parents which caused him to think he was dumb but chances are he actually has a very high IQ and just has ADD. His little brother is a prodigy so he may have had similar pitentisl but just went down a bad path.
Sometimes, Walt is being dumb. He could just have told Jesse that the chemicals in the hydrofluic stuff would not react, rather than saying "You're stupid, listen to me"
Honestly, Walt is being dumb for using hydrofluoric acid in the first place. Sodium hydroxide would have been much better (and also much easier to come by).
The last part of this video actually shows a crucial part of Jesse's character. Jesse isn't stupid. He was always capable of learning, he just never tried until later in his character arc.
I was about 20 years old when this show aired and I had the biggest crush on Jesse. At the deepest part of him, he was a kind soul, lost in a difficult world. He lacked love and affection from his parents, and didn’t know his role in life. Of course using substances isn’t the right way to deal with hardships, but it’s easily available and when you’re young, it’s very hard to know how to overcome pain without a proper role model.
He doesn't understand anything about chemistry outside of the simple process of cooking meth and he only got good at that by copying what Walt did. There even is an entire plot-line about how he can't do the most simple thing when trying to teach the Mexican cartel how to cook.
Yeah he could replicate Walt's meth perfectly but I doubt he understood how all the steps actually worked and what each step did on a molecular level. He just followed steps. We saw that when he went in Mexico and the scientists made fun of him for not knowing how to make hydrofluoric acid

Like, one way to really stick it to Walt, if Jesse so desires, would be if Jesse advanced far enough to get a doctorate in chemistry with a dissertation on, say, enantiomer-selective reductive animation reactions, because Walt doesn’t even have a doctoral degree if I recall, so Jesse can gloat about it over him.
What we learn from this investigation ist that even the most learning resistant student can become highly skilled and knowledgable if their education is hands-on enough.

Jesse is my favourite character hands down. Because yeah, hes dumb as shit but hes got a good heart like when he looked after that ginger kid in that crack house. Not old that but through at the series you can see that hes learning and progressing with chemistry. Its so cute 🥺
