I hate using this cliche, but the hits that you've are "the soundtrack of my life." They've actually been so seminal and influential in my life that they have made me realize my life's purpose. Everytime I listen to LOUD, I get so inspired and I think: "these are the feelings that I want to give to the world with the things I create" and "I want to create things out of my imagination that makes others feel blissful and euphoric like how What's My Name? makes me feel." I remember the imperial era of pop music where the songs were so good that people who were not even into pop music were into pop music. Think about this: Adele, Katy, Gaga, Ke$ha, Drake, Rihanna, Nicki, Bieber, Selena, Britney, Avril, Taylor, Beyonce, Miley, Bruno, P!nk were ALL releasing music at once in 2011. And top of all of this, you had internet viral hits such as Friday by Rebecca Black, Gangnam Style, Call Me Maybe, The Harlem Shake, Party Rock Anthem. We were eagerly anticipating the fashion, music and videos that Riri, Katy and Gaga were going to bestow. I will never forget when I was at summer camp and a group of girls had their iPod touches refreshing the page for Gaga's Alejandro video waiting fo the video to be dropped, but one of my all time favorite memories from this time was when I got on the bus one day and EVERYBODY was singing "on na na, what's my name?" at the top of their lungs! Why don't we have this excitement for music anymore? Maybe I am just romanticizing the past and not listening to the right things (too deep in Spotify), but the number one hits we have today are not NEARLY as good as we had ten years ago. It seems like artists today either don't have good illuminati contracts (haha) or are not as focused, intentional, and intense about creating timeless bangers that last a lifetime as they were ten years ago. I attend one of the most elite universities, and I swear, the white frats (and the hood niggas alike) fuck with Rihanna's music. Every other song at frat parties is a Rihanna song (especially S&M... white people REALLY love that song). I think it's dope how the general public almost universally worships Rihanna especially since doesn't seem attention seeking (Kardashians), or like she's trying to put up a wall/front (Beyonce) or like she's pretentious (Taylor). She's just Rihanna... honest, effortless, chill, low-key, dope asf, and just an overall good ass person. Ester and Rihanna have taught me to be and love myself, let the naysayers say what they're going to say, but especially let the success of what I do (my life) speak louder than my words. Anyway, thank you for changing my along with my generation's lives for the better, Ester!!
