- TURN: Washington's Spies FILMING LOCATIONS | DECODING Scenes Filmed in VIRGINIA (2023) | Colonial Williamsburg, Westover Plantation, Shirley Plantation, Tuckahoe Plantation, Patrick Henry's Scotchtown, Historic Petersburg, Virginia
TURN: Washington's Spies was a hit television series about the Culper Spy Ring. A covert intelligence network that operated during the American Revolutionary War gathering intelligence on British activities and providing valuable information to General George Washington and the Continental Army. The ring played a crucial role in aiding the American cause during the war.
The story of the Culper Spy Ring has been popularized and romanticized in various historical accounts, books, and television shows, such as TURN: Washington's Spies.
In our latest capsule, we set out to find many of the filming locations seen throughout 4 seasons of the hit television series.
We do an extensive search for TURN: Washington's Spies scenes that took place all throughout Colonial Williamsburg, at a handful of historic plantations in Virginia including, Westover Plantation, Shirley Plantation, and Tuckahoe Plantation, in a well-weathered historic district deep inside Petersburg, Virginia, and on the grounds of one of Patrick Henry’s homes in Virginia.
Is the history of the show entirely accurate? Not always and some liberties were taken to enhance the show’s narrative but for any fan of dramatic storytelling, history, and the American Revolution, like us, you will most definitely enjoy this series!
Join us as we embarked on a 3-day journey during the Summer of 2023 to track down and find some of the filming locations throughout Virginia that are seen in the hit show, TURN: Washington’s Spies.

I’m sitting in a hotel 1 mile outside colonial Williamsburg after 4 days seeing everything they had to offer. I was so happy to see this come up on my feed. It is one of the best vacations I’ve been on. Loved Turn. Sad it ended so soon.
Such a great series! Hope you enjoyed the video and thank you for commenting!🎩
I watched some of the series, Turn, a few years ago. Absolutely loved it. 🥰 ❤❤
Thank you, thank you, thank you Scott and Sarah for doing this! TURN: Washington’s Spies is by far my favorite series of all time. It was brilliantly done and, like always, so was your production. I’m not usually a fan of “filming location” videos on YT. But your video is a masterclass in how to do them properly with compelling subject matter tied to actual historic sites and short show clips. Again, can’t thank you enough!!
Thank you Chad for your awesome words! So glad you liked it!

This was very fun! I adore the ‘Turn’ series, never having watched it at time of release but since have streamed it… then checked it out from the library! Great series and it’s cool seeing the locations. Williamsburg seems very cool and I’m very into the story of the American Revolution.
Thanks much! So glad you enjoyed. Williamsburg is an amazing place, you would love it!🎩

Thank you! Really glad you enjoyed! Love the series too!🎩 Merry Christmas!
Thanks for this very interesting Turn tour of series locations , many happen to be in nearby areas I’m in ? Petersburg history dates way back , was also last battle of the CIVIL WAR? Many films have been shot there & other nearby areas ! There has been little change there since those times!
Love this series! I have rewatched 3 times. Major Andre (JJ Feild) was my favorite character/actor. Wish more people knew about it! Thanks for all this background information! Fascinating!
You’re very welcome! Thanks for watching!
Great video! Thank you. I was there the day they filmed in Yorktown. Could you show us that also? I loved the show and the series. Thanks again! (I was living in Maine during "John Adams" and in VA during this! Lucky me)
Thanks for this well done video. Really enjoyed it! We're heading to Williamsburg next month to celebrate our anniversary and our honeymoon there 25 years ago. We will definitely be checking out those James River plantation locations, which we have never visited. I'm going to have to re-binge TURN again before we go. 🙂
Thank you! Sounds like a great anniversary trip. The plantations will be a nice additional experience during your visit. Congrats to you both & thanks again!
Phenomenal!! This production is so beautiful, educational, entertaining. I would have paid for this! Do you have a patreon?
Thank you for your words! Yes we do have a Patreon you can find on the About section of our channel, or in the description of the video. Thanks again!!
Expertly done! I hope to see you cover the Yorktown Battlefield or the Williamsburg Battlefield--as a history lover, I would thoroughly enjoy a video made by you covering those locations
Thank you Mikael!
Have you considered hosting a tour of Williamsburg? I went this summer and the only tour available was on slavery. It was difficult to get a pure informational tour.
Honestly Marcy no i have not!😊Thank you for mentioning and watching!
As I watch your videos I’ve come to appreciate the hard work you put into these. Great stuff! All the best, God bless!
WOW !!! So great ! Love it !
Such a great show! Very neat being at the various locations!
Another absolutely spectacular and well detailed video! Thank you for all the time and research you and Sarah put into each video. I want to watch “Turn: Washington’s Spies” all over again now. 🖤
Btw….. loved your join or die shirt. I have a huge tavern painting with “join Or Die” done by Kathy Graybill who did a lot of the Colonial Williamsburg tavern signs also.
Glad you liked it and my t-shirt! Your tavern painting sounds awesome. Thanks Danielle!
I definitely enjoyed it. Yes, I have 8 of her tavern sign paintings. Thank you. 🖤
Oh when did the streets get paved ? I remember the shell, sandy streets . This is fascinating, thank you for showing the plantation shots from the series.
You are very welcome! Its been quite a few years now since they paved DOG Street. Thanks for watching!🎩
Great looks! Curious if you or anyone has found where blandford battle was done?
I do know they also shot a lot of scenes in Yorktown
Henrys wife was kept in the basement with mental health issues
Yes such a sad story!
Still waiting for them to release the 4 th series on dvd....I can't understand what the holdup is
