  • Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday signed a bill blocking most kids from social media websites, setting up an expected court battle that could prevent the legislation from ever taking effect.
House Bill 3, passed by lawmakers with bipartisan support this month, forbids kids 13 and younger from creating social media accounts and requires the platforms to seek out and remove their profiles. Kids 14 and 15 would need parents’ consent.
The legislation also blocks all minors from adult websites, requiring all visitors to prove their age before viewing content.
It’s not clear which media platforms would be affected by Florida’s legislation, which takes effect on Jan. 1, 2025.

Might as well be trying to pass an anti-masturbation law. Who is going to spy on those children all day? I definitely wouldn't have stopped using social media as a kid just because some religious crank politican wanted me to. Utter waste of time for show, nothing but spectacle.

This is insanity! What even qualifies as 'social media' according to him?! Is it Discord? Is it RUclips? If so, literally every kid there is that's able to use a phone is on one of them. There goes tons of revenue for RUclips and others I guess, they will probably either backtrack on this bill immediately or the companies will not enforce it.

The legal age minimum is already 13 years old. So if your are 12 and under you are already violating social media platforms terms and conditions. With this bill ages 14-15 will require parental consent for use. ID verification has already been implemented in other States.

It has nothing to do with the first amendment. Freedom of speech is for people to complain TO the government about unfair laws or laws needed and about the government itself, which is why it is PART of the first amendment and NOT its own amendment.
Our forefathers wanted us to have that freedom to complain to the government, because under the "tyrant" King George III, they would've been arrested, tortured, and publicly executed for TREASON just because they complained about their king. Even today, China, Russia, Middle Eastern countries, etc have NO SUCH FREEDOM.
