  • With a large number of people working from home for the next few weeks (including myself) I thought a "Do Not Disturb" indicator would be a fun project build.
    It's built using an ESP8266 and some neopixels.

    I've an outlook addin vsto source code if you want it to get it to plug directly into outlook (although it's remarkably easy to connect to Office 365/EWS nowadays). I've done something similar with a nano and 4 LEDs over usb Com ports that can easily be adapted to send over wi-fi. Sure cute at the end by the way. Her Irish is awesome for a 3 year old!

    Not sure if this helps but I had similar problems with an older version of the hazzzah making a wifi connection. I eventually got it working by adding these 2 lines just before wifi.connect. Maybe worth a try.
    Wifi.persistent(false);
    Wifi.mode(WIFI_OFF);
    Wifi.begin(said, pw);

    I've never been able to use MDNS on ESP8266/ESP32 with windows, even with Bonjour :-(

    I would suggest adding another esp8266 to have some physical buttons instead of using a browser, so the 2nd unit controls the first one.

    I need this for when I’m recording videos, although I could have made my own version but I was too lazy to do it so far... so I will probably be too lazy to make this too.

    I'm gonna just use tasmotizer and flash a wemos d1 mini. I can then call the on off LED through Alexa. Thanks for the vid! :) liked and subbed.

    Out of curiosity and maybe someone can guide me into some sort of direction. How would I build a low power RF receiver (433mhz or nrf or so)?
    I guess transmitting the trigger multiple times and waking an ESP / Arduino up every few seconds to check for a signal isn't really power-efficient and would create quite a dealy. Are there user / maker friendly ICs that can be "trained" to a specific signal and then wake a Microcontroller up or so?

    Cute little Irish lesson at the end. Kids really make you go 'wow' most days.

    🌲 wires? 😀 I also thought that you already showed this idea a while ago but I was not sure until you said it. Didn’t you have all those 18650 cells from your wedding lights project?

    An interesting project. I can see all sorts of variations instead of the lights. I think I would make a miniature railway semaphore. If the arm is up, I'm busy. Do it with a servo and have it sleep in between operations to save the battery.
    On the subject of very young kids and language, it seems that they learn very easily if they start young. My years ago I worked on a project in Paris with an American who had brought his family as wee would be there for about 3 months. His wife was Dutch, and they had a 3 year old daughter, who was at a French pre-school. When I first visited I was struck by how she thought I was French and spoke to me in French. But she also spoke Dutch to her Mum and English to her Dad! At one point I realised that she was trying to translate between us despite us all speaking English. It was fascinating. Her Mum thought that she had decided that each adult had their own language!
