I was at the game in the north bank but didn't get involved as id been slashed across the back 2 weeks earlier by a yid down Tottenham high road. West ham took a hiding that day yes they had a real good go but were surprised We were proper up for it that day. Early to mid 80s we had one of the naughtiest fims around. Thats fact.

I was a Gooner season ticket holder for years from mid 70s to late 90s. West Ham/ICF were ruthless but the Arsenal didn't chicken out. However, I witnessed darts, kung-fu stars, sharpened 'coins', steel balls, etc being thrown into the Gooner, but some of the stuff got thrown back. 1973 Arsenal were away to West Ham and the visiting Arsenal fans, including me and my mate, were tucked away to the right of the goal, surrounded by coppers. Sure enough after Arsenal scored the missiles came in fast and hard, there were Arsenal fans with kids and some quite old Gooners too, after Arsenal scored a second the more vulnerable Gooners slipped away, as the missiles were launched again. Half time came and more Gooners took the prudent path and buggered off home. The size of the Gooner support was reducing, and when West Ham pulled one back, a sizeable part of the Gooners escaped. With about 5 minutes left me and my mate decided to do the sensible thing and head for the tube station. Well got out of the stand and were walking towards the large gates when we heard "There they are", wishing to keep our boyish good looks, we scarpered. Through the gates we ran and hopped onto a bus that was passing as the ICF came through the gate. We were lucky to get away without a scratch. There were fights and often the innocent were hurt, but at that time football violence was out of control. Weirdly it makes fond memories of all the home and away games, whether there was fighting or not. There was a sizeable crowd from around Slough that supported different clubs but as soon as we were at Paddington waiting for the train home, we were all mates, no fighting, just talking and bragging.

Absolute bollox!!! I was in the northbank I was next to the fella who let the smoke bomb off!! Pushed arsenal down to the bottom even some got on the pitch and fair enough they come back up at us in the top corner avenell road side of the northbank and had a proper go and it was a proper tear up they were fuming and up for it !! Then another firm of West Ham (canning town) come in from the other side of the northbank and it went again with arsenal in the middle and getting attacked from both sides!! Arsenal were proper game that day but too many people have got terrible memories and yeah and that was the start of the skirmishes in Bethnal Green Hackney road etc !! Who remembers the beehive pub on Roman road arsenal got in there and got done by the under 5s smoke bomb thrown in the door and arsenal got done in there !! Arsenal caught us out at Plaistow one year and we come unstuck and they got in the west side Upton Park early doors (the only firm to do it ) and that was short lived for the herd !! But I will say Arsenal don’t get the credit they deserve and are right up there and on their day are a handful!! More then I can say about the yids

Few of my family ( Arsenal) were in there that day . Honest account was West Ham came running down stairs kicking and punching men kids and women like they did a lot in those days. But Arsenal were ready this time , Arsenal regrouped and went ballistic bashing up all the West Ham in the northbank , the ICF were only saved by a police cordon. That’s actually truth from that day . West Ham know it too . They never tried it again . Arsenal were at Upton Park in 83/84 season and called West Ham on and both mobs went for it . It was part of the day when going to a match in them times , just like a pie and a pint .
A lot of the time it was instigated by the local police in them times.
Holloway police station used be rivals with Tottenham police and they used to have to join forces in policing both grounds in which they used to encourage home supporter's fighting away supporter's .
The police used have banter with one another about who's firm got done on the weekend , in fact there was a crazy Arsenal police officer that was the heavy weight police boxing Champion , him and his other officer friends would give you a good slap if you didn't show up for it.
In the Clockend was a special holding pen that police used to put unruly supporter's in until the end of the game. But they could choose how many home fans and away fans could be placed in there. I remember police having bets between themselves who would win the fight they had instigated.
They basically had there own personal colosseum , you could over look it from the side of the Clockend .
Holloway police station probably still have the trophies won by that boxer who supported Arsenal in them times in the cabinet near the stairs leading to the canteen.

If I remember rightly, either on the day of the match or a few days before, a newspaper (I think it was The Sun) wrote an article, where an Arsenal Top Boy was
saying, "He was the Hardest fan in London". This enraged a lot of WHU fans and it caused a more than the usual, tense build up to the local Derby. We all knew
something was going to happen and by witnessing the proceedings on that day, you could tell it had also been planned in advance!
From standing in the safety of The Clock End, you could see The ICF & West Ham's main mob, making their way along the top of the North Bank, towards the middle.
Two large pockets of fans had already established themselves high-up & either side of stand. You could tell The Arsenal were apprehensive because they were aware
West Ham was in there somewhere. Just before the KO, one of the groups at the back on the left hand side let themselves be known (or they were recognised?). But
Arsenal's big mistake, was to relinquished the ground behind the goal to make their way towards the trouble!................
It was the cue to throw an orange smoke bomb into the crowd & the ensuing panic, allowed The ICF to surge forward in large numbers and attempt to 'Take the End'!
Many Arsenal fans ended up on the pitch & found it difficult to get back in. A mob that looked over a hundred strong, battled hard to establish the spot behind their goal.
In their 'End' the ICF also had reinforcements helping from the flanks. The Arsenal fans were all over the place and unorganised but did eventually surround the WH mob,
who were now mainly fighting the coppers! Many West Ham fans got onto the pitch and took the well deserved plaudits from their own fans when joining the Clock End.
A jubilant (& bruised) West Ham mob remained in The North Bank, (certainly in all the first half) & found themselves completely surrounded by the police, while the home
fans kept having a pop at them when ever they could. Even when the Arsenal eventually got the North Bank back, you could tell they were deflated after what went on before.
It was a mad memorial day and it was mayhem outside after the game but most West Ham fans was up for it when Arsenal came looking for revenge.
I was in my 20's & married but following football was my true love and it meant everything to me then. But never enough for someone to lose their life.

Look at the state of affairs today regarding knife crime.
West Ham United had the best most organized firm employing innovative tactics and a real toughness in London and that's a fact and desperately trying to re write won't change the facts.

The point about Liberties the day Arsenal
Had fun at Upton Park and all surrounding areas was not that West Ham weren't generally number one up and down the country it was that Arsenal on this day famously called Liberties was that we came that day to Upton Park and pulled it off coz times were a changing and you could not hold us back yes we tried in the west stand etc and didn't get that far but outside of the ground and Plaistow etc we got the result Never thought I would see it as always a tough one to go and get away on the tube from Upton Park But that day was different Destiny And I don't think we could ever achieve more than we did that day Picture it neutrals or thugs alike Old bill well and truely no where and lost And our best mob all together getting back off at Plaistow and through the back streets quickly
Shushhhh EiE never thought I would ever see the day and this was in the football heyday 🤣😀

And just to let you know, Cass Pennant was a Spurs fan in primary school and most of secondary, I don't think he ever went to watch Spurs play at WHL and away matches, but he used to watch them play on TV, it's only when Cass started hanging around West Ham fan's from erith/bexley, he became a Hammer, and used to get into punch up's with other football firm's from other club's, and that's when the ICF was founded.

The North Bank at the time was the largest end in English Football and held 20,000 it became famous in the late 60's early 70's with it's skinhead culture. From the late seventies and through the 1980's most of Arsenal's firms were always located in the clock end near the away fans.
