These are great electro-acoustic guitars with Gibson heritage! The EJ-200 has a dual pick-up system. You pointed out the magnetic pick-up at the base of the neck, but overlooked the piezo pick-up in the bridge. The E-sonic preamp has a blend control so that you can mix the sound between the piezo and magnetic pick-ups so achieving a wide range of tonal possibilities. You have a choice of outputs so you can have the flexibility of putting the piezo through a DI into the PA and the magnetic through a guitar amp! My daughter uses hers for acoustic folk, jazz and pop/rock gigs, and can get a pretty close approximation of a 335 bridge position sound. Drawbacks? She hates the watch ‘coin’ style batteries, which don’t seem as durable as the more usual 9v systems on other electro-acoustic preamps. Also, it’s a large bulky instrument to cart around on public transport in London for open mic gigs, although, the obvious benefit is that, in small venues, the acoustic projection means she can get away with playing unplugged which is also good for street busking without an amp.
I have to be honest...for all their merits, the EJ's have nothing on their "Inspired by Gibson" counterparts. I recently got one from Sweetwater. They ain't cheap; but you really do get what you pay for...truly the next best thing to the real Gibson.
Say thank you to your wife, brother, lol. That's a really great guitar, especially for the money. I've had mine for quite a lot of years and it was my main go to guitar. But because of this big C-19 virus I had to sell it to keep my wife at home and treat her myself. I could see you were getting a little emotional opening the box. It was nice to see someone who was so moved after finally getting the guitar he's been wanting for so long. Enjoy it my friend, you have a nice wife there.
3:40 I love when he said, "I made a guitar case out of a box, that's what poor people do" I really understand what that means and made me feel so much sympathy for him...
A huge disappointment when Epiphone added the pickup and put a cutaway in the guitar, They should have left well enough alone and not try to fix something that wasn't broken. Instead of jacking up the original design of the J-200 they should have came up something completely new.
You could argue that this is a tangential development and not meant to be a J200, but provide more flexibility into one instrument (check my comment in the timeline below) with twin piezo/magnetic p/up system and preamp, it is one instrument which is capable of a wide spectrum of tonal possibilities for recording and live work AND great acoustic tone and projection, akin to a J200! What’s not to like at this price point (we paid around £350 including Epiphone hard case in the UK some five years ago!). Also, the set-up was pretty much spot on at point of sale!
