    Barrel pumps are very handy, especially for the large 200 litre/50 USG type. We use them for storing water, gasoline and Diesel fuel mainly, which brings me to my point: if you keep more than one type of liquid on hand, it's not a bad idea to have a separate, dedicated pump for each type, and to label the pump at least 2 ways. We've adopted the colour convention that usd to be standard for jerry cans - red for gasoline, yellow for Diesel, blue for water. Each pump is painted in the colour, and the word "water" or "gas" or "Diesel" is put on with a paint marking pen. (Those can be bought from welding supply stores for less than $2 each, and they paint in them is very durable). Of course, you can adapt that to match whatever colour scheme you're using.
    Although the plastic pumps have become quite good, they do not fare so well in very cold temperatures. I'm old enough, and old-fashioned enough that I still use metal barrel pumps. These are readily available for gas, Diesel, oil, etc. but can also be found in a "water-safe" version. (I believe that type has an internal poly coating, but I haven't taken mine apart). I've found that some of the industrial supply houses sell this type of pump cheaper, and of a better quality, than some of the 'consumer" supply outlets.
    Doing this may seem like overdoing things, but it's a way to avoid the chance of cross-contamination - easy enough to do by accident if someone is tired, or if it's dark. Thanks for making this video.

      Since I posted this video, amazon started carrying a 10-ft self-starting siphon hose instead of just a 6-ft one. That works w/o having to add more length to it. You still need to attach it to a 4’ piece if pvc pipe, which is easy. Best wishes!!

    THANK YOU THANK YOU! I have tried to think of every idea and called everyone, litterally trying to find a syphon that will work for me. TADA you solved it! I live in an apartment and the tub here is terrible. Misshaped too shallow, too long etc. Its a new bldg. Anyway, Ive had an inflatable tub and they are nice! Yes. I have been trying to figure out out how to drain the tub in to other tub drain. You have done it. I obviously love my baths to soak

    Thank You!!!
    I'm draining eight 17 gallon water buckets & one 100 gallon water tank for my small livestock & while I could just dump them and/or remove the drain plug, it would cause a lot of open stall flooding & it's a lot of work for my aging arthritic body.
    Fly season is a challenge as they lay their eggs on the water surface which then float down/ attach to the bottom & resemble off-white rice in rows & other like patterns.
    I needed to get a pump that I could redirect the water out of the barn entirely, (we're on a slope), onto the grass so pumping/syphoning is definitely the way to go.
    I now know better that it's not only plausible to drain water like this, but a definitely good option.
    Thank you again for your most informative video!!!

    I used it to get water out of an aquarium. It is used to unclog your sink. Mine had German on it. But I saw a YT vid on it. Harbor Freight - Pittsburgh Automotive Multi-Use Transfer Pump Review.
    Same Idea. I used it to get the air out of my long tube and so get the water to my kitchen sink.
    It worked perfectly. You leave the tube hanging on the ground and it gets the momentum to reach the sink.
    The Romans already used this simple principle.

    Awesome video. I am looking for something to empty my inflatable bathtub back into the actual bathtub. I was told the shaker hose must move downward, it seems the shaker pulls up out of the barrel just find. The shaker I would use would only be about 2 ft. deep up/over into the bathtub. Thank you.

    IDo you know of anything that will attach to a standard garden hose? I collect rain water in a barrel, but during big rainstorms the barrel will overflow. I want to set it up so that when the water gets to a certain level, I can start siphoning it off and drain it through a long water hose to another area. I live in Hawaii, so I get lots of rain at times, so I need to drain it off at times, but save it at others.

    Actually for this and a lot of other applications one only needs a length of 3/8" clear tubing. For this barrel application I would use 10-12 feet of tubing. You just feed most all of the tubing into the barrel or fuel tank, whatever, pinch the end or cap the end with your thumb and pull the tubing back out. The pinch or your thumb capping the end has the same effect as sucking. When you are pulling the tubing out, you are pulling the liquid out to continue syphoning. May not work great with fuel tanks that have baffles in them as it isn't very likely but the tubing could possibly get hung up in the baffling.

    Since I made this video, amazon has started selling 10' self-starting ("shaker") hoses, which is way superior to the usual 6' ones. You only need 1/2" inner diameter.

    I have that hose but my question is why the lite color barrel, I believe that allows lite into the barrel which I'm sure promotes algae , the blue ones and stored in a dark area cuts back on algae build up true or false ?

    • @k.watkins1259
      @k.watkins1259 3 года назад

      Your right about this, but we got the white barrels on a group buy for $14 each. They were used pop syrup barrels and we had to really wash them out and even clorox the inside to kill the sugars, but no problem with algae after that.

    The pumps with a goose neck, OEM and others, have a hose thread. Remove the goose neck and you can attach a garden hose.

    This video is similar to various instructional videos I've seen made from the 40s/50s where there's only pure info, no fluff, and really gets the job done. Thanks. I'm curious if this would work for syphoning water from a tub to a toilet tank (which is elevated higher than the tub) when water is shut off in our apartment. Might need to do an experiment next time.
    In a gender blind world, it wouldn't matter that you're an older woman doing such a useful video, but, from what I've learned, women have a lot of useful things to communicate, and a lot of them get ignored by stubborn men who don't know how to listen. In other words, I'm glad I didn't have to watch another 20 to 40 something guy not actually show liquid coming out of the hose and at what rate.

    • @kmiklaszewski
      @kmiklaszewski 2 года назад

      Yes, you should be able to siphon from the tub to the toilet no problem. I use a couple of different types of safe ends when I am disinfecting and fully soaking my cat litter box and have to dump out or get rid of many gallons of water in a plastic tub on the floor into the toilet.
