  • After giving the shack the full RFI treatment, results are simply amazing on each band, watch me tune around, the signals are so dynamic, crisp and loud and the noise floor low. I have a Hexbeam at 11.5m for 20m and Resonant 80m and 40m dipoles, sloping from 18m to 11m. Both HF and LF antennas have FB31-1020 Ferrite beads at the feed point.
I am running with the AGC off, as this also maximises the Signal to Noise on weaker signals. The audio is from the modest extension loudspeaker to the left of the radio.
This is the RFI treatment, you can see full details on www.qrz.com/db/gw4bvj
    1. RG400 coax with 12 turns around an FT240-31 Ferrite Toroid on the radios Main Antenna Output to my MFJ 4-way Antenna Switcher.
    2. Built and installed Ian GM3SEK's Whole Shack Mains Filter.
    3. Many FT240-31's with 12 turns on, on every lead in and out of the radio.
    4. 40cm x 40cm x 1.5mm Copper Sheet under the Radio strapped to real earth and another sheet linked under my Laptop and Winkeyer.
The combined effects are amazing. 73 Rich GW4BVJ

I have one and it’s one of my best radios. I’m not selling this one!

This "little" radio by it's size is a very great performer. I have always been amazed by those radios from Kenwood, TS-450S, TS-870S, TS-570DG, TS-590SG, ... There is NO need to spend $15.000 on a radio, it's better to invest into good antennas ! Thanks and 73.

Ah but when you can't invest in a good antenna, because of restrictions, a nice Icom 7851 will do more to pull out a weak signal and allow you to have contacts with just a piece of wire, than another less radio will not allow you to do. I know, I've done it. Agree with your comments on these Kenwood radios thought, they are superb.

I have a 590s and an ic7300 the kenwood is far superior in every regard except the display. I would have liked to see your noise floor with the AF all the way up. Thanks for the video.

That is impressive! Could you be persuaded to do a before and after video or is it too much work to recreate the old situation?

why do you run it with the AGC off?

I was first made aware of the benefits of turning AGC off and winding back the RF control to copy weak signals by Jarrad VK3BL in this video ruclips.net/video/U21X_3LaIMk/видео.html

@@av4u ah, I think I did that on my ft-818. The 7300 is a bit tricky. Thanks for the answer.

@@av4u yes the rf control on the 590 and 7300 are completely different animals. I miss my 590SG.

How much did the Whole Shack Mains Filter cost to build if you don't mind me asking. Currently using a Tacima 6 Way Mains Conditioner but thinking about building one myself.

I have actually costed it at around £90.00, all the parts are listed on GM3SEK's website.
