Minecraft is the most popular game in the world, with by far the most sales. It's a fantasy game that's family friendly and PG, rated E for everyone. Sometimes they have to go to lengths to keep that rating. Minecraft is not just a game for kids, it's a business too. Some of the updates they make, some of the things they add or don't add in different versions, are for mysterious reasons.

I remember the time that news said "Minecraft causes violent" i was laughing so hard but after 3 days they announced minecraft would be banned from turkey they showed us redstone as violent and they called it "blood" well reporters were parents that doesnt even know any shit about games and their kids was stupid cuz they were doing everything that on game like hurting animals trying to punch walls so im not surprised after 1 week they done of reporting the game idk how but in 2019 or 2018 peoples started to talk about it again

dolphins are intelligent so they don't mind giving a ride even when your gonna drown they will pick you up to safety and shark they don't mind you even the aggressive they leave you alone they are sweet they also ask for food sometimes (I have now understood how. Despite the obvious geographic barrier, increased deaths of endangered species after a video game potentially added them to the game as hostile is just causal fallacy. While the Jaws Effect may be semi-true, Minecraft does not have the same effect of cultural influence over people. Minecraft never created mass hysteria surrounding spiders or something; they've always been there.
@Hernando Malinche Surprise! Jaws is based on a book that already scared people, and most likely real events as well. Just as WE aren't dumb and unaware of movie origins, neither were people in the 70s. The movie painted sharks as violent and murderous animals out for blood and when people come to find the movie is based on events similar it becomes even more terrifying, thus accidental fear-mongering.
People can be dumb, but they AREN'T helpless idiots, don't treat them as such. Our actions DO have consequences, even when writing fiction, but there is a fine line where it will or won't have them on a mass scale. There is no in-between. Just because Jaws caused shark populations to drop doesn't mean Minecraft is/will be affecting people's actions too.
Minecraft is a very obviously fictitious game about building, mining and going to other dimensions to kill a dragon. Jaws is a fictional horror-thriller movie that stuck much more closely to reality than Minecraft does, and was inspired by real events where people DID die. Minecraft and Jaws are apples to oranges.

I think one of the major reasons behind sharks and why they aren't being added yet there are other endangered mobs in the game is because Mojang is scared of it becoming controversial. The thing about sharks is that they have often been demonized by movies and other videogames as horrific beasts. As such there's controversy on how sharks are portrayed, Mojang is fearful of the game becoming entangled in that controversy. If that's the case, Mojang should have said that from the start instead of using those flaw explanations.

Every word of this is so extremely true. Mojang's stated reasons for not adding sharks to the game are patently ridiculous, and they know it as well as we do. I've suggested adding sharks as neutral mobs on r/minecraftsuggestions and my post was almost immediately removed (even though many players commented that they agreed with it and the post was even given a silver award before it was removed). It's just WEIRD. If the reason is that they don't want to lose their "Fantasy Violence" rating, why don't they just tell us that? It would be a hell of a lot less frustrating and insulting to our intelligence than the way they're actually handling it. Also, even if they can't add sharks for some reason, why can't they add some fantasy hostile sea creature that actually looks like something you'd find in the sea (instead of just being another zombie pickled in sea water). Call it whatever you want to. Call it "fantasy hostile fish" for all I care. Hell, call it the "Sort-of-like-a-shark-but-definitely-not-a-shark fish" if you want to be really on the nose about it! They could make it similar to a shark while still making it obvious that that's not what it was. Or they could just make it look like a hydra or something else from mythology that is not and has never been in Earth's real oceans. The important thing would be having a hostile (or neutral) sea creature mob that occupied the same niche as a shark (i.e. apex ambush predator). It would make underwater game play SOOO much more interesting.

“Kids might kill sharks” is absolutely hilarious to me. It makes me picture like, little 6 year old Timmy at the beach with his parents. All of a sudden he spots a dorsal fin cutting through the waves... and he gets that familiar, furious glint in his eye. He immediately wades out into the neck-high surf and starts beating the shit out of Jaws with his tiny little fists.
His parents can do nothing but sigh helplessly as their small child decimates the ocean’s ecosystems. “Never should have bought him Minecraft,” they’d think.

Just a bunch of excuses. Could easily have just said "Becasue we don't want to." Instead of having to justify it.
Well to be honest, they should have just said NOTHING at all if China and sales are the reason. But they felt the need to say something and fucked it up. saying "Because we don't want to" is a bad decision for a company since it will feel almost insulting to people who buy the game and they want to make as much money as possible.

The minecraft team themselves didn't say "kids" they said "people," as minecraft does have a large young adult/adult audience. Not to mention that kids grow up eventually.
And some people (not even referencing those hunting for sharks for their fins here) do kill sharks through netting them or running into them with boats or shooting them or whatever else, either for fun or because they think they're all dangerous animals. The creators of minecraft simply didn't want to spread any misleading mindset on either side of the spectrum, portraying them falsely either which way.
It is good reasoning with good intentions and I think Dream's checklist of their reasons poorly summarized their actual reasons.

I think they mean more of a “we dont want to perpetuate the stereotype that sharks are bad because we’re concerned about their endangerment” which i understand, but it still doesnt explain why they dont add them as neutral mobs.

minecraft has gained influence with its growth and so politics have become very important, especially since younger audiences play it.
from a gameplay perspective, they would need to serve an important purpose, and if they were to do that, chances are, it would have to drop something, which resembles shark hunting. if not, theyd get something similar to polar bears, where they just kinda stand around.
unfortunately from here, it would be very easy for news sources to spin this into something like, 'minecraft allows children to kill sharks,' which wouldnt at all be a good look for them as of now, considering its such a sensitive topic. so i do believe that what mojang and dream said are both correct. politics are important for mojang.
oh yeah, in the mob vote at minecon earth, option a was a mob that pulled you down underwater. 'the monster of the ocean depths.' so if they were to add another ocean mob (apart from drowneds), i think it should be something a little more interesting like this, and a little less controversial. to be clear, i do think there should be at least another mob added to the ocean, perhaps more scenic and passive mobs as well.
I’d like to add that there is a BIG difference between bees and sharks, that being that you don’t just see sharks in your daily life, meanwhile bees are pretty much everywhere.

To be honest, they mainly don't want sharks 2 b added cuz they don't want kids approaching them in real life or killing them when the kids grow up. They added other endangered animals like Sea turtles and Dolphins cuz they are mainly passive. But the other reasons they gave, like u said are completely ridiculous
