Marriage proposal at University of Detroit Mercy's 2014 Law Commencement

University of Detroit Mercy School of Law student Nicholas Siewert made school history on May 9, 2014 when the Grosse Pointe Woods man became the first Law graduate to include a marriage proposal on stage during the commencement ceremony.
Siewert's girlfriend (and 2013 Law alumna) Abril Valdes was assisting in Siewert's hooding, a traditional part of the graduation ceremony that signifies a student's completion of the academic program, when Siewert dropped to one knee and asked for her hand in marriage. Valdes, who is from Harper Woods, said yes.
The School of Law commencement ceremony took place at Calihan Hall on Detroit Mercy's McNichols campus. Siewert received his Juris Doctor of Law.
