The Acropolis of Terracina was the place from which, as Homer recounts, Ulysses went up to look around, observing the outline of the Eea island (current Circeo promontory). Other hypotheses would identify Terracina in the city of Lamo, a thriving center inhabited by the Lestrigoni, in whose port Ulysses would have landed.
On April 7, 1848, a series of frescoes with landscapes of the Odyssey were found in Rome, placed in the upper part of the wall of the main room. The subjects are the travels of Ulysses with a landscape background. The frescoes present some aspects that strongly recall a 2000 year old Terracina.
According to an erudite legend, reported by Dionysius of Halicarnassus, however, the first colonizers of the Terracinese territory were some refugees from Sparta who would have settled in Feronia, at the foot of Mount Leano, where then a place of worship dedicated to this divinity was built.

It seems that the city entered the Roman orbit as early as the end of the 6th century BC. Terracina is later mentioned in the first treaty between Rome and Carthage, traditionally dated to the first year of the Roman Republic (509 BC).
In the last years of the same century it would have been........

La mia Terracina ❤️ my beautiful home town
Stupenda Silvia... ci vado sempre volentieri ..
Silvia, how did you get to the USA from here?
@@rosalierossi5897 I still live here 🙂 in San Felice Circeo another beautiful town nearby
My Grandmother, Virginia Giannetti, was born in Terracina. I hope to go there someday and walk the streets myself. But in the meantime, I certainly appreciated this tour. It was wonderful to see where my ancestors walked and I read about the history. Thank you so much!
Nice to know you liked it Cindy; it's definititely a beautiful city, and surely worth a visit, even if it's often overlooked a bit about the nearby towns. But I truly adored it, and during summer... I hope you could visit it soon then! A big ciao from Rome and wish you a nice weekend
This is beautiful it looks like a big town.
@@rosalierossi5897 Indeed, very beautiful Terracina
Wonderfully beautiful Riccardo thank you so much for your walk in Terracina.... History in every step you took fascinating. I was captured from the beginning with your beautifully piloted drone filming accompanied with very moving music that set the scene.... Terracina is time capsule of a city and seems to be untouched by tourism. Kind regards from the UK.
Cynthia, nice to see you again! Thank you so much as always, very happy you enjoyed it. Unfortunately or luckily it's truly overlooked in the area, compared to Sperlonga or other more famous nearby towns, but its history is so incredibly rich.... A gem in disguise, but still there to be discovered. Its Roman past is incredibly vivid and so visible all around... For history lovers it's a paradise. I was sorry the museum was closed as I was very interested to visit it too!
@@StillWanderer It would be my dream city to live in Riccardo... as you say a history lover's paradise. I'm pleased to see some these beautiful places untouched by tourism .... I suppose it's very debatable but too many beautiful towns cities and villages are ruined by being over commercialised and loose their character.... but it also brings in money to conserve beautiful monuments of our past. Take care be safe. Night night.
Agrees wholeheartedly Cynthia! I prefer mostly "forgotten" towns too! The original idea of the channel was and still is to find those. So many to discover.... I'll try to upload at least 1 unknown town s week now
1:12.....that's Southern Italy. Just magical.
All the palms, citrus and flowers thriving in small pots against an ancient stone wall.
Always makes me smile.
True Ken, there's something magical indeed... I'm planning to go further south again soon, maybe Puglia again or Calabria... will see if I can make it. Loved Terracina anyway, I went there before, but didn't remember the historical centre like this.
Non è sud è centro Italia, il Lazio è centro Italia
The music you chose for the drone footage is mesmerizing and drew me right in to the video. Well done!
Dear Sharon, Thank you so much , as always!
🤞
Oh..forgot to mention in my earlier comment....As always I loved the intro of this video..you really select mesmerizing music for the drone footage intros of each and every video of yours's which is ear soothing..just loved it.
Thank you dear Sudip... Sometimes I wonder if they are liked... if the "mood" is correct, and such.. glad I am not the only one who likes these "slower" drone shots, and not the fast and crazy ones... Glad they are enjoyed them for sure
Such a beautiful walking tour! And a captivating intro. Thank you for posting!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you Ric. Would never have known about this place if it weren't for your videos. Yet another amazing place to visit. And to think that Roman amphitheatre was only discovered due to a WWII bombing! Imagine what lies underneath the rest of Italy...
Hi Jo, indeed, it's a shame as Terracina is so rich in history yet so overlooked in the area... maybe it's a curse, maybe a blessing, it depends from one's point of view for sure... Indeed, I was quite shocked too to read about the discovery so late in time... There's much to discover around here for sure, I'll show more unusual towns, for now in Lazio, but slowly slowly I'll move around farther and farther hopefully!
I live in Terracina!
Thank you for this video which show all the details of my beautifull city! We appreciate that. I invite all the people that had appreciate this video to visit Terracina! We waiting for you! ♥♥♥

Danke Freund
Thnx Riccardo,well done again.
Thank you too so much Dear Mitrovski and nice to see you again. Terracina isn't well known.. but it surely deserves to be visited. Beautiful city indeed... sunny summer day also, perfect day it was
Thanks again for a beautiful video. One can just enjoy the opening drone footage and music and be satisfied with this city of about 83,000 people. For Italy this is a very large city. I'm a history buff and this city has so much history. I only wish you filmed it when they were people on the streets. It must have been Sunday morning, I like when people are around.
Glad you enjoyed it Dear Esther and nice to see you again here. Indeed, Terracina is not so well known as other cities nearby, but it's so interesting from a history point of view... the history of the roman heritage there (the aemilian forum... the via appia..) is quite incredible. Yes, it was on a Sunday morning, unfortunately there weren't so many people that day /
Amazing sceneries! Awesome views! 👍
I know I gone on and on about how great your intro is, but it's true so beautiful. The perfect shot of the city, the sea, the mountain in blue, and the lone bird flying.... perfect capture. This one is really another fantastic vlog. Thank you very much for sharing Riccardo.
Dear Lawsonartzy, so glad to see you again, and I would like to truly thank you for your kind words which you write so often... I'm glad some of the videos can be appreciated; there may be some towns which I liked perhaps more or less, or where I walked for a short walk or a for a long stroll, but it's true that each one has a charismatic vibe which is unique to its nature. Many don't visit Terracina for istance, while I think it's a stunning place, and truly loved it.
Wish you a nice week ahead and "Grazie 1000"

@@StillWanderer Grazie Infinito!!!! I know there a lot of small towns that are unfairly overlooked. You have done a superb job now I'm off to watch your bike ride in Rome. Anti nausea pills check, anxiety pill check, and the sound down low because its Rome.
@@telawsonartzy6880 thank you dear Lawsonartzy...ah! Indeed by bike in Rome is truly an.adventure every time for sure. But up there in Janiculum was so nice , without cars mostly... beautiful area... Beautiful calm town , Historical remains are wonderful to watch , too old but still preserved to some extent . To be present at a structure which goes back to thousands of years ago is really very sensational .Amazing places .👌👌
Glad you enjoyed it Dear Rajyashree, I agree , the roman vestiges in Terracina are truly spectacular and unfortunately not well known... Happy you also liked this city. A big Big Ciao dear friend
I just watched the drone footage and that was the best footage I have ever seen and the pause you did looking out at the ocean was beautiful!

I never stop to be amazed that you italians are so fortunate to be able to walk amidst all these ancient ruins, even living there! A Roman Amphitheatre in your midst, an ancient wall, an ancient pillar forming a cathedral wall. These places just blow the mind. Thank you again for sharing your country with us, Riccardo. 🤗🚶
Indeed Geraldine, it was almost astonishing to discover Terracina... the roman ruins, also the Forum, are SO close to what they were in the past , it's astonishing... exactly at the place of the cathedral there was that roman temple of apollo... and the amphitheatre... like a Pompeii, but a living one.. and so unknown to tourists also... a shame. Glad you enjoyed it anyway and nice to see you here again!
I'm from Terracina (but live in Sweden) and I can say that I never really appreciated the city before leaving Italy. I started to understand what a historical place it is only a few years later. We italians are spoiled with culture and history and sometimes do not even value them as they deserve. I made 2 vlogs about Terracina a few weeks ago talking about this, from the perspective of somebody who's lived his first 20 years there, went to primary school in what used to be the pope's residence and walked almost daily on a 2000 years old road. Thank you for the video!
@@anitalianinsweden8868 Ciao! Nice to read that, I'm not living too far away from Terracina myself.. Interesting channel about the comparison between the two countries. Still haven't visited Sweden, but hopefully ...

It's always great to read such messages Nancy - from time to time, some relatives come in some videos and it's so cool to read about the ancestors coming from there. A gem in disguise! Thank you Riccardo!
Completely Agree Alice, a real gem in disguise... the roman forum and the amphitheatre... but as well as the new cathedral in exactly the same spot as the old temple of Apollum (still uncertain) are incredible... one goes to Pompeii and Ostia, but... so close there are living examples of well preserved ruins. It was amazing to see Roman ruins on your walking tour of Terracina. I enjoyed this tour very much because of the history. Quite remarkable that a pillar from an ancient Roman temple was built into a Cathedral, coming arcoss the Aemilian Forum, the Amphitheatre, Roman arches, other ruins and artefacts. Incredible indeed!
Thank you Dear Lang, so glad you enjoyed it. Liked Terracina a lot too, went there some years ago but people often don't visit it properly... The Roman ruins are stunning, amongst the best preserved I've seen around Rome. A gem in disguise... Wish you a nice weekend my friend

Buongiorno!
You might know this but maybe not. Is there a roman house that can be toured either restored or built. I've seen some videos of Pompeii but I would like to see one fully intact.
Hi Jessica, hmmm.... interesting question... I think that the best "untouched" roman house that could be somehow toured (even though, of course, they are still ruins after all) would be to visit Pompei, but I tihnk in Erculanum there are even better examples... but to be honest also in Ostia Antica (in the "houses of Diana there are some stunning examples of well mantained houses there...), but these are mostly residential city buildings or "villa urbana". The "rustica" houses, typical roman villas that were located outside of the cities, were in-fact small farms per-se. There are some stunning examples are the "Roman House in Spoleto - the house of Vespaia Polla" and the stunning "Villa of Poppea" near Pompeii... also check the Villae in Castellammare di Stabia (ancient Stabiae!) - Villa San MArco is almost intact!... now tha you tell me this... I should actually go in some of these villas and make a tour!
