Considered as one of the most realistic portrays about world war two “Cross Of Iron” surely is doing that mention justice. It is a rather surprising product of Hollywood, coming without any glorifications or the classic portrayal of good against evil. It stands there as a testament of men fighting an awful war. Although “Cross Of Iron” was the only war movie of Sam Peckinpah, he obviously knew how to elevate Willi Heinrich’s novel (The Willing Flesh) to the big screen. Great images, frightening scenes, atmosphere and a lot of dirt, making you aware, that this is not only entertainment. With a splendid cast of international stars, such as James Coburn, Maximillian Schell, James Mason and Senta Berger the movie earned much success, critically as equally from audiences. The musical score by Ernest Gold feels surprisingly soft and innocent, probably, because music was mainly used for quieter and emotional scenes. The soundtrack is otherwise famously known for its melancholy main theme (featured here principally in “The Massacre” and “End Credits”) and for the use of the German folk- and children’s song “Hänschen Klein”, which gets a pathetic subtext, if you think of war, while having the song’s lyrics in mind (translations can be found online). Enjoy!
I remember when my dad bought our first VCR. This was one of the first videos we rented. It scared the crap out of me. I don't think my dad quite knew what a film by Sam Peckinpah meant. Fantastic soundtrack and a wonderful suite. Thanks for the (frightful) memories, Fred.
Certainement LE MEILLEUR film de guerre du coté allemand , acteur au top , musique qui apporte cette touche final lors des scènes de combat , je recommande !!!!

Fully agree. I would only add that the music plays an understandably significant role in the opening credits too
It's Peckinpah - not much glamour in the way he depicts any dirty business, in this case, war.
I know this sounds silly, but I had a little bit of a jump scare at 3:37 when the organ came in, but that just probably makes even better!
As a request, could you upload a suite for the Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins version of "The Bounty"
Como explicar tanto. Virtuosismo despues de EXODO
And what a great underrated actor James Coburn is
Outstanding movie, danke kammarden !!!!
A fantastic film and the score totally complimented it. Great, too, as a stand alone listen. Love it.
Thanks for posting this. Compared with The Longest Day, A Bridge Too Far etc this isn't very well known and I consider underrated.

The good old seventies for soundtracks, great stuff.

A great movie ,but never got the recognition it deserves.
Sounds good Fred I have never seen this film. I will search for it. Thanks & all the best.
Tremenda película y gran banda sonora, saludos
The Finale chapter... that music combined with this INCREDIBLE poem of Bertolt Brecht, makes my crying like a baby.
Maybe best war film ever. Makes saving private Ryan look like a weaker episode of The A Team
Another great war movie where the enemy is finally not in front, but the one in your back..
This movie got the later days of the Kuban Peninsula campaign well.
at 3:37 涙なしでは聞けない😢。There are German soldiers with them!だったような。滂沱の涙!!
Only Peckinpah could have made this film.
Ricordo il regista Sam Peckinpah, ma non mi sono ancora dedicato alla visione dei suoi film!🤔
Buon 1° Maggio al popolo di RUclips!🖐🏼
