ধান চাষে যাদের আগ্রহ কমে যাচ্ছে তাদের জন্য সুখবর নিয়ে এল বাংলাদেশ ধান গবেষণা ইনস্টিটিউট- ব্রি। প্রতিষ্ঠানটির একদল গবেষক দীর্ঘ পরীক্ষা-নীরিক্ষার পর নতুন নতুন ধানের জাত উদ্ভাবনে চমক দেখিয়ে যাচ্ছেন। চমকের সেরা চমক হিসেবে- এমন তিনটি জাত পাওয়া গেছে- যা তীব্র তাপদাহের সাথে চ্যালেঞ্জ করে উচ্চফলন দিতে সক্ষম। তাছাড়া এ জাতগুলোর প্রতিটিতেই রয়েছে স্বতন্ত্র বিশেষ দিক। এ জাতগুলো আবাদের মধ্য দিয়ে চাষীদের লাভের পাশাপাশি খাদ্য উৎপাদনে এক অনন্য মাইলফলক স্পর্শ করবে দেশ।
বিগত ৫২ বছরের মধ্যে রাজশাহীতে গেল বছরের ৩০ এপ্রিল সর্বোচ্চ ৪৩ ডিগ্রি তামপাত্রা রেকর্ড করা হয়। যার প্রভাব রাজশাহী থেকে দক্ষিণ-পশ্চিমাঞ্চলের যশোর পর্যন্ত বিস্তৃতি ছিল। একইসাথে দেশের প্রায় সব জেলার তাপমাত্রা ছিল ৪০ ডিগ্রি সেলসিয়াসের উপরে। অথচ ধানের প্রজনন পর্যায়ে সহনীয় তাপমাত্রা ৩৫ ডিগ্রি সেলয়িয়াস। গেল দুই বছর বোরো ধানের শীষ বের হওয়ার সময় উচ্চ তাপমাত্রার ধান উৎপাদন মারাত্মকভাবে ব্যহত হয়। এ অবস্থায় কোন জাতের ধান আবাদ করবেন তা নিয়ে সঠিক পরামর্শ পাচ্ছে না। তাদের জন্য সুখবর হল- এই তীব্র তাপমাত্রা চ্যালেঞ্জ করে- ব্রি ধান ১০২, ব্রি ধান ১০৫ এবং ব্রি ধান ১০৮ উচ্চফলন দিতে সক্ষম ।
