I managed to play this game about a few months ago.
I think the biggest complaint I have towards the game is that right before the credits rolled, I was ready to sink another 8-10 hours into the game at least, and it just ended.
The lore was super interesting, the story had me pretty hooked, the set pieces and graphics were great to look at. Yet, all of that ended up feeling sorta wasted when I realized after my extremely short journey, it was over.
I think out of any game I've played, this one might take the cake for most wasted potential.

Before launch I remember watching the trailers and being truly blown away by the graphics and the setting looked great to me, but at the time I did not have a PS, I was so disappointed and I forgot about the game. Then I got PS4 Pro when it came out and during one of the PSN sales I saw this game for 6 bucks and bought it straightaway. I was not expecting much to be honest because of the game's reputation, I got it only because of the memories of the trailers and its cheap price. But I was pleasantly surprised, I love narrative games and this did not disappoint at all. I get why people that bought it for $60 at launch would be angry but having bought if for $6 I felt it was great. And oh yeah, I would absolutely play the sequel if they ever did one, I hope they do it, plus this time I'm sure the gameplay part will be much better.

The characters, symbolism and blending of different themes came together to make something that I thought was really special. Despite how short this game was, despite it's lackluster gameplay, I will always hold this as one of my top games as I truly felt like I could get immersed in the world they created. 3:24 The bare minimum to recognizing motion is around 12 fps and not 24 fps, which is why many animations are on 2s (a new drawing every 2 frames) rather than 1s (a new drawing every frame).

I get it disappointed people about it's length but it's my favorite world building of any game and I still want a sequel. I was so invested in the story (I am a player who is always into the narrative of video games).
However, my memory of the majority of complaints was more on the quicktime events which were many. It was billed as a shooter but it was really more of a cinematic game like The Quarry and I think that hurt it as much or more as the length did.

Reducing resolution (or other tricks) to improve performance is the entire story of real-time computer graphics in EVERY game ever. That this is a complaint is simply ignorant, as most commentary about the technicalities surrounding game design is.
But there are many other optimisations for performance in this title. Notably, it is forward rendered with a z-prepass for lighting, reducing the bandwidth that typically accompanies deferred rendering pipelines, and getting MSAA cheaply rather than a separate compositing pass. The Order's INCREDIBLE QUALITY isn't simply because of the "black bars" or the "film grain". This game was punching above its weight, because it RENDERED differently than other games.
And it would look good on the PS5 if it were released today at higher resolutions. That's saying something.

The Order 1886 doesn’t run at 24 fps. Digital Foundry has a video up that shows it’s 30 fps. The discussion about this “cinematic” frame rate was that 30 is closer 24 fps thus “more cinematic” than 60. It was an excuse by developers as an artistic choice back then due to the PS4 not being able to hit 60 fps in certain games. I believe they used this excuse as to not disparage the PS4 hardware.

The Order: 1886 is one of the most underrated game of its time. I played the game approximately 6 years after its release, knowing full well that it was generally viewed as a failure. To my surprise I actually had an amazing time with it. Even at the end of the PS4 generation the game looked fantastic. Even today, seeing this video, it looks better than some recent PS5 games. The story was also excellent. I was expecting the cliffhanger everyone was talking about the whole time. But then again, I was quite surprised that the game's story actually had a proper conclusion. Sure, it was open to a sequel, but there was nothing that would spoil the story experience for me. And don't even get me started about absolutely stunning environments. The game certainly isn't flawless, it's mostly lacking some of the quality of life improvements we are used to in games these days, I wished the environments were more open, but even so, the game is still great. Even today. If you haven't played it yet, I'd recommend you to do so.

Some of the best-looking games on the PS4 came out early in the console's lifespan. Uncharted 4 released in 2016, and Assassin's Creed: Black Flag and Battlefield 4 were launch titles. They all hold up really well, in my opinion.

Please try returnal. It's a rogue like sci-fi psychological thriller where you play as Selene. An astronaut who got shot and landed on a uncharted Planet. She discovers her own body and Audio logs and realises she is stuck in a loop. Every time she dies, she will reawake at the crashsite and have to start again. When she restarts, the layout of the planet will shift so you always have to find a new path for reaching your goal. the story is fascinating and you have little answers to what you are doing. Everything is crypted and there is room for your own theory what the story is all about. The vibe is very alien (franchise) in combination with some lovecrafteon jnfluences. You will like this

Worst way to play The Order 1886 is trying to rush though the game as fast as possible and skipping routes, as well as picking up the phone when the cutscenes arrive, treat it as a 3 part movie.
Best way to play the game is 3 hours at a time, walk through the game and look at everything, every pillar every window listen to the other conversations as it forshadows and adds to the story, read the news papers when you see them, check out the photos, listen to the audio logs, they all serve a purpose, sometimes for the story sometimes for the easter eggs, as well as the setting youre in. After you're done completing the game playing the second time would be a great opportunity to check out the photo mode, if you like a setting/filter, enable it during the gameplay, i beat the game in black and white, looked really cool, also that old western movie filter looked pretty cool playing. Get some amazing screen shots and keep them in your collection. Photo mode is amazing in games and PS games usually have the best of the best in photo mode, this is one of them. Have fun with the game and be patient. Not a good 60 dollar game, heck, i wouldn't even justify 50 on release, but for the price its at now (5-10 dollars) its a steal, it aged like fine wine, and for a game that doesnt focus on gameplay, the enviorment, the way the enemies take hits, the way the guns feel, recoil all that, is top notch. Mechanics are snappy and responsive, like Driveclub, everything got better over time.

IF the level design actually let's you move around and have different approaches in combat, the mobility and smoothness of running-shooting-CQB stuff of the player character combined with the enemies not being spongey and have satisfying reaction to being eviscerated by weapons, they could have something special here, gameplay-wise.
Granted I've played on the hardest difficulty (it was still not hard at all), so staying out of cover is pretty deadly, but the problem lies with the level design, with very few levels like the docks and the mansion near the end of the game letting you have a forward momentum to break the monotony of a shooting gallery. Not that you can't move around the levels, but in the first big gun fight in the game, if you even dare move to the other side of the "arena", you'll be swarmed by freshly spawned enemies on all sides.
The mansion fight was great and I've recorded a bit of it. It has a certain number of enemies to deal with, the covers felt natural parts of the setting and you can rush them other than sitting on a corner dealing headshots.
The worst sin of the game is on dealing with Lycans. Basically they're just stalkers in Dead Space where you just wait in a corner as they try to hit and run you. It was so bad. They could have just aped RE4/Dead Space with a dedicated dodge button when dealing with melee enemies/monsters, because they already got the fundamentals of a great TPS: great feeling weapons, recoil mechanics, great feedback/gore, smooth animation for hip firing/melee takedowns. Felt like English Wick in the right moment

I’m playing through this game right now, and I am riveted. The world, the guns, the FASHION. You say the gameplay is boring but honestly it has a nice variety of things for you to do, and there are some small change-ups that make it feel distinct from another cover-shooter like GOW.
For instance, when you take cover, you really can’t see what’s on the other side unless you either aim your weapon or actively look. Each enemy type is visually distinct and tells you how they’ll behave and what weapon class they use. And when you have a power weapon, enemies will caution each other thusly.
Gameplay could use some touch-ups, but it’s hardly bad.

I still play it from time to time, the lore the story, the graphics and sound design of this game was something else there is still nothing like it nowadays.
I don't have a problem it being short at all, as the game have no down time, no padding and bloat of today's AAA games like long length is a requirement.
Each gameplay loop was fun and addictive enough that it sticks and never overstays it welcome.
Even the forced walking sections didn't feel "forced" but well intentioned and not something to hide technical limitations or a tedious way to tell and move the story, even TLOU/Part 2 did fell prey to this but not this game.

I liked the game a lot when it came out. I loved the setting and I was badly hoping for an Assassin'sCred-esque story. Where the first game wasnsuper blank and repetitive but with a great idea and than came to live with the 2nd game.
I really think that The Order 1887 could have been a masterpiece. An Open World or HUB world in that setting with the vampires and werewolves, the Knights of the round table. This could've been so amazing.
The black bars were odd, but with a big enough TV, a wide-screen monitor or even beamer the first game could be fire.
The Gameplay gets a lot of flag but Uncharted doesn't have the best shooting, last of us is pretty bad IMO but the story is so good, the characters so well written that it doesn't matter too much, and The Order 1886 had a similar potential.

The pace is too slow and the game literally takes the player by the hand all the way. plus the excessive use of QTE throughout the game practically robbed any chance of being fun.

Would love a more open experience, not open world, but areas large enough to explore and complete side quests, over the course of a linear campaign that takes you across different areas of London. Similar to Final Fantasy 7 Remake. I could totally see an Order 1886 game that leans more into God of War 2018 design principles even.
