This game really rewards having the high ground, so even if there is only a small hillock near your deployment zone its worth lining your troops up on them. I've noticed a few battles now and especially the siege where you chose to fight on the low ground and it honestly does cripple your potential. For example if you deployed your parrot guns and some line infantry on either of the hills next to where you chose to deploy during the siege you would've inflicted far more damage much more quickly.
This becomes more important the further you get into the campaign (especially once you get kneel fire), definitely something worth trying to pay attention to in future battles :)

It is refreshing to see this campaign playthrough. Thanks for your take on this game. I myself have played most of the time with traditional playthroughs only, limiting the use of gunners/canons to a small degree.
But makes it even more interesting to watch your campaign to see a modern focused campaign.

A Parrot Gun unit. A nice taste test for when you eventually get the legendary Armstrong Guns.

That naval battle was brilliant! When it started I was like “just try to do as much damage as you can and hope for a valiant defeat” but you played it quite nicely! I’m the furthest thing from a naval strategist tho my skills are mostly confined to land lol

Still there were a few times where the angles were wrong and the ships couldn't fire. The smaller ship needs to get in behind their ship since it can fire forwards

Man I really wish I knew what I was doing with gunpowder based Total Wars. I can’t get out of the tradition melee mindset, I’m so bad at the battles 😢
Really enjoying this series so far LH. Looking forward to more

    Hey Lionheart,
    1. Just try to get through research Modern Army and get that Army War College building done before you turn Republic and that Bug is unavoidable and its also present in MrSmartDonkey's Fall of the Samurai turn Republic series, This bug only happen when you turn Republic not when you stay loyal to the Emperor or Shogun and This bug was never fix what so ever.
    2. When you have the time would you please build the British Trading District at the Capital so the Royal Marines will have accuracy & armour and build the Armourer this time so both accuracy & armour is Gold and "Perfectly balanced, as all things should be".
    3. You should make Saigō Takamori the new heir sense he will lead the next stack and if something happens to the faction leader and the current heir's level is lower then Takamori, then he will gain Delusions of Grandeur, then start a Rebellion. Just remove Takamori current office by right clicking the picture of a foot then finally declare heir by left clicking the picture of a raising sun.
4.And One more thing, You also got the Resources of Cotton from the foreign powers so you can upgrade your Cottage Industry to Cotton Processing Plant for more funds!

    My dear wife,
Our great leader has lured out the enemy of their City, their leader had brought his family with him. By using a unit out in the open, he knew they would attack the unit. The battle was hard fought, we exchanged rounds with their infantry and I took a shot to the shoulder. But we were able to wipe out most of their soldiers. they came at us with almost 2,040 men to our 3,215. My unit was able to kill most of the enemy army at 253 men killed. though we lost 111 men. there is talk about dispersing the men among the other units. I do not know the plan. Though I hope our daimyo does not do that. we have fought hard with each other and dare not to be separated into different units. I then brought it to our leader's attention that we had taken the enemy guns, the Parrot Cannons as our British Ally calls them. After the battle we marched onto Higo. After laying siege to the city for days, they marched out and met us on the battlefield. My unit along with three others were positioned on the left side of the Parrot Cannons while the other three line infantry units were placed on the other side. Our lord had the Levy Infantry units split into groups of three and put on our flanks. the Spear infantry were put behind the cannons. Our lord told us that we would not be fighting if possible, as he wanted to see the parrot guns in action.
As the enemy marched forward the cannons fired at them, and some of the newer soldiers were terrified at the sounds. So I stood up and sang a song from home. Soon other men joined us and the calmed the younger ones down and boosted out spirits. as the cannons fired and explosions went off in the distance, the men were distracted. but then we saw the enemy army march closer as the cannons switched to something called, Shrapnel shot. when it was fired I saw many enemy soldiers fall. Soon we were ordered to stop and get back into formation, for the enemy was in range of our muskets. we opened fire and Many Oka Soldiers fell to the ground. After many vollies from our guns the enemy retreated. The parrot gun crews were now well experienced. Our Levy Infantry saw the most action and they also were the units who lost men, 78 men from three different units. The Oka dogs attacked us with 1,160 men, they left with less than half of that. soon we began the siege of Higo. Due to our unit being under manned, our leader put us, along with others, in the rear to make sure we were safe. the battle for Higo was long, but with our Lord's coordination, and help from Artillery fire, we were able to break the Garrison and take the city. We then received word that our clan's leader has been appointed Senior Councillor. I am honored to be in his army under his command.
    Your loving Husband.

Nice work on the naval battle. In future try and keep your smaller ship in behind theirs and moving if you can since it can fire forwards. Also if you are going to turn your ship try and turn as fast as you can and ideally not through the wind (I think wind still makes a difference although could be wrong). You'll have to plan ahead for this as you are almost always going to track the enemy ship keeping them within your firing cone.

Ya, you can't truly breach the walls of these castles. The Japanese design of castles has the inside as a solid raised mound of earth, with the wall just serving as the outer retaining layer. So blasting through that wall doesn't just leave a hole granting access inside like in a typical European castle; it just exposes the dirt inside. All bombardment can do is destroy the hoardings on the top, as well as any enemy troops unfortunate enough to be standing there.
Also...you didn't need to bombard the gates. They were open the whole time.😁

All respect to the Royal Marines, but I do remember something from the Obama let's play where a comment said that the French had the best marines but worst iornclads while the British were the inverse. Obviously you can still use them, but you may want to have them supported by what would probably be statistically superior US Marines or your own soldiers.

    • @codysmith6617

No no. The US Marines are just superior. Not just statistically

Does telling certain units to retreat incur a moral penalty? If not telling them to route early in the battle seems like a good strategy if you dont want to lose them.

This is repost of my comment from part 1, I wrote it just hour before release of part 2.
little bit of topic question. Lionheartx10, when it comes to some conditions influencing the settlements in some ways like growth, number of inhabitants, religion, culture, what do you prefer?
Do you prefer the way of Medieval2TW/Third age total war, basically it has influence on public order and on being able to train certain units only if specific culture or religion is present in sufficient amount, or TWRome, where if you recruit too many units from one settlements, you significantly cripple the growth of the settlement and you won't be able to upgrade settlements anytime soon, or Warhammer, where it's just corruption influencing just public order?
And second question about diplomacy. I am not talking about the options in diplomatic actions, but about the options how to start diplomatic action. Do you prefer the old option, where you have to recruit diplomat and send him to another faction's settlement/army, or the new option - just discover them and then you will be able to do it wherever you want to?
