All of the voices in this song are Billy Joel. All of them. One guy. Many tracks. Suggestion for a future reaction: "Tell Her About It". It's another song in the style of 1950s-60s rock & roll, but Joel does a lot more other musical styles.
That form of singing is called "DO WOP" It began with groups of young men (usually) that would gather on the street or street corners and sing acapella . It was popular in the mid to late '50s and early '60s I LOVE Do Wop
Billy was divorced from his first wife and met Christie Brinkley. They started dating and he said he felt like a teenager again, so he wrote an album, “Innocent Man”, in the style of music that he grew up with. The whole album is retro. According to his daughter he wrote this song to propose to her mother. And every voice or other sound on there is Billy. They just mouth the words for the video.
Oh, so it's all multiple tracks of the same person, like Peter Hollens? I LOVE that kind of music! He makes it sound like the music of the 50's and early 60's, and yet, they couldn't really do that back then. I mean, I supposes they COULD, but it seems that nobody really thought to DO it, until... I don't know, for sure, but the first time I can think of any one artist doing all the tracks was Enya, in the late 80's. Of course, she also had instruments, and her style is WAAAAY different than Billy Joel.
Shout out to the producer/engineer of this Phil Ramone. They say he had ways of miking up stuff in the studio that were unique. He refused to share his secrets to anyone even in his final years. I kind of respect that!
Was that a picture of Elvis in the first 10 sec? My favourite Billy Joel song is River Of Dreams, thats a really good earworm classic song that stays in your head for a long time.
I can’t believe I hadn’t remembered this one. One of my favorite Billy Joel more poppy songs. A sing along joy. Honesty is also one of my faves and the one where he ripped off Beethoven (but very properly credited Ludwig)- This Night. So many good songs, so many moods and styles. One of the truly great singer/songwriter/musicians. This style is DooWop from the 50’s when Billy would have been in his teens. He’s looking back to when he felt young, alive and hopeful at his class reunion in the video.
I first found out about Billy Joel when I was a kid and Uptown Girl was a number one hit but my fav Billy Joel Song is "We Didn't Start The Fire". Makes it into my top 20 songs of all time, it's like a full on history lesson. Seeing him perform it live boggles my mind how he remembers all the lyrics. Incredible.
The whole An Innocent Man album is fantastic, but I especially like the title track, Careless Talk, Leave a Tender Moment Alone for the harmonica and This Night for the Saxophone.
It's a banger! Hands down my favorite Billy Joel song of all time. If you like this sound you're going to have to take a deep dive into Doo Wop music from the 50's and 60's. Here's a few suggestions brother, enjoy! The Elegants, Little Star The Students, I'm So Young Schoolboys, Please Say You Want Me The Dubs, Chapel of Dreams The Harptones, Life Is But A Dream Jive Five, My True Story The Duprees, You Belong To Me
It's about a NEW relationship. The man has been lonely and jaded for a long time, afraid to love. Now, he's taken a chance, thrown away his fears and inhibitions, and she has been 'wonderful so far," and "more than I hoped for." He doesn't know how long it will last, but is IN IT for as long as he has.
Steph have a listen to The River Of Dreams if you want an instant ear worm banger, an uplifting song about deceit and disappointment in people we used to trust
Fun fact
Billy Joel recorded stacked up vocals over and over again. It's actually only him in the song both on lead and as background vocals
This is actually rather interesting! Thank you for sharing :D
Yes!!.. he tried multiple groups to add the harmonies and couldn’t get the sound he wanted so he ended up recording each vocal track himself.
A la The Carpenters?! That’s AMAZING
What an incredible vocal range, too! How many octaves can he sing?!
All of the voices in this song are Billy Joel. All of them. One guy. Many tracks.
Suggestion for a future reaction:
"Tell Her About It".
It's another song in the style of 1950s-60s rock & roll, but Joel does a lot more other musical styles.
I'll add it to my list 📃😉
Billy sang all the vocals and did the finger snaps and claps.

So what you are saying is if I can write and sing like that, I too might be able to marry a Christie Brinkley

Can you tell it’s all Billy Joel’s voices? Because they’re all his voices. Amazing talent
All of his songs are different. But they’re all good. Love Billy❤
Billy Joel loves doo wap and he is giving a nod to the 60's doo wap group The Tymes' song So Much In Love. Please listen and compare.
A great song
You would probably like more 50's doo-wop, which is what this song pretty much is. And yeah, it's masterful songwriting and arranging.

I don't care what consequence it brings...I have been a fool for lesser things.... my favorite line in the song.
Bill is awesome.

Elton was a child prodigy he taught himself the piano age 7. Won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music age 11
When they went back in time, they changed the music to represent the doo woop style from that era. Excellent
Hi seph!! Good day to you
Good day!
I love Billy Joel. The Stranger, Scenes from an Italian Restaurant, Captain Jack, Piano Man, Travelling Prayer are good songs

Try Billy's, Scenes from an Italian Restaurant
Channeling the doo wop music of his childhood, their inner Frankie Valli and The 4 Seasons.
Doo Wop , all with only Billy’s voice in every part!
