Sesame Street - New Grouch in Town - Filmstrip - 1976 - Leon The Grouch - Jim Henson

This vintage Sesame Street Skills For Growing filmstrip, from the Learning About Others set, is entitled "New Grouch in Town". In the story, Leon The Grouch (voiced by Jim Henson) travels by bus to visit his cousin Oscar (voiced by Caroll Spinney) on Sesame Street. Other featured characters are Grover (who is now wearing clothes - voiced by Frank Oz), Sally, and Granny Fanny Nesselrode.
From the teacher's guide: "The overall objective of New Grouch in Town is to help children understand another person's perspective by showing them the advantage of constructive and positive approaches to social interaction. The filmstrip introduces and models the following aspects of this objective:
a) The way you behave toward other people directly affects the way they treat you,
b) The way people act toward each other affects the success or failure of group activities", and
c) "A good approach to other people includes thinking about their feelings, compromise, helpfulness and honest but considerate discussion."
"In order to emphasize the three specific objectives of the filmstrip, Leon encounters people who are so helpful to him that he finds himself saying 'thank you' several times (something unheard of for a grouch). These experiences lead him to be considerate of another person and teach him that positive social behavior benefits not only others but also himself."
