    Tuesday, May 28th at 8:13 pm ET (Half Sun) / Wednesday, May 29th 8:12pm ET (Full Sun)
    Friday, July 12th 8:20pm ET (Full Sun) / Saturday, July 13th, 8:21 pm ET (Half Sun)
    Four evenings a year, the brick, steel, and asphalt of Manhattan's cityscape take part in a unique alignment of metropolis and cosmos. The rays of the setting sun align perfectly with Manhattan's street grid-framed by skyscrapers and creating a breathtaking wash of illumination along the cross streets. Frederick P. Rose Hayden Planetarium Director Neil deGrasse Tyson first noted the phenomenon more than a decade ago and coined the term "Manhattanhenge."
    In this video, Tyson discusses how he came up with the name and what future anthropologists might make of New York City's serendipitous alignment with the sun.

    If they concluded that America was all about war and baseball they wouldn't be far wrong, would they?

    Great commentary, as usual. Slight clarification: actually the equinoxes are now around 20 March and 22 September. See Wikipedia.

    Is there anything written about why the original planners of Manhattan chose to rotate the street grid?

    This video clearly proves that we have misinterpreted the history and have made wrong assumptions about the early civilisations

    • @waswestkan
      @waswestkan 9 лет назад

      Swarad Gat T's not necessarily so. History is his one thing, archeology/prehistory is another. History based on actual texts should be correct to a large degree. at best archeology/prehistory is guesstimate. For example the Baghdad battery. Even if recreations can make a battery, doesn't mean the culture associated with used it as a battery. Until evidence found that that culture used it as a an electrical current source, should be false to say that culture created the first battery.

    • @swaradgat1778
      @swaradgat1778 9 лет назад

      waswestkan yeah the TEXTS are correct cause the ppl have ACTUALLY written them. But we have done a lot of guess work in predicting the way the ppl lived by examining certain monuments or clues. Some of the predictions may be logically correct but some are not. That's what my point is

    How about "street-henge"?

  • @RedroomStudios
    @RedroomStudios 11 лет назад

    you're right... but in this case they were. the avenues run generally parallel to the length of the island while the streets run perpendicular to them. if you look at a map of Manhattan it makes complete sense. no other arrangement would be as efficient.
    I think you are on a bit of a wild goose chase here.

    it`s not that the street grid is rotated, it is that the island of Manhattan does not lay on a north south axis. no mystery about it.

  • @RedroomStudios
    @RedroomStudios 11 лет назад

    yes, I get that. the part that is stupid to me is where he envisions this phenomenon being discovered by future beings after some apocalypse ends our civilization and they try to decipher it's meaning. By doing so he seems to imply that alignments at ancient ruins may also just be random phenomena that we have given undeserved meaning to... which is certainly not the case.

    this seems a bit pointless... Stonehenge and other ancient ruins are aligned to certain positions of the sun that act as a calendar - lining up with the solstices and equinoxes, not random days like May 28 and July 11.
