Exploring Abandoned Mill Cottages: A Forgotten Village Lost in Time

- Join us as we venture into the eerie remnants of abandoned mill cottages, once part of a thriving village now lost to history. In this video, we uncover the stories hidden within these decaying walls, offering a glimpse into a past long forgotten. The original mill had been demolished years ago. Leaving these lovely buildings no longer required.
We came across these amazing old houses by chance while we were out to film at another location. We are so glad we had the chance to see these so well preserved, and hopefully these will one day be restored to their former glory.
Sadly, since our initial visit, we've learned that some of these buildings have been vandalized. We're deeply saddened by this and urge everyone to respect and preserve these historical sites. Let's ensure that these pieces of our heritage are protected for future generations to explore and appreciate.
If you enjoyed this video please give us a thumbs up and consider subscribing!

Wow what a stunning location and place. Should be a crime to leave it to rot and lay empty. Great video, thank you 👍🏼
It kind of cries out to be an artists colony. Could be some wonderful live/work situations. Reproduction metal and plaster work must be needed for people restoring older buildings. And tiles, too. Could be a real tourist draw as well.
Its really sad that people could come together to vandalize a place instead of coming together to motivate the place to be fixed up for people who need a new start in life😢 i would surely love to live in one of these places and in such a small community ❤
Amazing find. Thanks for sharing it as lovely to see , esp as you state it has since been vandalised. Can’t believe what enjoyment people get out of wrecking property. They must be sad, inadequate human beings to do so.
Why does anyone fail to see the beauty in the area and the clock tower building? So many people homeless and this place left to rot.
It’d be lovely to see some photos of when this place was lived in 🏴🇬🇧
It never ceases to baffle me. How do these building come to be just left? Someone must own them , they have value so ??? Its frkn criminal to see this when so many are struggling on the streets or or in inadequate accommodation.
Wow, I was at an army camp in Hampshire about 40 years ago and this is the spitting image of where we were housed, right down to the barrier at the side. It brings back lots of memories.
I was stationed in Winchester, that had one or two camps nearby.
It's always sad to see such beautiful houses abandoned and forgotten.
Nice video.
So sad these places could be brought back to life
What a waste of a stunning village ! 😔🙏🏻
Wow..... gorgeous houses, gorgeous stained glass , gorgeous french windows......l want one! 😅🥰
It never ceases to amaze me that there are so many people who are homeless and you have all these abandoned places which can easily be brought back to livable condition for the homeless people
The problem is location. These places are abandoned because the industry they supported is no longer there. And homeless people need more support to get back on their feet than can be provided in such remote locations. I think there are good things that could be done with such places, but they have to be almost self supporting.
I used to work on the upkeep of properties used for housing the homeless. Trust me - if you refurbished those buildings - they would end up back in this state.
That's so beautiful, and so sad 😢
I lived in the large white house whilst we did the demolition and remediation of this site. I was the project manager and designer on the project and we won an industry award for it.
@@Bernard-ux2eb hi , very interesting. We would love you to comment again and tell us a bit more about this! Could you edit your first comment or remove the location name though? Due to the area being targeted by vandals. Thanks 👍
@@18milessouth Done.
We did the asbestos strip, demolition including explosive demolition of the water tower, broke out the slab and culverted section of the river, built a river diversion and excavated all the contaminated soil to off-site disposal.
Then we rebuilt the river. A 600mm compacted clay liner, imported topsoil, installed coir mat and rock armour seeded it. That's what you see today.
Closed and filled the river diversion and opened the newly formed channel.
The area floods regularly and it was a nightmare of a job. Total for £4.5m for the project.
Won a Brownfield Briefing award for the project.
@@Bernard-ux2eb Thankyou so much for this insight! And congratulations to you for the award. We had read about the works, so it's really great to hear from someone involved 👍
@@18milessouth It was one of the smallest projects I've ever done, but by far the most fun.
@@Bernard-ux2ebdo you know what the plans are for the future?
I would love to buy one of those buildings, do it up and move in. Wish I knew where it was.
Me too Nicholas’s so wrong to just be left like that
I can't believe how good the builings look. If this place was anywhere need where I live the whole place would have been flattened by vandals by know.
I would love to live there!!
That bedroom fireplace is called "sunflower". I fitted the exact same one in my Victorian terrace. Great explore!
I wish young bad boys didnt vandalize these lovely mill cottages its wicked there very nice buildings😮

It would have been great to hear the history of each building along with filming 🫤
@@susanrice3166 Hi Susan, sorry but at the time of visiting we didn't know much about the site as we hadn't expected to come across these buildings. Hopefully any future videos we will research before visiting.
I know this place !! I used to load waste paper from there many years ago. I won't name it but it's in Devon.
Would you believe it? The clocktower building was built to commerrorate the silver jubilee of Queen Victoria!
She didn't celebrate her 25th silver jubilee year.
@@margaretpierce5268 Hi Margaret, you are absolutely right. While learning the history of this area, we learnt that the building was commissioned to celebrate the 25th year of her reign, but indeed she did not celebrate with the Jubilee due to the recent death of her husband amongst other things
That was fascinating, thank you, the loft looked creepy.
@@annenewton5403 thanks, really glad you enjoyed it
Wow that is amazing, so sad when places get left to rot, wonder who ownes or owned and why they have been left, being kept would have made really good occupancy.
The mill is on an estate owned by the NT.
@@stevewallis1087 Arnt they supposed to restore?.
@@joanware6473I would have thought so but I've lost faith in the NT, I think they are just land grabbers.
It would be wonderful if good people were able to find ways of taking other good like-minded people on tours of places like this. Charter a coach etc.
Just subscribed absolutely fascinating, great video, and put together perfectly 😊
@@joannetwigg3406 thank you very much. As a new channel this means a lot to us! 🙏
where is this place too
These cottages should be restored in order to house people. It is criminal to let them rot like this.
Very nice video. Looks a lovely place to actually renovate the buildings & grounds & move in. Although they are abandoned they look fairly clean inside & wasn’t there electric lights on?. How do people find these places to walk around,I’d love to do something like this. Great video though 👍
Thanks for the great comments 👍. We found this by chance when we were in the area.
It is such a shame as those properties would make fantastic houses for families.
Someone must be caring for these structures. They look to be in remarkably good shape for being empty for so long.
Someone save that black fireplace and the stained glass windows please!!!
You've made it seem very isolated, but there are people living in homes very close by, people working on remediation on parts of the site, a big tourist attraction nearby and a major motorway only 500m away!
@@apc108 Hi Alan , yes you're indeed right , but once there it does feel isolated when you are there
Lovely places. Hope if they are on NT land they are one day restored. Would make good holiday lets or rentals. 👍😀 Otherwise such a sad loss.
@@stephnewman1357 we hope so too, it would make great holiday accommodation
No way they should be homes for real people not just holiday let's. There are so many people who could make use of them. Do them up and rent them out. If I had the money I would do that.
Could of been used for military or army training in the 80s where properties down in rural Dorset are like this, or some sort of test area, this area would be great for the homeless who ever owns this land and houses.
All the homeless people should be given the opportunity to live there and take care of the places to save it.
I’d love to be able to buy that place and save it.
WAS THINKING 💭🤔 THE EXACT SAME THING. THE COST TO MAKE THEM HABITABLE PROBABLY CHEAPER THAN WHAT THE GOVERNMENT SPENDS ON GOVERNMENT HOUSING. WHAT A WASTE.
Not big enough for ALL the homeless people sadly but I know what you mean. Just incredible that it is abandoned. Someone must own it all.
@@suziemorgan-stewart918It's apparently owned by the NT.
@@sallyk9 thank you. I am surprised they are letting it deteriorate 🥹
I think all of us that comment say the same thing such a shame these buildings are left to rot when so many are homeless.
The filthy rich owners can afford to leave all this to rot when so many people are homeless. The council should force purchase of them after they are empty for more that a year.
Filthy rich? It was a paper mill that closed down. It is probably in the middle of nowhere.
@@car7productions731 It is the middle of nowhere, but is a short distace from a city , the place is part of an estate owned by the National trust.
@@stevewallis1087 So not filthy rich. You will probably also know that a small fortune has already been spent cleaning the site and river of pollutants and that the remaining buildings are a small % of the original plant. Also that the cost of refurbing abandoned buildings is far greater than new build. Why would the Government bother to refurb these buildings for "the homeless" when they could just assign some land and build something more appropriate?
@@car7productions731 yes the leese's did spend a fortune clearing the site, and yes it is cheaper to build new as no vat to pay on new build but to referb you pay vat and lets face it the buildings have been messed about a lot since they were last lived in.
The costs would be enormous. Plus, to house 'the homeless' these places have to be managed properly. It's not just a case of 'doing them up' - there are a myriad of other factors to consider. And trust me, I've worked in the upkeep of properties used by the homeless, and it's heart-breaking - we have renovated flats - simply to have some of them trashed within weeks, some are grateful for sure - but many couldn't care less.
So many people without homes. The government should have the authority to take this over for people to live in. So sad… 😢😢👎🏴🇬🇧
Since when has the government ever given a shit about any of us
@@Robby_UKUnfortunately people still the government cares about them.
@@Robby_UKback between the wars, the government , with local authorities build Loads of little Council estates at the edge of Almost every Town and village .....for local people...with tiny Bungalows for the elderly ....Mainly sold off under Thatcher....stupidly! Sorely needed NOW!!
As long as the homes go to indigenous British people who have been on waiting lists for years.
Apparently the National Trust own the buildings and the old Mill. Hopefully they'll do something with them ASAP before some idiots ruin them forever.
I love all the buildings. Just wish you would not skip any rooms.
@@Lisa-ds3sw Hi Lisa, the rooms we didn't go in were literally bare modern walls which we thought were not great viewing. Glad you liked the buildings!
Thank you for answering my question about the other room. I love watching your channel. It's something I have always wanted to do myself.
Why can we not regenerate these places people are homeless yet we leave these to rot. I am sure people would love to live there.

Its just ashame that group of say 5 families couldn't just move in and clear the place, it would cost the owner a lot tp get them out. What a shame
Yup - they would move in, trash the place, and cause the owners further financial loss. Have you ever worked with housing the homeless? - I have - it's not all rose-tinted, believe me.
What a waste of properties could be a lovely place
You didn't hang around when you came across that swarm of bees!! 😅
what county are these abandoned building in? It would be interesting to find out more of the history
@@andrewevans2140 this is in the South West of England. Sorry I can't give the location. the mill business was no longer profitable so bit by bit the area became disused. We are hopeful they will be saved
It should be compulsory purchased as should all long abandoned buildings including those in our towns and cities/brown field sites and converted into accommodation. I live in South Devon and we have an estimated 5000 homeless people living in our area, a disgraceful situation in the 21at century in what is supposed to be a civilised first world country. The fat cat owners should be ashamed.
It's interesting that you assume the owners have vast wealth. Why?
Beautiful places, why its abandoned? It is open for sales?

Scandalous that it's all left to rot. There should be some way of forcing the owners to sell or rent.
Why is it empty. As so many people need homes.
@@AnneDouglas-hf2bf the mill slowly went into decline and so the buildings were no longer used, eventually it all closed down
If the government took it over, houses like these should go to indigenous British people.

@@LB13579 it's a real shame, gutting to see them just left
And there's lack of houses in the country?
I don't understand why these properties are not costing owners Council Tax. When I have a vacant rental property vacant, I have to pay the Council Tax on it. £200+/month is a good incentive to find new tenants...
It’s things like this that prove we don’t have a housing shortage.
