I've heard a similar story shared before and to be quite frank, I'd see a situation such as this as a major red flag for a company...I just find it highly unethical for any company to deliberately underpay or undervalue a client/employee and not expect for there to be negative feels afterwards...I think transparency would go a long way in situations such as these...if this happened with me I personally would not go near that company every again...
