  • Some footage from the amazing experience of swimming with reef manta rays (mobula alfredi), during our stay at Barefoot Manta Resort in Fiji's Yasawa archipelago.
We visited Barefoot Manta during the final week of April, which is right at the start of the manta season. We knew it was likely that we wouldn't get to see any mantas, and didn't get our hopes up, but in the end we got really lucky and got to see them on five consecutive days!
As well as being an excellent location for seeing the mantas, the coral reef around Drawaqa Island (where Barefoot Manta is located) is absolutely stunning (need to make another video for that), as a result of the marine protected zone around the north part of the island. The reef is also accessible any time of the day (regardless of the tides) from one of the three beaches - this is not the case at many of the other resorts in the Yasawa Islands.
Videos were filmed on my Akaso V50 action camera, inside a waterproof enclosure.

I was at Barefoot in October 2022 for a month, doing an environmental science survey on microplastics and I didn't get to see them. I'm jealous!

Such a shame you were there for so long and didn't get to see them! We got so lucky to see them so many times. Although I think October is close to the end of the season.
