Why We Left Halifax Nova Scotia after 20 years of City Living

- In this week's video we're making our way around Cape Breton island and discussing the reasons why we left and sold everything in Halifax. Halifax is the capital city of Nova Scotia and we recently sold our condo in downtown Halifax after living there for over 20 years.
In the video we visit the beautiful Inverness Beach on an incredible summer day. Inverness beach has very warm water and is one of our favourite beaches in Nova Scotia. We also hit up Whit's Public House at Cabot Links.
Later in the video we head to an area we've never been to in Cape Breton called West Bay. Here we stay at a beautiful cottage at Piper's Creek Cottages. Book your cottage stay here: www.piperscree...
A huge thank you to Piper's Creek Cottages for hosting us for this video! These cottages are absolutely amazing, fully stocked, well decorated with great views and includes a hot tub!

Moved back to the Halifax area in 2019 after 4 years in the Philippines and a year in Guatemala. I made a spreadsheet of fixed costs expenses such as property tax, cell plans, water, internet etc. 5 years later and most of those are up 35-50 percent. Your point about eating out here is bang on. My wife and I love going out for dinner. 5 years ago average was $50. It’s now around $80. My pension has not increased that much. We have lived 16 years outside of Canada and it may be the best option if it keeps going up here
It's our best option that's for sure! - Trevor
I just visited Mabou and Inverness for the first time last month and WOW ! Cape Breton really is just as beautiful as everyone says. I’ve lived in NS my whole life and just never made it that way. Living in Sambro NS and while it’s still in the city limits, when I come home, I feel like I’m in the country. I’ve learned to cook a lot of things I love as you’re so right, eating out has gone up exponentially in the city (And everywhere in NS it seems). Wishing you all the best on this next journey in your guys’ life. Thanks for the videos and always showing us how beautiful this world is. ❤
Those cottages are amazing! That’s all a person really needs to live in these days with the rising costs of housing in Canada. Great tour and awesome video! Thanks for always making my Sundays that much better!
Anyone could easily live in these gorgeous cottages for sure 🤗 - Anna
Great video guys! The rubber ducky with sunglasses in the hot tub at the end…PRICELESS lol 😂
lol.. thanks guys 🐥
Good morning all happy Sunday morning to all of you guys and I enjoy your channel and you all amazing supporter
👋Hello Edward! Have a great day - Trevor
Another great Sunday morning video. Can’t wait to see where you go and what you get up to.
🤗
🙂❤👍Good Morning Trevor & Anna🙂Hope You're Enjoying this Long Labour Day Weekend 🙂Another Awesome Adventure of Exploring the Beautiful East Coast of Canada Safe Travels 🙂❤👍
🤗 Thanks for watching - Anna
Wait till you get to the States - you’ll see the same prices at hotels and restaurants, but those are American dollars! You got the RV though.👍
Halifax is beautiful! And so is the entire Nova Scotia coast from Amherst to Cape Breton Island and down to Halifax, Lunenburg ❤️, Yarmouth, and the Annapolis Valley. It has a special kind of beauty throughout; it’s tranquil, quaint, it cradles you…it has a soul.
For sure, the CAD dollar right now doesn't help. The thing is though, groceries, gas, alcohol etc in the USA are cheaper than Canada. Even with the conversion I'd argue the US is cheaper (depending where you are at of course). Hotels.. no 😜 - Trevor
Oh how exciting to be financially independent & able to go wherever you want to! I really think you’ve done the right thing & wish you lots of happiness & wonderful experiences ❤
We got some big adventures coming up! Get ready 🤙 - Trevor
They are flat broke and had to do this to survive.
Thanks guys!
🤗
We've been kicking around leaving Halifax as well. In next couple of years we may end up in the Valley or somewhere near Truro, which keeps us close to the city and our doctor(s)
Closer to the wine! We get it 😉 - Trevor
We are in Windsor, much lower cost of living, lovely property and 45 mins to get into the city when needed.
Yes those cottages are nice. Very unique.
That’s all they have to their name
@Dee-pj7hh 💯
Thank you so much for doing your videos, during covid i was planning to migrate to Halifax with my family and stumble upon your videos on Halifax. I'm from Malaysia btw. Anyway long story short, we did not get selected for migration and opted not to pursue anymore and luckily we didn't because we would have found it too expensive with the current price of everything in Halifax. Love your videos and keep up the awesome energy traveling to world. All the best!!!
We so want to get back to Malaysia! Especially the north 🤗 - Anna
Love the video as usual. Don’t blame you guys at all about leaving Halifax, we have lived there several times over the years and it is ridiculous. All the best on your new adventures 🎉
100%! It's just getting out of hand at this point. Time for a change 🤗- Anna
@@DelightfulTravellers it’s beyond out of hand. Every time we go back there are more high rise buildings around in our opinion it has lost a lot of its charm.
@@HomeAwayTravel we actually don’t mind the high rises if they keep the historic buildings (which they seem to be) We like the change there… but it’s just too pricey now overall - Trevor
@@DelightfulTravellers yup far too expensive. love your guys decision to RV. Look forward following along👏👏
All sounds great until you get sick and are unable to travel along with not having a home. I actually love Halifax and is less expensive than most major cities. You are comparing Halifax to a Banana Republic. From what I hear you are just trying to convince yourself that your decision to leave are justified.
Good for you two! Life is forever changing. 35 years in the military I can’t tell you how many times we’ve moved. It’s always exciting. Love the beaches, cottage and kudos on the brunch looked delicious! Great drone shots too! ~Cara ❤
Thanks guys! 😀 - Trevor
scary and exciting at the same time!!
We're on the excited side Taki 😉 - Trevor
I'm from the east coast of Cape breton cbrm nice to see nova scotians here
🤗
Can never beat the bueaty of the East Coast one of the best and safest places to live anywhere how lucky we are as Nova Scotian's that beer looks good i love Inverness amazing place. Also nice place of stay them are nice cottages. The cost of life is getting wild all over Canada lets hope it gets better one day soon.
You can't beat NS in the summer 🤗 - Anna
@@DelightfulTravellersIndeed a very warm Summer it was on the Coast Of Chester Basin where i live.
Hey guys 👋🏼
I fall in love with the small house 🥰. But to build it at Las terrenas 😁
🥰
Couldn't agree more!
Western Cape Breton is undoubtedly the nicest part of Nova Scotia. I don't care for Inverness although Mabou, Margaree, and Iona are absolutely gorgeous.
Also agree that Halifax is awful due to unaffordability and the influx of come from aways and weirdos all over the city. I plan on leaving too, and would go international as well.
Smart move to sell as you'd have made bank due to the increase in home prices. Invest those funds and allow the interest to offset your travel.
Thumbs up for Ted Lasso as well.
You can't beat western CB! - Trevor
If you think about it it‘s not necessarily the actual costs that have gone up but the value of the CAD that‘s tanked druing the last 13 years. During my stay in Toronto back in 2011 the CAD-CHF exchange rate was 0.90, now it‘s 0.63. I‘m using my own currency the Swiss Franc as the benchmark because it‘s one of the most stable currencies worldwide.
Not quite… the costs have gone way up. If you live in Canada and you don’t travel the dollar going south doesn’t matter in general. At the same time the CAD dollar has always fluctuated and isn’t that much different than 10 years ago honestly - Trevor
I'm Really sure there are many Canadians doing the exact same thing. Moving from Canada. Its getting so expensive to live here. I'm 58 and ready to retire with my Filipina wife. So you can guess where I'll be going. I'm sure that is one of your favorite places as well. The RV life is an excellent idea for Canada as well. Thanks for another video. Cheers
Luv the PH! Which part will you retire in? - Anna
@@DelightfulTravellers Probably in the Dumaguete area. My wife's family lives just North of there outside Jimalalud.
So II guess we thought u would be staying in ur RV , whats the story or use as we say in the states , was not the goal to save money and travel and live in the RV ? Great video and beach. Guys I wouldn't call drone views like this. hahaha got to love ya! Continue renting in the Dr , airbnb rules and changes will be affecting everywhere . I was thinking of purchasing in Cabarete also , I travel regularly there.
Thanks for watching! - Trevor
If you think Halifax is unaffordable you should come out to Vancouver.
Oh we know all about Vancouver! Someday will visit that city (very quickly) 😜 - Trevor
@@delftblue8801
It's always been expensive but now it's over the top.
ok, but the average person in Halifax makes much less money than a vancouverite, and the taxes are super high.
Been there 2 months ago. But too many mushrooms.
Hi guys. What does it mean to renew your mortgage?
So in Canada, most mortgages 'renew' every 5 years. So the interest rate will adjust at that time. Right now, the rates are higher than 5 years ago so we would have paid more per month if we renewed this year - Anna
@@DelightfulTravellers That does suck. Good move.
It's not Halifax anymore, it's Lil' TO!
🤣
You are just too use of the third world cost of living with a first world salary. For the locals in these third world country cost if living is high .
Right that's it 🙄 You do know we've been to the USA, Canada, Denmark, Saint Martin, Anguilla, Antigua, England and Scotland all within the past year? We have a pretty good idea how developed and developing countries cost of living is at this point. Prices are rising everywhere - Anna
@@DelightfulTravellers And Dominican Republic and Mexico are great when you have a first world salary, not for the locals with their salary .
Guess you deleted my post. Guess you didn’t like truth.
No one has deleted your comment. Someone else even replied to it. - Anna
Which post? This one: "All sounds great until you get sick and are unable to travel ..."?
Sorry but hilarious, you moved from Halifax about 80 Kms down the road saying why Halifax was so bad?. Think you need a quick visit to Toronto or Vancouver.
My gf and I just had a road trip from Toronto through NB, NS and PEI. And without doubt NS was the highlight and most beautiful, your roads are so not busy and safe vs Toronto. Most ppl are still white and friendly speaking Canadian English. Easily the best area to consider living in. And the point being Halifax was actually not a bad city, yes it has run down areas but in general it’s safe, it has great shops, nightlife, friendly ppl and above all the traffic is fantastic
Except they never compared it to Ontario. They're saying all of Canada sucks. NS has the highest taxes in the country depending on your income, and no matter what its top 3. Ontario's look great in comparison.
are you sure you visited Halifax? it is definitely beautiful but traffic is horrible, and no, I really don't think most people here are white
You guys bought 3 homes and an RV and you're bitching about affordability? Lol!
If you think Halifax is unaffordable you should come out to Vancouver.
or Toronto
Been to TO... Hfx is not too far off of those prices at this point - Trevor
Big difference is very low wages and high taxes. I left years ago to seek out an actual living but had to come back for family reasons - and I'm lucky I ported my job with me. I don't know what people do for a living here or how they survive.
Great video guys 💯✌🏼
Thanks for sharing this with us all. Cheers from 2 Canadians 🇨🇦 living in Mexico. 🇲🇽✌🏼🥰
So appreciate you guys commenting every week 🥰 - Anna
We live in Windsor, about 45 mins outside the city. My husband commutes to his office twice a week and we have maybe 1/3 of the cost of being in the city (I run a local piano studio and do RUclips so no commuting needed for me!). It’s a win-win for us, we have a lovely home with a garden and a gorgeous view and no city prices. All the best!
That sounds like the perfect setup 👌😀 - Trevor
My niece moved to Halifax this summer. She got a nursing job at IWK Health Centre. She was having a hard time finding an affordable place. She had no choice but to take this apartment that is $3000.00 a month. Luckily she found a roommate to share expenses. She loves it there but she finds it very expensive to live there. She wants to move back to PEI.
It's honestly a great city.... it's just not easy to live in these days - Trevor
Canadian here that owns property in DR Cabarete! Cost of living has gone up significantly there as well
Sad to see you go but at the same time we can enjoy your travels through your channel. I am sitting on my back deck in Dartmouth (across the Harbour from Halifax) after having enjoyed some Mountain Biking this morning within 10 minutes of our house! Yup cost of living has become quite a challenge as our kids have found but truly, our son living in Ottawa is paying the same and more to Halifax and yes there are other places in Canada that have gone up as well.
We too are starting to travel a lot more and we feel pretty fortunate to be able to do that. Coming home always feels good.
In the end, we love living here with our activities centred around gravel cycling, hiking, skiing, camping and much to my wife’s disappointment, one of my passions includes Off Road Moto. We go out for dinner etc but not a ton as we enjoy cooking at home so cost of things like restaurants not as big a factor.
I wanted to put in a positive note to living in Nova Scotia. Cost aside, the proximity we have to many of the activities we choose to enjoy makes living here wonderful. Having lived in Ontario in the past, proximity to those activities was hours not minutes…Ottawa excluded….awesome cycling and skiing and just a fun city!
Thanks for such a great comment 🥰 Nova Scotia is such a great province. We'll miss it. It must be extra special having lived in Ontario. It's small, charming and there's a lot to do. For us though, it's still not enough. The costs are too high for what we get in return and plus... it's time for a change. There's more of the world to see and live in - Anna
Hi guys, the Cottage was beautiful. Anna, your meal looks yummy. I didn't like the beach . Besitos
The meal was so so good! 😋 - Trevor
DOn't come move to Vancouver, its crazy expensive there now. We are thinking of moving out your way, but outside of Halifax
Good to know about Van! - Anna
Nice job. Love yr attitude most of all. I like easy pivoters (that’s not a word). Invest the money u have till u buy or not buy - some good simple high interest rates sill there. Sure u guys know.
💯 Thanks so much! - Anna
Wow beautiful beach, cute cabins. Very nice video, great info. Thanks and Cheers!!
