This was a really enlightening story. As an IT guy, I've always been overwhelmed by the fact that I knew my knowledge of IT security was only a spit in the ocean. The common person has absolutely no idea how intelligent modern hackers are.
Cheers to all the hats out there.

As a 30 yo dev who started young, choose white hat if you're going into hacking. Good is really rewarding in many ways especially with the power of the internet. The first time you see an open source project get a lot of downloads or your code get pushed to production and executed on thousands or millions of machines is orders of magnitude greater than sitting alone and getting someone elses credentials.

Abusing technology to fit your goal is hacking. Ultimately, DoS is achieved by abusing design aspects of TCP, UDP, ICMP, HTTP etc. Buying a botnet or renting bots to perform DDoS attacks is not hacking in itself, but the act of DoSing computer systems most definitely counts as hacking.

To put into perspective how wild the hacking scene is for anyone that’s interested: to many older hackers (people who were part of the scene back then), MafiaBoy is considered pretty… lame. He didn’t do anything extremely complex and/or impressive, especially by today’s standards where anyone with a brain and an internet connection can learn about DDOS attacks.
