Tokyo Jihen/Incidents is no "usual J-pop" - they're a rock band, and amongst the most creative ones of this XXI century, period. Verging on prog, jazz, funk or punk brillance, or whatever they want to play. Superior musicians will a real genius (Shiina Ringo) leading them. Shiina Ringo being the most important female musician of the last 20 years - for me of course, but I'm not alone 😉. Anyway, when reviewing Tokyo Incidents or Shiina Ringo, I always recommand live versions - they're killers on stage.
Tokyo Jihen are far more jazz tinged (Shinjuku-style) art-rock than J-Pop per say, plus they can switch genres effortlessly; but most of the members have successfully written or produced J-Pop for other artists. Sheena Ringo & bassist Seiji Kameda are the most high profile names, but both the guitarist Ukigmo and keys player Izawa Ichiyo also lead their own bands, Petrolz and Appa respectively. This video having loads of strange visuals was referencing a lot of their previous MVs, as it was part of their return from a literal eight year gigging hiatus (Feb 29 2012-Feb 29 2020). They're the type of band that excel live and never perform a song quite the same way twice. Can definitely recommend falling down this rabbit hole.
They (and Sheena Ringo) have been a very big source of inspiration for jpop/rock since 2000. Their influence is particularly strong on the generation that spent their youth in the 00s and the early 10s, the generation that is now at the forefront of music. Yoasobi, Zutomayo, Yonezu kenshi, King gnu, Ado, Bandmaid, and many more artists had influence from them. What a legend.
IMO, the greatest band of the last 50 years in any country/style - just endlessly fruitful. I listen to them all the time and keep getting more and more from their work - as someone commented below they are also killer live. And Sheena Ringo is peerless. Thanks for reacting!
Yeah, very cool group. Saw them at Budokan in 2012. The backing musicians are very good, particularly Seiji Kameda, the bassist-there's hardly an artist in Japan he hasn't produced or played for over the past 30 years. Ringo Sheena has been a favorite of and influence on many female vocalists in Japan over the past 20 years. This particular song is the theme for one of the anime "Detective Conan" movies.
Sheena Ringo and Tokyo Incidents are so cool - the musical variety that Sheena shows in her music is amazing and I don't know any other artists that comes close to her in that regard. She even has done covers of French chanson (in French) and German classical music (in German), and Grunge, Ska, Electro, Jazz, Bigband...
"What is this?" This is one of the projects by musical genius Sheena Ringo. You could probably do a series of reactions on just the different versions of her song Marunouchi Sadistic. Her lives are fascinating as well.
Well, Tokyo Jihen and Sheena Ringo herself are not ordinary J-POP musicians. Strictly speaking, they are not J-POP at all. They are just extraordinary Japanese music phenomena. 😁
Generally their music is Fusion Jazz. You need listen more to Tokyo Incidents (Keshou Naoshi if you like Bossanova) and you will fall to Ringo, she is queen.
Sheena is The Queen, and Tokyo Inceidents are her Knights. Sheena has covered the whole musical spectrum over decades, mostly with her band - rock chic, pop, diva, alternate, soundtracks, orchestral, jazz, and in three languages.
Most versatile female composer on the planet.

"are more jazz tinged (Shinjuku-style) art-rock than J-Pop" Bingo! And they manage to do that in a way that has a lot of popular appeal.

Yup, cited as an influence by mitski, rina sawayama, mika, ado, fishdoll, fujii kaze, chai, atarashii gakko!, perfume, millennium parade, king gnu, tricot, ikkyu nakajima, bish, marie ueda, aina the end, seiko oomori, keiketsu, yuu, go!go!7188, yasuha kominami, aimer, polkadot stingray, lisa, shiritsu ebisu chugaku, kom_i, utaha, mugino yui, himeno usagi, hinata halu, hisui daria, yoasobi and no doubt many more!
