Even if china got 100% of its energy from imports. The US wouldn't block these imports because of how crucial china is to the global economy.
It wouldn't make sense to try to cripple China's economy, because that would affect other countries the exact same way, including the United States.
And China's importance is not shrinking, it continues to grow. With china moving up the value chain, and trade with other countries growing rapidly.

CO2 per capita is one measure but it does not push to the responsible party to take action. China produces 30% CO2 because it manufactures 30% of goods. Most of CO2 is not caused by individual citizen. In US, CO2 is largely produced by individual citizen (e.g. automobiles). I am glad that Chinese government take strong actions by being willing to take the responsibility as a world citizen. On the country, US often accuses other countries while taking near no action to cope the climate crisis.

    A few things to say:
1 - While I appreciate that CO2 production volume is what it is, I really don't think those figures should be shown without a breakdown of per capita use. It would be like comparing USA to UK.
2 - In these kinds of conversations, there is rarely any mention of the decades (centuries?) of harmful emissions produced by the "developed" world. There is certainly a cumulative effect over time, and it's conveniently easy to point the finger at "developing" nations in the present, forgetting the damage done in the past.
3 - While China may not be "perfect" (no country is) it must be said that this kind of planning, execution and progress simply couldn't happen in a country where leadership is not actively dedicated to improving the quality of life and welfare of its people, and where the government can change every four years, undoing the achievements of the past if they choose to. The "democratic" model of voter representation in many countries is not the sole viable system of governance.
(note - I'm a UK citizen who has lived in China for almost 20 years and become increasingly impatient with the anti-Chinese narrative continuously peddled by the Western media and politicians. I am still frequently amazed by what this country and its people achieve, and consider myself very lucky to be living here.)

As for the historic carbon, couldnt agree more despite UK coming out in top place! Maybe 3 graphs, historical emissions. 50 yrs and current to give scale! China working out they dont have to import decent coal from Australia and oil from the war mongering Middle East means they can become vastly richer by producing their own power and its clean!

Bro this news reporter is so clueless... China's efforts since 2006 are already paying off in terms of air quality.
Infact, Chinese people live 2 years longer now because of improving air quality... If you look at China's air quality in 2011, and look at China's air quality now, the difference is literally night and day. The air quality has improved significantly, and continues to improve.

another highly biased report. on a per capita basis, Chinese emission is much lower when compared to the US - this happens even when China is actually building numerous industrial products for the entire world. a far better metrics would be the emission required for all your actual consumptions, otherwise nations can just "outsource" their emission and start pointing fingers.

Whenever Chinese build a solar panel farm, they also need to build a coal fired power plant as the backup since the sun light isn't available in bad weather day or at night. They would generate the electricity using the backup coal fired power plants in those circumstances. So building more coal fired power plants doesn't mean they would use them as a sole energy provider for the manufacturering sector. Ofc their energy storage capacity is growing too, they would even reduce the backup coal fired power plants in the future. Go China go

"In first place on the rankings, the US has released more than 509Gt CO2 since 1850 and is responsible for the largest share of historical emissions, Carbon Brief analysis shows, with some 20% of the global total. China is a relatively distant second, with 11%, followed by Russia (7%), Brazil (5%) and Indonesia (4%). The latter pair are among the top 10 largest historical emitters, due to CO2 from their land. And per capita, China is only 7.44 metric ton per capita while US is still 14.4 metric ton per capita. "
China at best is in the middle of the pack among the develop countries. And it is developed countries not developing countries. If China is classifying as a developing country, then it emission is really low.
Of course Singapore media are probably funded by the west so they always tend to find negative view. But China has 50% capacity for renewable energy. And by this rate, China will never catch up to US CO2 emission despite 4 times the population.

China is relentlessly pursuing energy independence, driven by a desperate need to evade the choking grip of the U.S. 7th and 5th fleets in potential military confrontations. While presenting a facade of commitment to renewables with the construction of solar and wind farms, China is aggressively ramping up its coal and nuclear capacities. This dual strategy is a calculated Hail Mary to secure a robust and unassailable energy arsenal, prioritizing survival and strategic autonomy over global environmental goals.

China in 2023 produced twice amount of electricity than US but since China has 4 times the population so every Chinese consumes only half the electricity of an average American! An Singaporean for example actually consumes 8921 kWh/year against an Chinese at 5474 kWh/year. Thus a Singaporean consumes 62% more electricity than a Chinese.
Also every large economy is still dependent on fossil fuel. US has gas, oil and coal and can afford to use more gas than other countries. China's main fossil source is coal so it uses coal but that is another source of attack.
The important information is China is committed the targets of maximum carbon and carbon neutrality and its progress is the fastest in the world. China is the world leader in each of hydro, wind, solar and battery for energy storage.
As an example last year in 2023 China installed 217 GW of solar power in 12 month and that is more than biggest solar capacity in any country because the second runner-up US at the end of 2023 has only 179GW solar power.

The West will never be happy with China. While China actually applies itself to renewable energy, the others will point at the coal plants only. When the time comes that the emissions have dropped so considerably that China is no longer the largest polluter, the West will find something else to identify as negative, instead of following the good example. If all else fails, they will bring up "the tanks" again. It's pathetic. And I say this as a Westerner.
One of the things I appreciate and admire about China is their patience. They don't get involved in this nonsense. They just keep growing, keep learning, keep getting better and stronger. No wonder the others are opposed!!!
