In a famous 2007 experiment, violin virtuoso Joshua Bell tried his hand at busking in a plaza of the D.C. metro, playing anonymously for nearly an hour on his priceless 1713 Stradivarius violin, a talent for which he is often paid $1,000 a minute. In the end, only seven out of a thousand passersby stopped to listen. He collected $32.17. When he finished playing each piece, there was no response from the passing crowd. But, as Washington Post writer Gene Weingarten noted, “Every single time a child walked past, he or she tried to stop and watch. And every single time, a parent scooted the kid away.”
I think it's because music isn't something special anymore because everyone has instant access to almost every song ever made in their pocket at all times. Same with books and movies, art isn't special anymore but a mass produced product to be sold or traded.
Jeff Liggett The only problem with this theory is the fact that art has always been this, most of not all classic art pieces by Van Gogh, Leonardo and others were commissioned by the wealthy or used as a way to get noticed by the wealthy so you could be commissioned.Classical music pieces fall into the same category as most were commissioned by the rich for parties and such events. The commercialization of art isn't a factor of our times but of what art is already, a source of entertainment or an object to show status. We consider the Sistine Chapel classic and meaningful art but it was commissioned by the church to provide bragging rights and make the chapel prettier.
Here's an interesting game for you. Look around your immediate surroundings and pick out a man-made object that you own. Try to pick something that you never notice or that you don't know how it came to be yours. Something innocuous, like a pencil, a towel, a fingernail clipper, etc. Now try to learn everything you can about this object, where it was made, who designed it, where the materials were sourced from, how it works, everything. There's a certain irony there, I think, when it comes to me wanting to thank you, John, for creating this beautifully put together piece of explaining, showing a new word you have coined, and I somehow can't decide which of the words that have existed for hundreds of years to choose for that. Anyways: I can imagine you read this very often as comments to your work, but since I've never thanked you for creating videos such as this one, I thought I might just as well do it right now. Your videos mean and meant a lot to me. I've watched some like "Nodus Tollens" many, many times, because somehow, it made me more comfortable with my situation when I went through a rough patch. Also, your work inspired me, not only as a writer, but also as a filmmaker. "Silience" especially spoke to me as someone, who knows people creating art themselves and as someone, who creates as well. Without an audience, without feedback, it can be hard to go on, but if you never give up, you might be lucky enough to gather people around you who not only appreciate the work you create, but are also not afraid to criticize in a constructive manner - I had to learn that throughout the years. Take as much time as you need for creating your next video here on RUclips. Can be months, can be years, to me, it doesn't matter. Because as soon as I watch a new creation of yours, it doesn't really feel like there was a pause in between, but it is rather like listening to an old acquainted voice talking about an aspect of life that somehow concerns us all, because we might have all experienced it - or will, for that matter.
I think in general, art should be pursued for its own sake as a personal matter rather than always for others. It's not a bad thing to want an audience, but by doing art for art yourself, it creates intrinsic motivation, which can make the creative process a lot easier and avoids the ego that might come from being dependent on a supportive fanbase. One also should not be delusional in the size of their audience.
Elandir Productions so beautiful. I also loved Nodes Tollens too or in fact most of the videos. Such a lovely comment and such a beautiful video. I am almost reminded of a line - "I guess I could be pretty pissed off with what happened to me , but it's hard to stay mad when there's so much beauty in the world."
To any artist, worthy of the name, all in nature is beautiful, because his eyes, fearlessly accepting all exterior truth, read there, as in an open book, all the inner truth.
"It's only after someone points it out, do you finally catch the tune." Thank you for being that person, the one who opens our to see the beauty that was in front of us all the time.
Can’t believe it’s been over a year since the last upload, the topics addressed on this channel are amazing. Hopefully the uploads can be more consistent cos I really enjoy the content.
This makes me so happy, and full of anticipation! Your beautiful short films are actually the only thing on the internet I keep sharing systematically, even with family, friends and other people who possibly couldn't care less for this content. I have such a great desire to let other people feel the same strong emotions I feel when watching your clips. And man o man, what a disappointment I feel when they just say it's "a good clip" without much emotion. Guess that's on me though, haha! Anyway, great news! Thanks!
This could also be virtual, not always out on the streets. The countless people who write, draw, paint, blog or create RUclips channels... Perhaps it's luck to get noticed online and become viral. In any case, I am not indifferent to you and your art, thank you for returning!
I discovered this channel a few months ago. Literally saw all the videos in the same day. Definitely could relate to most of the feelings exposed here. Which made me feel at home. A place with people that felt and thought about the things that as much I looked around me, would never find someone thinking the same. Or didn’t even have a name to call those feelings and would think were just weird things of mine. Other videos just opened my mind to new concepts. The audiovisual along the script are just gorgeous; and even though most of the videos have a gloomy connotation they provided me with a vague sensation of relaxation and peace. When I saw that the last upload had been done a year ago I feared you would just stop uploading more videos. But for whatever reason it was, I understood to be patient and be content with whatever happened in this channel. I’m really happy to see you’re back. Hopefully you’ll see this comment and read the words of thankfulness of somebody whose life was changed by this channel.
Out of all the buzz and chaos that goes around this website, this channel just oozes calm. It makes you wanna stop in your busy schedule, sit back, relax and listen. Just like a spa therapy, so soothing. So comforting. So beautiful. ❤ I love your channel. I find my solace here.
I count myself as someone who is really blessed to possess the awareness of silience. I always took my time to listen whenever there's a great street performer playing nearby, I always found myself to drown in the brilliance of countless nameless artist who tried their luck in countless platform on the internet, whether if it's in visual medium or auditory medium, I am blessed to be able to appreciate art, even when someone think that these art are bad, I could always find a sliver of brilliance among these amateur pieces. It pains me to realize that some of them maybe aren't destined to be the next great artist, not to find a huge wave of audience, even though maybe that's not the thing they seek for. At least I really hope that these nameless artist would find a way for themselves to scrounge even the littlest so that they could keep making these hidden wonder. Your channel, is also one of these silience wonder. Thank you for making these :)
I have DLed and watched (MANY TIMES) this entire series, shared it with friends and family and kids I work with. If there is anything better on the Net, I'd love to see it. Thank you to everyone responsible for these amazing bursts of insight and wisdom!
I'm training to be a professional dancer. One of my teachers said to me in class one day: You need to really look at people. It's the only way they feel like they have permission to really look at you. And that's why they're here, to look at, to connect with another human being. I don't know why, but that's what felt right to add to this discussion.
You're the greatest artist on RUclips. You should be extremely proud of what you've given us. Look in the mirror and take a bow and don't do it feeling awkward like somebody patting their own back. You have an almost undescribable talent for explaining the complexity of life and I hope future generations will not be denied the privilege of listening to your thoughts.
Your channel completely altered my life, and for the better. I was so worried you wouldn’t return, but I was pleasantly surprised once again. Life is so poignant and fascinating, and every day I’m at awe with the small details and the way each aspect of the world contributes to our lives. Your videos have helped me capture these feelings, name them, and uncover the hidden depths of who I am. Thank you. Thank you for returning, and thank you for this incredible video.
This reminds me of a quote I saw years ago. "The next Einstein is alive and living on Earth right now. She lives in a country nobody talks about, in a village nobody cares about. She has never read a textbook or seen the inside of a school. Every morning she makes the long trek to the market to sell firewood, and every night she makes the long trek back to feed her children. You've never heard of her... and you never will."
Hello John. Love from India. There is one word that comes to my mind when I visit this channel. When I consume your work. GRATITUDE. As a writer myself, I am absolutely in love with words. They drive me. And what you do in less than 3 minutes with words is awe inspiring. You teach me how much meaning can be created with words. There is so much truth in your words that the gravity of the final piece is just tremendous. I almost cry with every single video of yours. Thank you for existing. Thank you for your work. There is so much hope that I derive from it. From a guy in love.
I go back and rewatch these from time to time. They are so beautiful and I have no other way to put it. I hope one day you start making these again, but if not I'm sure everyone can understand. There are few creations I appreciate as dearly as these works of art.
I don't know if you know how happy I am to see another video released, ironically enough. I can't wait to order the book as soon as it's released so I can spread the new wonderful words you've added into my life.
You have lot of sensibility. I almost turned to cry. But, in the same time, it's make me happy. It's make me happy because give me some animous to continue to persist in my objectives! Thank you soo much, mr John Koenig.
Thank you for creating one of my favorite things in the world. I can't explain what this piece means to me. I've watched it so many times. As the years went on I have often felt that maybe it's better to be indifferent. But in indifference there are no possibilities. If you don't put yourself out there and flicker with all your might how will the right person know it's you they've been looking for? They might just pass you by. And maybe you'll never find them. And maybe it'll never happen to you. But it might just. Because a miracle can happen just like that!
Your channel ages like wine, Friend. It seems every passing year I find more meaning in this work of yours, be it a fresh perspective on an old word, or finally grasping the feeling behind one I missed. Either way, it's beautiful how timeless they are... vague but specific, these words resonate something very personal within the viewer... Subjectively meaningful, Objectively brilliant, thank you so much for sharing this with the world.
"indifference is easy; it takes a lot of courage to fight back against it. so maybe we should stop and count ourselves lucky that there's still someone out there fighting the good fight"... holy shit man
Every time I watch your videos, I have goosebumps...these are things I think of daily, but cant put them into words. You do that so perfectly, I love your channel. As much as I want to say "don't stop uploading these videos", it is going to happen one day, inevitably, you wont upload anymore. I would definitely get your book, to always remember all these, as I journey through life. But for the mean time, I will always wait for that notification to pop up and tell me of a new video, till the day it stops. I appreciate everyone of your videos. Thanks John.
This channel is the art that people are missing. Seeing a video of yours again after so much time has made my day. Your thoughts are so beautiful and I'm so glad that you share them.
Fantastic. I’ve missed these videos. This one really resonates with me. Whenever I’m walking down a city’s major shopping precinct and there’s an artist or musician performing something wonderful, I have to stop and marvel.... But then I’m distracted by the passers by that pay zero attention. Have so few people time in their lives to stop and recognise talent? If only for a moment? Indifference seems to a scourge upon the human condition.
I just want to thank you for creating these words especially in connection with these videos... its a beautiful pain resonating in my chest when i understand how much i can relate to a word or how it would feel if i could. You put into words such fragile anxieties as well as wonders and miracles of the world and you come to appreciate them. Thank you. I am amazed how you come up with these beautiful words... but never stop. ❤❤❤
A little late on this video, but I never got it in my feed when it came out. I've never been disappointed. I re-watch all the videos every time a new one comes out, and it reminds me why I love them all again. Thank you John for your wonderful work.
God you're brilliant... As an artist I always said 19 of 20 fellow artists infuriate me that they make a living off such incompetence, and then the twentieth makes me want to quit for their sheer brilliance and the hopelessness that I could ever create something so beautiful. You are one of those twentieth artists.
Resonate with this so much! I see the world as creators and consumers. Most creators will not criticize another creator for putting out their work. Yes, some creators are better than others. But the act of creating means you're putting yourself out there for criticizing. And to keep putting out work, that's what (I feel) the video is about.
"indifference is easy" ....that line just jumped out at me. so simple. so true. so hard to resist. Thanks for this wonderful 3 min escape from a busy day :)
Thankfully I notice these moments all the time, with an almost painfully acute recognition. I hope this piece helps others to do the same. Thank you for your work.
Out of the many channels on RUclips that I like, there is a few that I really love. Your channel is one of those. I hope more videos are on their way, but take your time - art such as this should not be rushed.
Glad to have you back man. You’ve been missing from the sad scene of humanity. Thanks for doing what you’re doing and keep trying to give people permission to care. Much love, peace and more love to you. =]
When I saw the notification I was so wonderfully happy. I can't wait to see your books release and I'm so glad you're back, your videos are such a joy to watch and they always give me a melancholy peace when I view them.
was just thinking about you the other day.. i need a word for something but on second thoughts it ain't deep enough for this channel, "trying to give people permission to care" sent the chills through me!
Is this why you stopped making these videos? You videos are phenomenal. Found your channel ever since the first episode, but was reminded about it from a friend. Just like the first video I watched of yours, I still get chills and goosebumps.
My freaking goodness I idolize this dude. He has created a book composed essentially of words that don't presently exist. He's just discovered gaps in English and has posited these creations as fill-in for the spaces. Brilliant. I'm compiling a similar accumulation.
Theses words can never truly be explained in words or actions but in the emotions we carry you my friend go against these odds and explain the unexplainable you are extraordinary
I'm so glad you're back. I posted on r/etymology and you responded to my post saying that were gonna start making videos again- eventually. I'm really excited, thank you!
YES! IT'S BACK! Since ElliotExplicit introduced me to this channel, I've been in love with every video. I was kinda bummed that the last video was posted 1 year ago, though. But now it's back, thank you!
Thank you so much for posting a new video. I was showing someone " Des Vu " just last night, and I said " I really hope he continues to make new videos, I haven't seen one in a while ". You, sir, made my day!
This is by far one of my favourite entries, I read it on your site and loved it so it makes me so happy that there's finally a video to go along with it. love ya stuff man keep it up
I remember shedding quite a few tears when i saw your videos long ago, but this time its different. For so long, i was always trying to love my life, and now im trying to bring my love to life. The path ive chosen is shaky and im young and unconfident, but i will continue to go fight that good fight :)
Thank you for coming back - just about every one of your videos has brought me to tears or at least close, each word and explanation you have so thoughtfully articulated touches me right at my core, and there are so few things in this world that I can say do that.
I dont understand how these videos can be so inspirational yet so demeaning at the same time. I love it.
Hard to believe I've been following this channel since my freshman year. Everything you create is so beautiful. Thank you.
What a time be so early! I've wanted this return for as long as I remember. Rewatching the videos on a loop.
Your videos taught me how powerful and intentional edits can be. Everything I now edit professionally comes from how these videos are crafted
So glad to see new words...new art coming from you, John. You have a gift. Let your light shine.
Resonate with this so much! I see the world as creators and consumers. Most creators will not criticize another creator for putting out their work. Yes, some creators are better than others. But the act of creating means you're putting yourself out there for criticizing. And to keep putting out work, that's what (I feel) the video is about.
You seriously make RUclips a better place in the midst of these fucking wild times we live in. I'll be waiting for that book brotha, much love.
i finally found a place for my soul. The part that all we experience but don't know how to say and say to whom.
"indifference is easy" ....that line just jumped out at me. so simple. so true. so hard to resist. Thanks for this wonderful 3 min escape from a busy day :)
I truly miss these videos and wish there were more... Please come back!
I come back every couple months and hope there’s a new video. Thank you for your work, I always feel a bit happier after watching your content.
I cannot thank you enough for coming back. I really, really love your videos John. Thanks for providing us with yet another brilliant one.
Oh heavens, thank you for posting again, it means the world to so many... Thank you for your brilliant artistry
Glad you're back!
You have helped me through a few dark times. This is the best one yet! Thank You My Friend.
You are such a beautiful human being, John Koenig.
Days like today I’m glad I don’t unsubscribe from channels I follow that go cold. I hope this means you’re back, you do great work.
Thank you for being back. We missed you!
Glad to have you back man. You’ve been missing from the sad scene of humanity. Thanks for doing what you’re doing and keep trying to give people permission to care. Much love, peace and more love to you. =]
There's great people out there that will never be discovered. Just like this channel ...you' amazing and make great videos
Welcome back!!! I have fallen in love with all the videos, context, and meaningful spoken words! Just gives chill every time i rewatch a video! 👏🏽👌🏽😊😌
When I saw the notification I was so wonderfully happy. I can't wait to see your books release and I'm so glad you're back, your videos are such a joy to watch and they always give me a melancholy peace when I view them.
And just like that, he's back.
reaper333ify Ah, Usual Suspects.
Suitably modified.
was just thinking about you the other day.. i need a word for something but on second thoughts it ain't deep enough for this channel, "trying to give people permission to care" sent the chills through me!
I've kept the subscription to this channel for a long time hoping for more someday! Thank you for making more of this beautiful series!
Yesterday, I was cleaning out my 5 years old subscription list. I saw your channel and said to myself: "Ah, that was a great one... Wish it was back".
Great work, as always. I'm looking forward to your book, I'll be buying it as soon as it comes out.
Is this why you stopped making these videos?
You videos are phenomenal. Found your channel ever since the first episode, but was reminded about it from a friend. Just like the first video I watched of yours, I still get chills and goosebumps.
Welcome back :) Your videos are always so inspiring to me.
Thanks for coming back! Such beautiful work.
I'm so glad you're back!! This is my favorite channel on all of RUclips! I missed this!! 😊
Your awesome videos always give me goosebumps. Such great experiences.
Welcome back again! Hope all is well and really hope you stick around for a little longer. I really appreciate your videos!
This makes me cry every time, every 3 months, for the last year
It's funny that the moment I come back to see old videos you post a new one just after :) please never stop making these even if there is one per year
We are absolutely love your creations! Please have patrion, we will support you! Thank you for coming back! You are wonderful talent! 🌞

Thank God, you're back!!!
Thank you so much for having returned!!! Another amazing video to which I can totally relate to. THANKS!
This is by far one of my favourite entries, I read it on your site and loved it so it makes me so happy that there's finally a video to go along with it. love ya stuff man keep it up
As an artist, this make me want to cry. It’s so beautiful
Thank you for posting again! Your works are very inspiring as they are authentically captivating.
Thank you for coming back!
I absolutely love this and the entire page! Please upload more.
Amazing as always, thank you for another beautiful creation!
I’m so happy you still make these
Bro you have some of the most inspiring and original content on RUclips, thank you so much for your work.
I clicked at the speed of light. Soo glad this channel isn't yet dead
Yaaay !! So happy to see another video from you. Your channel is one of my favorites in RUclips. I hope you will keep making these amazing videos. :D
I've been waiting for this for a long time. Thanks for sharing, beautiful as always.
As someone who plays music and paints for my own enjoyment, I think this is my new favorite word.
