Do you have a video on turbolasers? I never really gave them any thought before and just thought of them as a new name for laser beams..niw that fuel is mentioned though..I am curious.
I note that the shoulder-fired missile that engaged the AT-AT produced a symmetric, smoky fireball that would indicate a thermobaric or high-explosive head, rather than the bright, standoff-flash of a shaped charge or explosively-formed penetrator more optimized to engage armor. Additionally, the strike was a very poor one, landing down the side of the cockpit at an extreme angle, as opposed to striking square against an armored plate where a penetrator warhead would work its best.
Another problem with the AT-AT is that you're putting all that weight on 4 small points of contact with the ground. Tracked vehicles have the advantage of dispersing their weight across a larger area of ground contact. This allows them to traverse mud, snow and other unstable terrain far better than AT-AT. Additionally, the less pressure on the ground, the less likely you'll set off pressure mines. So the taller AT-AT is still vulnerable to mines.
I can't help but feel a sense of deja vu, like I saw this topic covered before weeks ago, but it might have been a different channel, possibly Eckuarts ladder but I might need to double check. Even had the same exact thumbnail.
I'd argue the "walker armored tank"s all share a similar form factor, but they do not share a single platform. Sharing a platform would suggest they all have a common base frame. The term form factor can be used more loosely, referring to them all walking on legs for locomotion, similar to land animals. Ex: The Toyota Supra and BMW Z4 share the same platform, but they are not the same form factor because one is a hatchback and the other a convertible.
I hate when people say the height of the AT-AT makes it stupid for grip transport. We have people wh rappel down from helicopters in real life and they hover quite a ways above the ground. The AT-AT is just a lot more armored, and a lot more stable as it has 4 legs keeping it grounded as where a helicopter isn't quite as stable. So no, they won't just "fall to their deaths" that's quite a dumb statement to be honest. It has other flaws such as how goddamn slow it is but I think it's just fun for everyone to shit on the empire because.
Despite the AT-AT's flaws, I love its design. It's also extremely fun to play in most Star Wars video games, especially if it lets you stomp on rebels!
They basically had it with the AT-TE. Six legs, plenty of terrain capability and redundancy in case of damage to one or more legs, low center of gravity and good stability. Removing two legs and raising the body on the AT-AT made it vulnerable and instable and served absolutely no purpose and it's safe to say that those vehicles were designed that way in 70s purely for aesthetic reasons. Or has anyone ever seen an AT-AT walk with a missing leg or walk up any sort of incline?
Now I imagine like, an over-eager, inexperienced imperial/new order-officer deploying his men out of the AT-AT. The hatch opens, the men are ready, the officer is standing by the hatch ready to send his men through and shouts "Go go go!" The stormtroopers just look at him and is like "Uh sir, shouldn't we use cables to abseil safely down to the ground...?" The officer grabs the closest trooper and is like "NO! JUST GO!!" and throws him out. The rest of the stormtroopers just reluctantly jumps to their deaths out of loyalty to the empire
I think the writers of the sequel trilogy use 'siege weapons' as a pretext to put big guns everywhere : big guns on spaceships ,big guns on walkers and not to forget big guns on planets .
"Sir, we're making an armored infantry transport, what should we do?" "Make it as tall as possible, give it massive guns, but only forward facing, give it legs so it can step over things, make the cockpit separate from the rest of the body, and give it really strong armor, except for underneath" "Yes, sir! We'll call it the Bradley IFV"
Eh This joke doesn’t really work for me when the Bradley has a 360 turret, has treads, has armor only really strong enough to face a 14.5mm without being punched through and is still smaller than anything we see and won’t cause crew casualties when one of the legs are shot
Nice to see some comparisson videos done about Star Wars, but I must make two points Generation Tech: 1) For a Human-Centric group, your ignorance for imperial to metric measuring units is a heresy... Do you repent or should I call the inquisition? 2) The AT-TE was the most well-rounded desing the old LucasArt team could come up with, an almost good support walker (even with some crazy space-wizard like glass tech, a fully enclosed driving compartment and a remotly operated turret -- yes I'm looking towards an upscalled version of the AH-1Z Cobra chin mounted guns -- would make the AT-TE a true Tatical Enforcer walker). For frontline usage, something closer to the 2-M imperial rover tank or the New Republic's T-4Bs would be prefered...
The Manka actually doesn't seem half bad. It's what I would imagine as a proper walker. It's the right size, it has the proper amount of legs, it's too short to be tripped, and it isn't overkill. It also looks like something that would be safe to ride in.
The AT-TE is still my favorite war beetle, but I will admit the Megacaliber 6 is a great design from the sequel trilogy. Reminds me of the description of Elcor soldiers from Mass Effect 3.
Always struck me as stupid how something as big as an AT-AT has NO DEFENSES against someone running up under it with a bomb. All you'd need is a graple launcher, a large magnetic mine and a hidden bunker you can hide inside until the walkers get close enough that they can't see or shoot at you when you emerge. Run out, graple upto its belly, stick the mine to it and arm the chage, then rapell down and detach. The most dangerous part would just be getting away from the scene after it explodes.
What about the AT-ST or the AT-CT?? Just wondering why those weren’t mentioned. I know they didn’t have as much screen time as those mentioned, but they are still canon.

The height also makes you easier to see. There is a reason why the russians tried to build their tanks as flat as possible during the cold war and besides the big advantage of a tank is that it can move quickly from one place to another. A walker just goes as fast as the rest of the infantry giving you no further tactical options and then the opposing infantry can just carry a big canon platform with them and will easily destroy your precious walker.
@@Stego1819 if we talk about post-WWII Russian tanks, then on one hand, yes, they are smaller compared to western counterpart, but on the other - they loose some of their "stealth" by being extremely noisy and being very easy to spot when using thermal camera. They are still faster then walkers on terrain and way faster on the streets. And I only used the russians as the most extreme example. All modern tanks have a low profile compared to the original tanks because that is the most effective.
The video almost completely ignores the smaller two legged walkers or other multilegged transports and artillery. The lack of air support is what doomed some AT-ATs during the assault on Hoth but the walkers were successful in breaching the rebel defenses and bringing down the shield. Presumedly imperial airspeeders or TIEs (like the striker) could not be deployed because they could not pass through the shield like the grounded walkers.
