A. I applaud every person from abroad, who goes outside of Amsterdam - let alone all provinces! B. There must be many, many Dutch people, who hardly get around in the Netherlands, and certainly not from north to south, and east to west.
Thank you 😋 I am also a foreigner living in the Netherlands, and I also completed the 12 provinces last year, but I still have a lot I want to visit, I never thought this country would be so interesting and diverse 😊
Nice video. When you visit Drenthe again come to Emmen. It is 15 min from the German border. You can see Hunnenbedden in this area, which are ancient burial sites. On Fridays there is a market in the city centre. The Wall of Emmen (Muur van Emmen) is reachable by bicycle and is a whole 4805 cm above sea level. There is also a big zoo and fun park called Wildlands in the centre.
Seconding this! Also Borger, Drouwen, Eext, Exloo, Zuidlaren. If you feel up for spending some more time in Drenthe, cycling around.... All of these places have either Hunnebedden or gorgeous nature or both. The best way to see Emmen and surrounding areas is by bike, or have someone tour you around by car. I bet all Buncharted has to do is ask! :D (ps: Google "huifkar" and you'll find plenty of fun stuff. )
The wasp was definitely after the meat, and not the sugar. They collect meat to feed to their larvae. Btw, when you go back to Drenthe, Orvelte is worth a visit.
Assen is internationally known for the Dutch TT (motor)racing & circuit, near to the Baggelhuizerplas. The blue/white tower and the car in the Govenorspark are from the distinct "Verkeerspark" themepark where children could learn how to 'drive' and behave in traffic. The park sadly went bankrupt and a part of the park has moved to the "Duinenzathe" themepark in Appelscha.
They didn't visit the provinces, only the provincial capital cities. You can't judge on Drenthe if you haven't cycled the country side with the Hunebedden and heathen in the national parks, for example ..
They visited them all, they might not experienced all of it, and they were planning on biking with the OV-fiets. In the next year they will be visiting the rest of the 342 gemeenten especially the special gemeente in the Caribbean part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands and probably they still not experiencing everything
Congratulations with completing the Tour of The Netherlands! I saw Alex drinking the yellow Fernandes. Yes, it is very sweet. I recommend the green one. That's the best one! Fernandes is made in Suriname.
Christmas season is coming! Maybe you would like to visit a Christmas market! In Valkenburg, Limburg, you could visit one in the caves. It has a very special ambiance with nice stalls and lots interesting history
I got hungry from all the food you had in the video. Time to go to the supermarket. After visiting all 12 provinces it is time to visit the Caribbean part of Koninkrijk der Nederlanden: Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten. Aruba has average maximum temperature of 29 to 32 Celsius (84 to 89 Fahrenheit) throughout the year so very nice. October, november and december is rainseason but it rains mostly at night and morning. ❤❤❤
Wieringen and Urk are not islands anymore because they are connected to the mainland by reclaiming (or is it claiming) land, but they still feel and look like an Island. I live in Hippolytushoef (which is the former Island of Wieringen, Viking Island with it's own History). The Dutch are famous for their stampots, haring and kroketten/bitterballen (and Febo...whohoo), but after the disaster of the flood in 1953 the Netherlands deciced to fight and conquer the sea. The Dutch are especially asked to implement water management meassurements all around the world with the incredible work we have been able to do to make our own country safe (made the Zuiderzee into the Ijselmeer by creating the longest and biggest Dike at that time), it might be our biggest technical achievement. Katerina was awfull, we could have helped. For us it is a necessity to protect us against the sea. (another destination for you, the Deltawerken in Zeeland, you will see it is just amazing). You made me realize how much feats we have in such a small country...and we Dutch are pragmatic and we share the knowledge.
When it started to rain, it was the perfect opportunity to go to the Drents Museum! It's one of my favourite museums in NL, they often have interesting temporary exhibits and a nice permanent collection as well. Part of their permanent collection are several peat mummies/bog bodies - very fascinating! You also missed the statue of Bartje near the museum. He's a literary character from this region, and the books were also adapted for TV. His most famous quote is "Ik bid niet veur brune bon’n!" ("I won't say grace for common brown beans!")
I always go to Assen to visit the Drents Museum. It's not very big, but it has a lot of interesting exhibitions. There was one on Frida Kahlo last year, and I think they have one on Vincent van Gogh's time in Drenthe right now. They are currently renovating the archeology section, so you can't visit that part right now, but if you can, I would recommend it.
Congratulations Michelle and Alex. now you are "expert" on the Dutch. Nicely celebrated with Bitterballen!! On Assen.. Assen is also 1 week a year motorcycle capitol of the world. Housing the most famous of all motor races.. as that is busy , I bet you do well with explore Assen now!! real cool, greats from the river Zaan.
I hope to do a similar trip in 3 weeks. Staying also out of Zwolle for 3 nights. Hope to do Assen and Groningen in a day. Deventer and Nijmegen. Then try to see if I can do Apeldoorn and Amersfoort. Then Ill try to relax in Den Haag and Amsterdam before flying back to NJ!
last year you guys visited the Christmas market of Maastricht in Limburg. Neighbouring small town Valkenburg aan de Geul ( Valkenburg Limburg) has 2 christmas markets in Caves ( kerststad Valkenburg/ see vids on youtube). In combination with the Catacombs and Mergelrijk you can make a killer vlog that generates a lot of views and fun on your part.
Now you're experts! I do miss a Flevoland city in your journey, but I understand that is a bit of a challenge to make a good city vlog in this province. However, if you go to Almere in the right season (spring, summer or early autumn) and the right plan, you might be pleasantly surprised. Almere is "four villages in a trenchcoat" and on surface level has 3 things going for it: Parks, big brand shops and modern architecture. But there are some hidden gems, especially Almere Haven.
we did briefly stop in almere in our second van life vlog but you’re right - we will definitely be back to give almere and/or lelystad the video they deserve :)
We have the Emmer Turfjes. In Emmen. Peet was the main industry in south east Drenthe. Peet colonies were founded in the 1800. Emmen is a lot older. 900 ad .. 1100 years old. But the hunebedden megalith are 5000. I love to show you guys around when your visiting drenthe. The biking province of the Netherlands.
If you go back to Drenthe, make sure to visit the Huneberg center in Borger. It gives you the story about the prehistoric Huneberg builders. Greetzz from Delft.
i live in the hague and i saw you only go in the busy town, you should visit the 'woonwijken' once! its fantastic, with a lot of small resteraunts and buisnesses its the best place to go if youre hungry
Emmen is geen biet aan joh! Het oude park was veel leuker en veel meer een dierenpark. Bovendien kunnen ze het hoofd amper boven water houden, financieel.
I just moved with my family from Rotterdam to Brabant. From the big city to a little village. Lived in Rdam my whole life i'm 42 now. Living in the big city with kids is very bad. Its like going back in time. The way people are in our new hometown is way better so social. Just like it was when i grew up in Rdam 30 years ago.
So nice to see you 2 visited my hometown. (I was even able to see my appartment for a few seconds) Great video! (have you seen the Kloostertraat ? (a small, very old street in the city-centre, just on the right side of the museum, where it looks as if you're going back in time about 100 years ago) and also de Vaart. (canal with beautiful houses on both sides, the local theater and a so-callled 'pannekoekenschip'. (pancake restaurant on a ship)
Never knew that Assen *(the place where i love) has a donut vender🎉😂 thank you for sharing some insights and vision of Assen 🙏🎉 you were in the Gouverneurs tuin and the cars and tower were from a very old attractionparc about traffic...it was quite known in whole Drenthe to inform kids in a fun way about all that has to do with traffic, its closed since a few years and as a honor of the first parc that started in the place of Gouverneurstuin, they placed some old things there:)
If you go back to Drenthe, go to Veenhuizen. A quaint little (and this sounds weird) former prison town. Make sure you do some research on it before you go there. The prison museum is interesting too. I didn't know pay attention if they had tours in Eglish, but i expect to. Also the surroundings of it is worth it to take a walk or bike ride because it is located in nature. They made it Unesco World heritage a couple of years ago
It’s a bit of a pity that you guys came more or less unprepared to Assen. That way it might have felt a little bit like a boring provincial town. And this way you missed the highlights of our beautiful city and province. If ever you’re coming to visit Drenthe again, I’d be proud to show you guys around and tell you all about the interesting history of our town and province. ❤😊
it wasn't that we were unprepared, it's that we had to do the assen vlog that day and it ended up pouring rain all afternoon and it ruined our outdoor plans 🤷 the re-do will be happening soon though!
@@buncharted I saw your vlog today, re-visiting Assen. Super nice. Too bad I didn’t know. Because I would have liked greeting you with flags and trumpets. 😄😄🇺🇸🇳🇱🎺🎺
Now that you've survived mustard soup, you could consider to take it even further and try mustard bonbons. Available in Doesburg, one of the Hanzesteden mentioned by others.
Ah the (un)predictable weather of the Netherlands. When you go back to Drenthe, also look at the hunebeds, which are ancient burial places that Drenthe is known for. It might not help you figure out where you want to live. But it might be an interesting bit of history. I think this might be another one of those bad habits you mentioned earlier, but the ham in beenham is not pronounced like that. It's two distinct syllables, been-ham, smooshed together. It's not like the ham in Cunningham or Nottingham. Also: Gefeliciteerd met het bezoeken van onze 12 provincies!
So nice, i was born and grown up near Assen, little bit towards Groningen and went to school in Zwolle, Zwolle's center is kinda nice, but small. We always went to Groningen as youngsters, Assen was ok for buying clothes. 😁 Drenthe kniepertjes are nice local cookies, maybe you gotta try next time, if you are on a market and they sell them... And wondering if you two tried poffertjes yet (mini pancakes) with butter and powdered sugar. 😋
@@buncharted Ow cool!! Peww, i was afraid you two missed out on that one! 😸 So glad yall did had them!! Idk what i like more pancakes or poffertjes. I gotta look up that video! Great you two liked it!! So many say stroopwaffels are the Dutch thing ppl need to have, but i rather have poffertjes or dutch applepie or pancakes. 😺
My wife and I regularly go to Drenthe because of the natural beauty. Assen.....mmmwah.....what on earth am I supposed to do there? But the "Dwingelderveld", the "Drents-Friese Wold" and the "Bargerveen" are our favorite places. Yes, Assen is the capital of the province, but our hometown Hoofddorp is bigger :-)
yeah, for sure! it’s just a big trek for us to get out of the cities most of the time since we don’t have a car. we def need to visit more of drenthe, especially the nature, in the future!
@@51bikerboy I agree. I worked in Meppel at Icare for 1 year and Meppel had indeed more to offer then Assen. Meppel is actually is very nice place to visit.
not sure we’d make an entire video about it but it’s mentioned quite a bit in this one: MARKET VS GROCERY MEALS IN THE NETHERLANDS (life in the netherlands) ruclips.net/video/DVwMSJoOxOE/видео.html
I was rather surprised to learn Mexican restaurants were so rare in the West. Groningen has three in the city centre alone. It's probably because immigrants tend to land near countrymen and Groningen has quite a Latin American community for decades.
Ended it in style with a nice rain shower. Thank you Michelle and Alex for all the lovely videos so far. Up to your next targets :o). PS. Does this one have an 18+ rating in the US?
@@buncharted In that case also visit the Dwingeloo Radiotelescope. It used to be the first and largest rotatable radiotelescope in the world for professional astronomy. Now it is the largest radiotelescope in the world for amateurs. Trust me. It wiil be worth your while.
You guys have seen a lot more from the Netherlands than i have seen in my whole life. The mustard soup should be made from Dutch mustard and it probably was. How to tell the differences? Dutch mustard is made with whole mustard seeds.
Pronunciation of Beenham needs a slight adjustment: Been and ham are separate entities and though it is one word the H is pronounced. In essence the H is slightly harsher exhale of your breath. Have a Dutch person to show it, oh, different areas, different accents... even with something as ham. 😊
You must have missed it but there are lost of Mexican restaurants in Rotterdam as well, and also Dordrecht has some. So it's not just the north. And Assen is most famous for the yearly TT motorcycle race wich is part of the MotoGP World championship.
Hey, you've come a long way from disliking "mosterd" to having bitterballen (or a kroket, can't remember) with mosterd, and now even mosterd soep! Way to go. BTW, that was definitely a WESP terrorizing Michelle and not a bee. I think you've now been to more cities in the Netherlands than me, and I've been living here now for almost 40 years, lol.
I life in the south been nearly on all the cities of the netherlands. Only to go for me is provence limburg zeeland drenthe overijsel. Dutch cities have a lot of musea grachten city poorts and beautiful history. I eat only halal so I cant taste everything of dutch cousine. But I did have learn much of your video’s and also enjoy it. Day before yesterday I have been in Groningen. And 2 days before in Leeuwarden.
Now that you've visited all 12 provinces and eaten many of their regional food specialties, I would like to know what food(s) is your favorite. It obviously doesn't have to be anything fancy or specific to any particular region. Just asking because you've sampled so many foods common to the Netherlands. Full disclosure: some of the foods I still miss after having lived away from Nederland for over 60 years: stampot met rookworst, saucijzenbroodjes, kroketten out of the wall at Febo, spekkoek, sate met pindasaus and nasi goreng.
it would be such a long list... broodje rendang frites met stoofvlees broodje frikandel speciaal pretty much anything from a surinamese restaurant spekkoek broodje beenham snert kibbeling and these are just off of the top of our heads 😅
How do you like life without air-conditioning and just having a comfortable temperature to sleep in, with exceptions such as very hot days that sometimes occur
"In this episode, Michelle and Alex visit their 12th province in the Netherlands (the European part, anyway)" The islands you are referring to right now, known as the BES-Eilanden are not actually provincies (Provinces) But are called bijzondere gemeenten. (Special municipalities) Just for you info ;)
@@bunchartedmusea in the Netherlands are not always dusty old curiosity cabinets. There are many very interactive musea that are more than worth a visit. Especially open air kind of musea, like the national open air museum in Arnhem or Archeon in Alphen aan de Rijn. Some are almost like theme parks like the Spoorwegmuseum in Utrecht. You might want to give it a chance sometimes.
Drenthe is always last. In anyone's thoughts in our country. Groningen a close second. You really have not "seen" Drenthe. Assen may be Drenthe's capital, but it's not really, ...drenths. It's way more provincial than rural. I hope you're gonna find a little bit more rural, and the smaller villages like Eext and Zuidlaren.
we basically say this in the video - and that we have to go back to really visit drenthe sometime. we don’t have a car and rely on trains and buses, so “rural” presents an interesting challenge for us!
if I had a car I'd tour you around myself. (no license either, unfortunately) But I'll look forward to you guys exploring more of this province at a later time :D@@buncharted

Also: Gefeliciteerd met het bezoeken van onze 12 provincies!
I like you guys so much😊
So nice, i was born and grown up near Assen, little bit towards Groningen and went to school in Zwolle, Zwolle's center is kinda nice, but small. 😋
oh we’ve had a LOT of poffertjes 😄 we love them!
(we eat them in our “dutch food” video and in our maastricht christmas market video!)
0:12 the city of Austin? Are you sure? 😅
honestly i could go for some in-n-out right now
My wife and I regularly go to Drenthe because of the natural beauty.
You should try Meppel.
Exploring the foreign will show you why!
@@51bikerboy I agree. I worked in Meppel at Icare for 1 year and Meppel had indeed more to offer then Assen. Meppel is actually is very nice place to visit.
The smaller villages in Drenthe are also very pretty, Odoorn or Borger for example.
Are you guys going to alkmaar some day?
100% yes! we were just talking about it actually
On october 8 iets alkmaars freedome day so maby thas intresting for you 😋
come to hoogeveen
Just an observation..... do you have an video regarding the (white) asperagus????
not sure we’d make an entire video about it but it’s mentioned quite a bit in this one:
MARKET VS GROCERY MEALS IN THE NETHERLANDS (life in the netherlands)
ruclips.net/video/DVwMSJoOxOE/видео.html
Very cool, enjoy🤙👍😎☕️🌷🚣🌻🍻🥐
I was rather surprised to learn Mexican restaurants were so rare in the West. Groningen has three in the city centre alone. It's probably because immigrants tend to land near countrymen and Groningen has quite a Latin American community for decades.
In Assen is ook wel degelijk een Mexicaans restaurant .Bramigo heet dat restaurant.
Ended it in style with a nice rain shower. Thank you Michelle and Alex for all the lovely videos so far. Up to your next targets :o).
PS. Does this one have an 18+ rating in the US?
i hope not - it’s tamer than a PG-13 movie in the US 🥲
I know Hoogeveen Station since the 60'ies. Alas modern time haven;t done it good.
You should have visited Dwiingeloo too.
we still have a lot of places to see 👀
@@buncharted
In that case also visit the Dwingeloo Radiotelescope. It used to be the first and largest rotatable radiotelescope in the world for professional astronomy.
Now it is the largest radiotelescope in the world for amateurs.
Trust me. It wiil be worth your while.
Michelle, broodje beenham, it is a sort of ham, so been-ham, en ham is with a clear A, like the A van Assen.❤️Hil
Next time your visit Drenthe go too Borger en go to deugniet . The best pancake of all of the world!!!!
You guys have seen a lot more from the Netherlands than i have seen in my whole life.
The mustard soup should be made from Dutch mustard and it probably was.
How to tell the differences?
Dutch mustard is made with whole mustard seeds.
a sugestion? follow some Hanzesteden, they are old city's growing big by trade. allong the river IJssel 🙂
Oh shit. You are in Assen. oh no I missed you😢 I live there😢😊
👋 😄
Maybe you can visit Denekamp in Overijssel.
Kingsday is 2024 in Emmen. I hope you will come too.
Michelle, you've got to learn to stand up for yourself when avoiding spiders! 😂 Enjoyed seeing Assen with you.
No sit down would you’ve watched this to the end without the where are you headed to reference/ cliffhanger?
Pronunciation of Beenham needs a slight adjustment: Been and ham are separate entities and though it is one word the H is pronounced. In essence the H is slightly harsher exhale of your breath. Have a Dutch person to show it, oh, different areas, different accents... even with something as ham. 😊
You must have missed it but there are lost of Mexican restaurants in Rotterdam as well, and also Dordrecht has some. So it's not just the north. And Assen is most famous for the yearly TT motorcycle race wich is part of the MotoGP World championship.
where is the mexican restaurant in dordrecht? please don't say "taco mundo", haha
@@buncharted I see the one that was there closed in 2019
Hey, you've come a long way from disliking "mosterd" to having bitterballen (or a kroket, can't remember) with mosterd, and now even mosterd soep!
No picture of Bartje ?
So after seeing the 12 provinces it has become time to see the Dutch Caribbean and have more sunshine (or less rain)?🤔😄
i hope so!!! we might do it this winter - we’ll see! 🥰
Now that you've visited all 12 provinces and eaten many of their regional food specialties, I would like to know what food(s) is your favorite. It obviously doesn't have to be anything fancy or specific to any particular region. Just asking because you've sampled so many foods common to the Netherlands. Full disclosure: some of the foods I still miss after having lived away from Nederland for over 60 years: stampot met rookworst, saucijzenbroodjes, kroketten out of the wall at Febo, spekkoek, sate met pindasaus and nasi goreng.
it would be such a long list...
broodje rendang
frites met stoofvlees
broodje frikandel speciaal
pretty much anything from a surinamese restaurant
spekkoek
broodje beenham
snert
kibbeling
and these are just off of the top of our heads 😅
You should have skipped the 'Grand Cafe', and instead have tried the iconic 'Heideplaggen'. Just heat them up oover a cup of hot tea.
Have you guys ever tried a real Bossche Bol from Den Bosch? If not and you will one day then it opens up a new world for you loll
yes! we went in our den bosch vlog - michelle loved it! 🥰
Nothing like opening a video with a butt shot when you're in Ass-en. 😂
Heb jullie Bartje nog gezien?
waar is bartje?
OH - the statue in assen? we saw it but didn’t record it sadly 😢
De bakkelhouserplas 😂 😂
How do you like life without air-conditioning and just having a comfortable temperature to sleep in, with exceptions such as very hot days that sometimes occur
we do love the fresh air 🥰
You have to go to Sint-Maarten in the Caribean now 😂
"Get in the car". "No". "Get in the car". "okay". Next time blink three times if you need help. 😂
😂😂😂
After making it to all the 12 provinces, I think you came out with a pretty decent overall weather by Dutch standards.
agreed
I sounded like you said turfcoke 😂
"In this episode, Michelle and Alex visit their 12th province in the Netherlands (the European part, anyway)"
The islands you are referring to right now, known as the BES-Eilanden are not actually provincies (Provinces) But are called bijzondere gemeenten. (Special municipalities)
Just for you info ;)
even better!
😉😊
so curious about that soup now
it’s so good. honestly, the soup game overall is strong here in the netherlands. pea soup, vegetable soup, mustard soup… it’s all great!
You missed the Drents Museum, it is certainly worth a visit
we skipped it since we weren’t really art museum types but am only now realizing the history museum aspect of it - we’ll have to go back!
@@Nitzpitz we went to the spoorwegmuseum in our utrecht vlog :) we visit museums sometimes - we just don't like to vlog inside of art museums!
@@bunchartedhaven’t seen that one yet. I understand not vloging in art musea, I guess that doesn’t always feel comfortable.
Hey Michelle and Alex, I usually react in a dirty dad joke kind of way... I won't this time. Would you guys be in for a challenge? Now you have visited all provinces (congratulations! ) I have to tell you something obvious: You still have not seen everything yet! I can make a list of places nobody goes to (no videos on RUclips) and still each of that list would be a very special place with touristic potential ! It could be because of spectacular nature or because of special and unique location or because of special historical aspects. Would you be interested to start a series of unexpected adventures? What do you say? I invite you to try one and see how you like it!? Interested?
sure! can’t commit to anything but we would certainly appreciate the guidance from someone that knows better than we do :)
0:47.. nice buns!
nice job but.....actually you probably did not really visit all Dutch territory. You can for instance find the highest mountain on the Dutch Antilles.
Congratulations. Bay the way.... it is Assen not austin. I work near Assen and its a great city. I wonder..... if you guys visit all the cities, how you guys are going to do it in Friesland... they got 11 cities😂
we are definitely not pronouncing a t in assen?
0:52 : Damn!! Would you ever get out of bed? 😍
motherf%cking assen
Different hair🤔
haha neither of us have different hair for this video
michelle has informed me that her hair was in a ponytail and that may have been the first time that’s happened in a vlog so i stand corrected 😂
Wasps love meat.
Emmen is better
we’ll have to find out!
Welcome to the most boring city of the Netherlands accept one weekend end of june
haha there are almost certainly cities more boring than assen in the netherlands
Next time you should eat that cake with butter....oooooo That is so yummie😁😁😁
