    I enjoyed this video. It was very informative just cuz I’ve never heard of this band as an American. I feel like there was a lot of compassion, and detail very deeply presented. For suggestion and constructive critique, I don’t necessarily think this video should’ve been three hours. There are some extra stuff that isn’t as useful for the story like the nomination per music vid or sharing each and every place they performed live at 1by1. I’d recommend you look at people like Mic the snare, Trash Theory, Punk Rock MBA or GregCubed for inspiration
    Still, great job on this effort . I’m sure it was war for you to make this happen.

      Thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, this video took a very, very long time to make. It's actually been in the works for about 2 years (although going to university put working on it on the back burner). Part of the reason this took so damn long to make was because I wanted to be as thorough as possible and talk about pretty much EVERYTHING regarding the band and not leave any details out. But yeah, it could've been a good deal shorter if I had left out their award wins/nominations or their tour dates as you mentioned.
      Glad you liked my video! And also glad I could introduce an American to Hedley and their music! Did I interest you in checking out any of Hedley's music? Did any song clips I played here make you want to listen to them in full? How'd you find this video BTW? Did it just pop up in your recommended feed?
      Also, if you want even more, go watch the full interview I did with Chris Crippin, the ex-drummer! Link's in the description and the card!

      I actually told Christian to mimic Jacob Hoggard's voice. I gave him an interview Hedley did in 2015, and told him "try to sound like this guy".

  • @NoParkingBerry
    @NoParkingBerry 18 дней назад +1

    It's easy to interpret this video as the magnum opus of your RUclips channel, and I don't know if anyone else can top your Hedley documentary given how comprehensive it is, right down to the surprise appearance from Chris Crippin (BTW, his firing occuring in 2016 before it was publicly reported in 2017 reminds me of the same thing that happened with Steve Whitmire from The Muppets). I was never a huge fan of Hedley myself, but I would enjoy listening to a couple of songs whenever they came on the radio or MuchMusic, namely "Anything" and "Crazy for You". Too bad one of those songs, "Anything", isn't one of your favorites. Then again, I'm not always good at identifying the hidden meanings of songs and the messages they could be sending, so that explains why I casually enjoyed "Anything" without thinking about its potentially bad message. As always, you do a great job with analyzing all of the songs.
    After hearing that Jacob Hoggard's apology is yet another one of those public apologies from celebrities, influencers, and other types of entertainment people, that the fans and victims rejected, it inspired me to suggest that you should make a video essay questioning if public apologies are useless. I've heard so many examples of apologies (whether they're the ones from John K., Dan Schneider, Drew Barrymore, or most infamously Colleen Ballinger) that are seen by people as insincere, or "Oh, you're only saying sorry because your hand was caught in the cookie jar!" How many examples are there where people can universally forgive a public figure for their wrong actions? Hope you take my idea into consideration, Norbert.
    Also, I just gotta say this about Hedley's "Try This at Home" DVD. "Try This at Home"? More like "MTV's Jackass at Home", am I right? Also also, I feel bad for that Homer Simpson doll getting violated. I mean, I get "The Simpsons" went through seasonal rot, but no need to take it out on Homer like that, dude.
    Also also also, I loved that gag with Russell from "King" at 10:30!

    • @NorbertSD
      @NorbertSD  18 дней назад +2

      Thanks DJ. Really glad you enjoyed the video, and helped to get it to almost 2,000 views right now.
      I had a feeling you'd like that little joke with Russell from King saying "Hey! Give me back my crown!" to Kalan Porter. I like including references to past videos of mine. Was that your favorite part of the video? Did you have a different favorite part? Did you learn any interesting facts from this video? Did this video unlock any memories of Hedley songs for you (like, you heard a Hedley song played in this video and thought, "Oh, I didn't know that was a Hedley song!" or "Oh, I remember that song from years ago!")? Was it interesting to hear Christian Frates', MoBrosStudios', ThatMediaGuy's or GokaiOrange's narration in this video or see Simon/BabyLambCreations playing the song "Perfect" on piano during the credits at the very end? Were you surprised to see that I got to interview Hedley's ex-drummer for the video and have him read over my script to make sure everything I said was accurate?
      Doing a video about the sincerity, or lack thereof, of celebrity/public figure apologies is an interesting idea. I'm not really sure I'll do a video like that since I'm not exactly sure that's something I'm best equipped to talk about. But yeah, it seems most celebrity/public figure apologies (like Jacob Hoggard's) are met with "You're only sorry you got caught!" responses. Although apologizing for what they did is certainly better than ignoring the backlash altogether, and many people do believe that staying silent is an admission of guilt. So, do you say nothing and get backlash for being silent, or apologize and face "You're only sorry you got caught!" accusations? It's really a no-win scenario either way. Also, can an apology, even if it is seen as a "sorry I got caught" one, even be sincere? You think Dodie Bishop genuinely felt sorry or regretful after she realized Ginger was listening on the phone call at the end of "Wicked Game"? BTW, I'd be interested in reading John K's apology. If you can find it, can you send it to me, maybe in a Twitter DM?
      BTW, if you still want more, feel free to check out the full interview with Chris Crippin. Again, link to it is in the description and card of the video. Crippin shared with me a lot of juicy information, not just in the interview, but also in the first Zoom call we did prior to the actual interview. BTW, Crippin also seemed to be defending some of the Try This at Home DVD antics in it. And also feel free to check out Crippin's solo music if you want to support his post-Hedley career (again, his debut solo album #MeTooDriveBy came out this year).
      Thanks again for watching DJ and leaving your comment.

      @@NorbertSD Like I mentioned in the live chat, I thought it was an interesting bit of trivia to know that The Weeknd had to change his name slightly because another Canadian artist had first dibs on "The Weekend".
      It was also interesting to learn that you're not a fan of live recordings of songs. Maybe it's because one jazz song I'm currently addicted to at the moment, "BLACCK" by Jon Batiste, happens to be a live recording single. But I get why you don't care for them.
      I thought Christian and Simon A. did a great job with their respective contributions to your documentary. And yes, I was surprised by Chris Crippin's appearance in your doc. I'll admit, I was overthinking who could possibly be your secret guest, with some of my guesses being irrelevant to the main subject of your video. At one point I was like, "Did Norbert get in contact with Carlos from YTV's The Zone?"
      Also, it's okay if you can't make a video essay on sincere vs. insincere apologies from celebrities. I think your response to my idea is satisfying as it is.
      Lastly, if you ask me, I think Dodie was about as sincerely sorry as Arthur was when he wrote that infamous apology letter to Sue Ellen. I dunno. Even in my ancient review of "Wicked Game", I remarked that Dodie was "faking guilt" when she was caught in the middle of the "ambush".

    As a Hedley fan, my personal favourite album is definitely also Storms. The orchestral sound and piano of the songs with Jake's voice is just the best thing I've ever heard. My favourite song specifically has changed numerous times but I would probably say Heaven's Gonna Wait. On the other hand Lost in Translation has to be my least favourite for sure 😂 with the first album probably being my least favourite album. (The Gunnin' slander hurts a little bit but understandable 😂)
    Although I first heard Hedley on the radio with hits like Perfect, Anything, Crazy for You, and Better Days (I never really heard the older ones on the radio since I was really young by the point those would've been on), I didn't have Spotify until 2018 anyway, but once I discovered the rest of the music, plus realizing that they made all these songs, they easily became my favourite. So I guess I discovered them in their pop era but I love their pop-punk era just as much.
    Very relieving to know that not only are there others like you still listening to Hedley, but that Crippin himself isn't against it!
    Amazing video man, insane dedication to make this! 100% worth the time watching, learned many new things and even (re)discovered a song I forgot about (Lucky)!

    How about do a video on Marianas Trench? They're another Canadian pop punk band from the Vancouver area, but are also probably one of the best rock bands of all time, and no that is not an exaggeration. Josh Ramsay has a great voice, one of the best in modern rock, and he produces, writes, and performs all of his own material. He is like the Brad Bird of music, in which he doesn't just see rock music as party music, or doom and gloom grunge, but rather as an art form. And unlike Hedley, who watered themselves down in pop-punk to a disposable, filler radio band like Maroon 5, these guys kept experimenting with their guitars and created some of the best albums of all time. And once again, the songs are that good and that versatile, considering they could be compared to several 70s arena rock epics, like Bohemian Rhapsody, Stairway to Heaven, and Shine on You Crazy Diamond. Plus, this band has had the same lineup since their formation in 1999 and some of the best music videos in the world.

    • @NorbertSD
      @NorbertSD  25 дней назад

      Marianas Trench definitely have made some fantastic songs, and I definitely think their best songs are better than Hedley's best songs, but I really don't feel like doing a video like this Hedley one on Marianas Trench due to how long it took to research, write and edit. This video was a one-time special occasion. But yeah, Marianas Trench, like Hedley, also fall into the category of "bands that were super popular in Canada but almost no one outside of Canada have ever heard of them".
      I did discuss one of Marianas Trench's songs in the "My Favourite Canadian Songs (that Americans have never heard)" video, so go check that video out. Maybe in the future I'll consider doing a review of one of their albums, but that'll be it.
      Thanks for your comment. Hope you liked my Hedley video. And go check out the full interview I did with Chris Crippin (link's in the description and card) if you want even more!

    I find it very disappointing that Jacob would do such acts. I used to look up to him and think his songs were good. I slowly forgot about the band sometime around 2016 and barely heard anything of them since. It was only about a year ago when I randomly thought of them and searched them up to find out what Jake did. Now I heard in the news recently that his sentencing is beginning. The future for this band isn't looking too great. I also feel bad for the other band members who are associated with Jacob, especially Chris who was fired (probably because he was calling Jaccob out for his actions tbh but I'm not certain).

    • @NorbertSD
      @NorbertSD  3 дня назад +1

      Yeah, Jacob has officially begun serving his time in prison. And yes, it's a shame that someone so talented had to throw it all away by committing such heinous acts. However, that doesn't mean you can't enjoy Hedley's music anymore. I'm a firm believer in "separate art from the artist".
      Also, yeah, Chris has had difficulty getting his post-Hedley music career off the ground due to his association with Hedley, as I mentioned in this video and as Chris also mentioned in the interview he did with me for this video (BTW, go check out the full interview if you haven't; link's in the description and card of the video). Feel free to check out any of Crippin's solo music if you want to support his solo career. Like I said in the video, his debut solo album #MeTooDriveBy came out this year. Go give it a listen if you're interested.
      Even though Hedley will probably never make any new music again, their music does still live on in the hearts of their fans. In fact, Chris mentioned in the interview (I played a clip of him saying this toward the end of the video) that his friend wants to do a Hedley cover/tribute band and has a gig for Chris ready. Well, after this video came out, it's now officially become a thing. Look up "headley_online" on Instagram if you're interested. They hit the stage in 2025. So it looks like the story of Hedley isn't quite over yet. Maybe I'll do another video in the future talking about the tribute band once they release some cover songs.
      Thanks for watching. Again, go watch the full interview with Chris Crippin (link's in the description or the card) if you're interested, and feel free to check out Crippin's solo music or anticipate the release of music from the Hedley tribute band next year if you want as well.

    Its not an allegation anymore once youre convicted. The supreme court threw his appeal out a few days ago. He IS a sexual predator and he reported to jail on Friday.

    • @NorbertSD
      @NorbertSD  24 дня назад

      Wait, did Jacob actually begin his prison sentence on Friday? Do you have any proof or a source for that?
      Also, yes, I am aware that once you're convicted, it's not an "allegation" anymore; it's a "conviction". However, I still mostly used the word "allegation" in chapter 10 because I was talking about the events in roughly chronological order, and for the most part, I was at the time before Jacob was officially found guilty. When the anonymous Ottawa woman first came out with her story in 2018, it was just an allegation. Only in 2022 when Jacob was found guilty of raping her did it officially become a "conviction".
      Also, unless there's any info I missed or updates that have come out since I uploaded this, Jacob was only found guilty of one charge against him--raping the Ottawa woman. He was acquitted of the 2 other charges against him, I couldn't find any info about the Kirkland Lake allegation post-2022, and none of his other allegations have gone to court. Again, unless there's any info I missed or updates that have come out since, all of his other allegations are still "allegations" and won't become "convictions" until a court finds him guilty of them, like how they found him guilty of raping the Ottawa woman.

    • @NorbertSD

      Update: I found a CBC News article about his appeal being thrown out and him beginning his sentence. I've updated the description with this new information.
