What do Creationists Believe about Human Evolution? | Dr. Eugenie Scott

  • Creationists persistently deny the possibility that our species has had an evolutionary history, in spite of the overwhelming evidence. Dr. Eugenie C. Scott, Executive Director of the National Center for Science Education, will argue that understanding the creationist treatment of human evolution requires an understanding of theological doctrine. This includes the idea that humans and other ""kinds"" be separate creations, hence all the fossils are either ""true humans"" or ""just apes."" How should we address the fact that some fossils show both ""primitive"" and ""advanced"" features, rather than this dichotomos divide?
“What do Creationists Believe About Human Evolution” was presented at American Museum of Natural History on 5/17/2007 as part of The Leakey Foundation’s Speaker Series on Human Origins in partnership with the New York Consortium in Evolutionary Anthropology.

I have a half-brother who brought his family up as creationists. At the age of twenty or so, one of his children told me he was 'very interested in evolution'. But when I asked him about it, it turned out that he knew next to nothing about evolution, as this had been a taboo subject during his upbringing. All he meant was that he was curious about whether there might be something in it. So all this flood of information and fact is certainly a good idea, but the main problem is not scientific: it is the psychological and cultural one of undoing the indoctrination of children.

It comes down to how does everything appear in this reality and what sustains it? All matter, the atoms and the space between them is 98% space 2% solid approximately. What maintains the difference of gravity inward and the expansion outward giving volume to all matter. There is something pushing back against gravity. There is something keeping everything in equilibrium. Then simple atoms become all the elements and then there is organic life and it is all strung together on virtually nothing.
Personal experience and then reading scriptures, it is God who instantly manifests everything seen. We all live and move and have our being in God.
We were not meant to be biological creatures called Human but the mind developed errors. Man has taken the wrong violent path which is observable and this will lead to extinction.
Man can be immortal and it is all in the mind.

I went to a Christian private school in Australia in the 90's. It was hilarious in biology and earth science classes because the syllabus was set by the state, so we had to learn the genuine science out of text books. Then afterwards we would be given a little pamphlet with some alternative theories and were told that the science was wrong and we should believe the pamphlets, even though they contained theories that were so obviously disproved by what we'd just learnt in class.

And that is the reason why I hate creationists and their ilk with a passion. While I am not a buddhist myself I always sympathized with Buddhism's sensitivity to suffering being central to all existence. Life can be a real shit show. Its one redeeming aspect is the fact that our world is intelligible. To our great delight we can comprehend life and universe. Having creationists and those believing in "revealed" religion actively fighting the knowledge we acquired, diminishing the scope of what we know and understand is positively evil. Stopping (at least trying to stop) mankind to engage in its most noble task: the comprehension of the world.

@@omnivorous65 I totally agree. My creationist teacher's blatant attempts to discredit, or prevent access to the forbidden knowledge had the entirely opposite affect than they were hoping for. I ended up craving more information about these subjects which led me to a university education and career in genetics, and an amatuer passion for anthropology. It's no coincidence that the belief in religion is inversely proportional to an individual's or population's level of education.

Kitty Cat girl... it is evolutionists who abuse the word "theory." Because of a lack of understanding, they think that because evolution has the word "theory" attached to it somehow that makes it "science" and therefore true.
A theory is just a conjecture that attempts to explain a natural phenomena. A theory is only as good as the evidence that supports it. By your standards I suppose the theory that "the earth is flat" is true because it has the word theory attached to it. NONESENCE!

It's not pushed by our federal government. Rather, the Creationists, back in the seventies, sued the public schools for "equal time" for the presentation of their "theory," which is just Christian mythology dressed up as "science." This took root in several places and not in others, so there has been an uneven teaching of science as a result.

Eg things aren’t totally random, there is an underlying meaning/logic/intention to the natural world. If you tally them up that’s probably the most common position for people to have, even among those who nominally believe in evolution and who would never describe themselves as Christian, let alone fundamentalist Christian.

@@IIrandhandleII Go back in history and look at what the experts have said. They have been wrong over and over. We have that going on today with Covid. And either Darwinian evolution is true or it's not true. I am only interested in if it's true or not true. There is no evidence that Darwinian evolution occurred. That is why it is still argued.
You can do computer simulations of many things to prove them right or wrong. There has been no successful computer simulations of Darwinian evolution. That should tell you a lot.
When it comes to science when they can do repeatable experiments over and over anywhere in the world and the same thing happens then you know it's true.
We think, we believe, the evidence points to, etc are not proof. You hear these terms all the time in "science".
And this use of studies to say something is valid has limitations. Studies can't be repeated like experiments. You can do another study but you can and many times do wind up with dueling studies. And having looked at lots of studies over the years I can tell you I can make a study that will come out any way I want it to come out. And this is often what happens when people are trying to get funding.
I will give you a very good example of how the experts are misleading(to put it mildly) the public on mental health issues. And will make my point about the experts being wrong about things they insist they want you to live your life by.
The story of Narcissus is a myth. Narcissus never existed. The story of Narcissus is not a case study. Narcissus is the child of the river god Chephissus and the nymph Liriope. So you and these experts have a condition based on fantasy. If you want to take this to its logical conclusion, the so called experts can take any Greek myth detailing human foibles and turn it into a mental illness. Now that is crazy. The story of Narcissus has nothing to do with mental illness. The use of the Greek myth Narcissus to make up this so called mental illness is a dangerous precedent. Of course I know you are not familiar with the story of Narcissus or you would know how ridiculous it is to try to make a mental illness out of it.
I have written a book detailing this issue as well as the use of Oedipus Rex for the so called Oedipus Complex. Freud used four lines from Oedipus Rex to claim every male, every male desires to have sex with his mother. And it says “many a man” not most men much less all men. And where are the other examples in literature to prove this? There are none. If this was a universal condition it would be a theme in literary history that would be seen over and over again. And it’s not. I was a literature major and have studied these particular conditions based on literature.
And let me give you another one. The earliest known story of multiple personality in literary history is the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. There is nothing prior, not in Shakespeare, the Greeks, the Romans, the Bible, nor personal journals. However you will find every other kind of illness in the literature from history. And the word dissociative they use to now label multiple personality is not a psychological term but a science fiction concept as the word dissociative comes from the science fiction novella Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to explain the separation of the minds of Jekyll and Hyde. "How, then, were they dissociated?", is the direct quote. Somebody in the field of psychology got this term from a science fiction novella and sold it to the public as a psychological term. They are laughing at all of us, these so called experts. Multiple personality is a hysterical condition which you can see people exhibit if you go see a stage hypnotist. Every single case of multiple personality was "found" thru hypnosis. And I give a number of ways to show multiple personality is made up in my book. Its really not that hard but i spent two years researching all these matters. Narcissism, the Oedipus Complex and multiple personality are all bogus conditions. Its total crap. And my book is being repressed in the U.S. because i prove all these conditions are bogus. And these people treating people for any of these conditions would be liable for monetary damages. If you have a mental illness that is not a real mental illness you can treat someone forever since you can't cure someone of an illness they do not have, but you can convince people they have illnesses they don't have. This is why there must be objective tests as in medical science. Psychology is a social science not a medical science. You just can't claim someone has cancer or diabetes because I say so. But in the social science of psychology they can simply claim someone has a mental illness with no objective test whatsoever.

What Paley had, in fact, done was to provide a catalogue of adaptations that was shortly to come in very useful, and this is why it has been necessary to allot to Paley, as to Malthus, more space than would be justified by the intrinsic merits of their special pleading, masquerading as science. Furthermore, Paley's works, which were prescribed reading in British universities for many years, represent the prevailing points of view and attitudes of mind that had to be overcome by hard scientific evidence before the theory of evolution could be established, and, by an astonishing irony of history, his and Malthus' works unwittingly contributed more than any other publications to the establishment of that theory. Also DNA shows the people were most likely not British, they were from the Spanish peninsula. That is evidence. However, there is no evidence of any separate intelligence involved in the evolution of life, except by assumption. Also, there is not any evidence that there is a separate intelligence or supernatural being, except in the stories written in religious texts throughout history. If that's all that is needed is some text then all Gods are real, including Zeus, Odin and characters like Yoda. The one you think is real, is more of a matter of time and location of birth and the religious culture of that time and location. Belief is random.
Science give us a path of real evidence to study. For example the Covid-19 virus evolves completely from a random mutation during RNA replication. Some mutations we never see because the mutation fails immediately (extinction). While others turn into the Omicron variant, because of its mutations ability to quickly replicate and infect new hosts (evolution). This is happening over just a few months and a virus is not really alive, its just biological, organic molecules that exist through random mutation of host cells.

The bible actually says it has been written with a method to hide the truth. When the high minded and scholars say that they know what it all means then they are relying on their own understanding only.
The Bible is a collection of books that indicate the way of transformation, and a path must be taken. The way forward is revealed by walking the path and as a person proceeds the direction to take is indicated. It is total belief and redirecting the will. There is a mind renewal and consciousness change which becomes a total transformation.
It is the Holy Highway and being perfect. Love of the son is in a different nature and God will indwell, energizing an individual into freedom from their rebellious nature.
Without action there is only own understanding, but by moving forward without turning back the goal is reached. It takes about three weeks. All doubts go, it is entirely true.

Christians seem to have various interpretations. The scriptures are not understood very well and there is anecdotal messaging within the congregations.
The teaching through obedience to the Spirit is disrespected and seen as deception.
People do not want to let their old nature go and do not grasp the depth of transformation and renewing of the mind. It is treated as something superficial only as being learnt from the outside as an intellectual exercise. Really enjoyed this talk. Well-supported, balanced, and interestingly presented.
On the subject of Creationism, I find it quite sad that they believe that mankind has not improved himself since we first crawled out from caves, which totally negates the very existence of men like Albert Einstein and Nicola Tesla. That said, Creationists DO have good, scientific evidence that man actually DID live with dinosaurs, when they noticed that, *Fred Flintstone actually lived with a pet dinosaur named "Dino," in their scientifically and historically accurate television show, "The Flintstones."*
The Young Earthers also believe that the earth is really only 6,000 years old, not 9,000 years. Reason being, one year in "God's time" is actually 1,000 years, and since God created the entire world in only six days (with one day off for good behavior), this explains their six thousand year hypothesis. However, on the same subject that the earth is only 6,000 years old, may I remind them that my mother in-law is older than that.

On the other hand we know that humans have imagination and conceive of all manner of things which don't actually exist, thus supporting the latter. Quantum Physics has shown that Reality is based on Probabilities.
A statistical impossibility is defined as *_“a probability that is so low as to not be worthy of mentioning. Sometimes it is quoted as 1/10^50 although the cutoff is inherently arbitrary. Although not truly impossible the probability is low enough so as to not bear mention in a Rational, Reasonable argument."_* The probability of finding one particular atom out of all of the atoms in the universe has been estimated to be 1/10^80. The probability of a functional 150 amino acid protein chain forming by chance is 1/10^164. It has been calculated that the probability of DNA forming by chance is 1/10^119,000. The probability of random chance protein-protein linkages in a cell is 1/10^79,000,000,000. Based on just these three cellular components, it would be far more *Rational and Reasonable* to conclude that the cell was not formed by undirected random natural processes. Note: Abiogenesis Hypothesis posits that un-directed random natural processes, i.e. random chance formation, of molecules led to living organisms. Natural selection has no effect on individual atoms and molecules on the micro scale in a prebiotic environment. (*For reference, peptides/proteins can vary in size from 3 amino acid chains to 34,000 amino acid chains. Some scientists consider 300-400 amino acid protein chains to be the average size. There are 42,000,000 protein molecules in just one (1) simple cell, each protein requiring precise assembly. There are approx. 30,000,000,000,000 cells in the human body.) Furthermore, of all the physical laws and constants, just the Cosmological Constant alone is tuned to a level of 1/10^120; not to mention the fine-tuning of the Mass-Energy distribution of early universe which is 1/ 10^10^123. Therefore, in the fine-tuning argument, it would be more *Rational and Reasonable* to conclude that the multi-verse is not the correct answer while trying to determine the origin of the universe.
A "Miracle" is considered to be an event with a probability of occurrence of 1/10^6. Abiogenesis, RNA World Hypothesis, and Multiverse would all far, far, far exceed any "Miracle". Yet, these extremely *Irrational and Unreasonable* hypotheses are what many of the world’s top scientists _‘must’_ believe in and promote because of a prior commitment to a strictly arbitrary, subjective, biased, narrow, limiting, materialistic ideology / worldview.
Every idea, number, concept, thought, theory, mathematical equation, abstraction, qualia, Information, etc. existing within and expressed by anyone is "Immaterial" or "Non-material". The very idea or concept of "Materialism" is an immaterial entity and by it's own definition does not exist. Modern science seems to be stuck in archaic, subjective, biased ideologies that have inadequately attempted to define the "nature of reality" or the "reality of nature" for millenia. A Paradigm Shift in ‘Science’ is needed for humanity to advance. A major part of this Science Paradigm Shift would be the formal acknowledgment by the scientific community of the existence of "Immaterial" or "Non-material" entities as verified and confirmed by discoveries in Quantum Physics.

You've obviously boned-up on numbers, so let me make it clear that I'm impressed that you use the tools of science and math in an attempt to discredit science and math... As the lady said, even if evolution by natural selection is wrong, that does not mean that it's all just a miracle... The geocentric model of the universe, believed by the religious and used to persecute and execute heretics, has been proven wrong... Science adapts without recourse to "gosh! must be a miracle!".
Even if this universe only lasts 10^100^100 Earth years until its heat death, that's just peanuts to infinity.
