You absolutely, positively should NOT feel bad for that pun. It's pretty accurate considering this was a phone game called Coded and it was remade (or "re:coded HA HA HA JOKE!) for the DS.
the game footage that was supposed to play was just a black screen. Some people thought it was a joke on how empty the game is, but it was an editing error.
Pfft, guys, I saw this video before it was cool, this one is like a fixed version of 'Star Wars', where Lucas deleted everything he deemed a mistake. Ask Johnny for the original, it has a much deeper plot and a black screen scene, much better, trust me
The story may be pointless, but I'm glad we got this game. It was a lot of fun for me, and I feel like it controls much smoother than BbS. The command system was also a a lot better in my opinion, plus it actually tells you what you're getting when you meld commands instead of leaving you in the dark.
Biggest thing I loved from Re:coded was focusing on 1 character instead of 3, which helped me appreciate the command system more. There were even some moves they added that BBS didn't have, and they're really cool to pull off. Also, this game is very easy to break, for those who love to break their games. When filling up my stat matrix, I got so powerful that I maxed out my Strength stat and was unable to level up anymore, and I wasn't even at max level yet (think I might've been 73/76 or so). So that was fun :D
GreyouTT Not to mention how much fun it is to use Keyblades and experiment. In BbS they were stats only. Here, the lack of stats makes a Keyblade usable by the player and their preference. Hell, it's on par with 2FM in how much versatility Keyblades have in this game. I can use Kingdom Key just fine in endgame, and I can use Lady Luck or Olympia for post-game system sectors.
Late reply by a few years, but I only just played Birth by Sleep for the first time and yeah I think I'll start a riot saying this anywhere but Re:Coded is a million times better, I actually enjoyed playing Re:Coded

Fun fact: Nomura came up with the idea for this game while he was drunk. That's why the story doesn't have anything to do with anything apart from the very end.
It also just wasn’t meant to be canon initially. It was retrofitted into being canon and important for two reasons: 1. Reception to Coded in Japan was exceptionally positive, it was actually considered a bit of a landmark in mobile games having that much effort put into them. 2. KH’s story on the whole started to go through drastic changes starting winter 2009 due to Nintendo throwing money at Square to make a 3DS game. DDD was not a planned game, and it really shows in how hard the story got detailed in that game. Nomura even admitted DDD had nowhere near the planning that BBS or even the cancelled BBS Volume 2 had.
why Jiminy Cricket did not write for some worlds? Deep Jungle - afraid of being eaten by a monkey Atlantica - just try write something on paper underwater Halloween Town - scary in general for him Neverland - airsick from Sora's contant flying? Monstro - did you see the movie, Pinocchio? Jiminy was outside of Monstro the whole time
I did think re: coded had a few interesting ideas in it. The Sora you play as having an identity crisis when the key blade is destroyed because it just like him are just programs not the real thing. And the fact that one of the big bands in the arcs you go through is Sora's heartless.
I heard that Tetsuya Nomura was drunk when he wrote Coded, so I did an experiment, I got more drunk than I ever been and I don't drink much, I rewatched the cutscenes on the collections, and yes alcohol does make it better but I don't recommend it, I quit alcohol after that even though I was only drunk like 3 other times
He's probably gonna need his Censored Mode for DDD. Because For the Love of Lady Palutena, There's some bullshit in this game that's the Sole reason I've only done ONE playthrough of that game. T-T
When it comes to the big plot twist involving the Nobodies, i don't see it as bullshit. Because 358 and Roxas's growth within that game is literally a perfect example of what they stated in DDD. But yeah everything else i agree lol.
True detective. At first I was pissed off about the Organization but then I thought about it and realized what Roxas in 358 and thought "Hmm... I guess its not THAT far fetched..."
Indeed, good sirs, I actually agree with both of you. Obviously most think it was a retcon or a twist to continue the plot (which in some merits it is) but regardless you do get hints in 358/2 Days. A lot of them I believe. I swear most people complain about DDD completely or never actually gave a shit for more then 10 seconds and thought "Huh maybe there's more to this "retcon" than im given at face value, but you know the story is pretty fucked as it is so why bother?". DDD still has story "issues" but you really gotta give Nomura some sign of wow or bravo because, seriously, he's great at getting this shit down, like Unknown in kh1fm and Lingering Will in kh2fm before their respective games years in advance. I guess some are too focused on his failures then his successful story tie ins
You know, from this marathon, I'm getting the impression that Kingdom Hearts as a whole is far more guilty of re-using previous assets that Sonic or even Mario. With Sonic, at least you only get Green Hill reused. With Mario, they try harder to distinguish their "grasslands-desert-forest-jungle-ice world-fire world-boss" levels from the last ones and give them different names. But with Kingdom Hearts, it's "how would you like to keep replaying all the worlds from the first game forever and ever and ever?"
This is one of my first games in the KH series. My first thought when thinking about this game is that one ProZD video about how more gameplay mechanics =/= fun.
I had a lot of fun with this game I don't think its bad. Story is pointless but I thought it was decent for what it was and the gameplay was really fun and unique. I'm looking forward to playing it again
I actually replayed it a few weeks ago lol. My biggest problem with the game though is how slow and boring the gameplay is. This recent throwback to it is no exception. However, im not say its a bad game. Just that its the weakest in the series from my perspective.
An entire game with decent gameplay that has a nonexistant/bullshit story just to explain one tiny plot device in a previous game. Kinda reminds me of another game... HHHMMMMM! *Cough* MGSV! *Cough*
MGSV was about it's themes, it was a self contained story told throughout the entirety of it's experience, without solely depending on cutscenes. Frankly speaking, it's the most subtle and mature story in the series. The whole "Venom Snake is the first Big Boss you kill" was just Kojima feeling sorry about leaving "lore freaks" behind for most of the game and throwing them a bone.
TimeKeeper25 Don't make stupid excuses to that game its just that bullshit story for the sake of explaining one "little" plot device. As a matter of fact, the STORY in games after MGS4 are so unnecessary because MGS4 basically explains that Big Boss and Zero kinda split apart doing their own thing of what they though to be The Boss' dream.
While i agree that this game is beyond POINTLESS it is certainly NOT a game that should be ignored. Because if you didn't have knowledge of this game, how would you know of Malicifent and Pete's intentions in Kingdom Hearts 3? It seems Malicifent is looking for a "Black Box" and from her comment about "The Book Of Prophicies" in Coded she seems to be doing something on her own in KH3. (FINALLY).
Also it sounds like the gameplay isn't bad. I remember finding it pretty ok fun years ago so I wouldn't say "skip it". I think that is something to say more to bad games or games that you feel wasted your time and that you would rather not have experienced. Like the worst of the Sonic games.
you don't need to play a game to figure out that cookie cutter foreshadowing. that's what wiki's are for, and if your game's importance to a story can be summed up by a wiki, it's not a good game, or it at least is skippable, not even worth using rom hack to play it.
Not to say you HAVE to play it, Just watch the movie. And if you skipped it you wouldn't know about what Malifcifent was doing in KH3. A wiki doesn't help in this franchise. Its best if you see it with your own eyes, not through text.
the only reason I can think of to justify WHY this game exists outside of story purposes was that they just wanted KH fans to have a means of playing the KH1 on a portable device. especially since as you pointed out Coded was originally meant as mobile phone game and back in 2008 I'm pretty sure KH fans would have enjoyed being able to play KH1 without dragging their PS2 with them.
Luckily for you, V-Cast isn't canon to the series whatsoever. Also, as much as I love Kingdom Hearts 1, did we really need two retellings of it in this series? Why don't we have a retelling of Kingdom Hearts 2 for a change? ...Wait.
This is actually the first and only Kingdom Hearts game I ever played, and I enjoyed the ever-loving hell out of it, more so than Pokemon Alpha Sapphire.
One of my favorite things about re:coded was how each keyblade was unique in what it did, so there was still reason to use the Kingdom Key over others.
I think Johnny went through his own Re:Coded, having to go back and fix the bugs in his old video before re-uploading.... Kind of ironic now that I think about it
There is actually significance to the story... most notably that hearts can come into existent... you know... that retcon everybody attributes to 3D? It's in this game... you know... when Digital Sora get a real heart. it also deals with the age-old philosophical question of what happens, if you're a copy/clone of somebody else and are expected to follow their footsteps and act exactly like them, despite not being them. ALso, I really do dig the variety. Though if you had trouble following the plot of the series and its philosophy beforehand, I totally understand why all of this is WAY over your head.
Y’know...never really thought about that aspect of the plot until you said it! That is really intriguing! Stories that portray the concept of copies/clones forming their own “selves”-or in this case, digi-Sora obtaining his own heart-really fascinate me. It’s like the concept of whether an android can be considered “alive” if it develops a consciousness and emotions, which is more or less what is being explored here with digi-Sora. Anyone else want to follow up with this? I’d love to have a discussion. ^_~
One thing I find curious about a heart born from a replica is; can it be compared to a naturally born heart? or does it connect to the same source to form it's 'being'? Is it even 'real' at all? To consider an android type situation that somehow gains a type of self awareness similar to our own consciousness, - i think it would ultimately be something entirely different or 'new' to what we know as self awareness; if not because of where and how it perceives it's point of reference to the self/other (-whole).
Well Data Sora isn't a nobody though, and nobodies are defined specifically as beings without hearts, so why call them that when nobodies can get their hearts back so easily now? That's more so why people make a big deal about it in DDD's case. Makes just as little sense to me with Data Sora though.
Too be fair only the movie version really made a big deal of Data-Sora getting a heart. If i recall correctly (its been forever since Ive played it) in the DS version its just throwaway dialogue. I wouldn't be surprised if Johnny was only recording the movie for footage and wasn't actually watching it
Kingdom Hearts Re:dundant? Genius - make it happen, Square Enix. You can slot it in between 3 and 4 to explain where Goofy will have obtained his sudden Scottish accent and why King Mickey will inevitably be revealed to be a Sonic OC in a costume because he was a nobody all along, and the Hamster from Bolt was controlling Xehanort from the beginning, trying to use Kingdom Hearts to clean DeviantArt of all of that weird-ass Kingdom Hearts fan art.
You know i know recoded isn't the best game. But it still holds a special place in my heart because it was my first kh game and I loved it and I still like the game
Except the mentioning of The Book of Prophecies and how it connects to Malicifent's intentions in Kingdom Hearts 3. (But yeah, some of the best gameplay in my opinion)
happy 10th anniversary kingdom hearts re:coded!!! :3 while i find it the biggest example of how pointlessly extending the plot the handheld games can be(it can be summed up by bbs's secret ending and yeah i hate the "hurt" bull as well.) there were a few things i liked such as the different gameplay styles(especially Olympus coliseum for referencing final fantasy's gameplay even though after this game it forgot it's characters for a while outside moogles.),the roxas fight, data riku(and donald & goofy helping you, wish mickey joined too.) & the castle oblivion chapter where you encounter the other world's characters.(hope for the next saga the worlds are based on the disney animated tv series/other square enix games.)
I prefer 1.5 + 2.5, 2.8 and KH3 ports being added on the Switch. KH3 may be a lot more difficult but having all the Kingdom Hearts games on the go sounds fucking TIGHT!!!
If I had 1.5 +2.5, 2.8 and 3 on the Switch It would be the perfect console for me Okay well and a Smash Bros. Game. Maybe Freedom Planet..................... & Knuckles
Pretty much, that doesn't mean you should ignore it though. It contains very minor details that will connect BIG plot points in later games so it still is significant to the story. Watching the movie is your best bet.
Disney X Final Fantasy crossover? Cool. Action RPG with platformer elements? Cool. Huge narrative that spans across several games and consoles where everything ties into each other, but you aren't sure which is important because it could "all be a dream" where everything is about love and friendship and the baddies are dicks because they don't love enough? Yeah...no.
thank fucking god it's almost over because every game in this franchise looks identical and story is just most generic children fantasy garbage so you can imagine it's not too interesting
I suppose you could say re:coded had to be re:published!
I don't feel bad for that pun and I should
I guess you could say it was Re:Made. Got It Re:Memberized?
You absolutely, positively should NOT feel bad for that pun.

Fun fact, Nomura was drunk when he first came up with the idea for this game.
I'm pretty sure Nomura was drunk when he came up with the idea behind every game after kh2
Căcat în Ploaie Pula Mea i'm burned out on this series after the second game, don't know if i'll play the third one!
Sista Jinx Thomas second as in KHII or Chain of Memories? Or are you playing in chronological order meaning you were burnt out with KH1
One of my favorite things about re:coded was how each keyblade was unique in what it did, so there was still reason to use the Kingdom Key over others.
This was my second Kingdom hearts game believe it or not. I like it for what it tries to do.
My grandmother got it for me while we were camping back in 2011. I still remember how confused i was when i played it........
Oh ya it was. I started my kingdom heart crave with the DS titles and they are not fun trying to figure out what the fuck was going on.
Lol same. (This is coming from someone who played KH2 as their first KH title)
It was my first. And only.
this was my first intro to the series. played the game for 10 minutes then got bored
It appears we’re experiencing some sort of time loop. John’s going to reupload this video forever.
I can tell Johnny isn't enjoying Kingdom Hearts anymore lol
I think Johnny went through his own Re:Coded, having to go back and fix the bugs in his old video before re-uploading.... Kind of ironic now that I think about it
Re-upload bois
That intro music is smooth af
There is actually significance to the story... most notably that hearts can come into existent... you know... that retcon everybody attributes to 3D?
It's in this game... you know... when Digital Sora get a real heart.
it also deals with the age-old philosophical question of what happens, if you're a copy/clone of somebody else and are expected to follow their footsteps and act exactly like them, despite not being them.
ALso, I really do dig the variety.
Though if you had trouble following the plot of the series and its philosophy beforehand, I totally understand why all of this is WAY over your head.
As great as that is for this game, it means fuck all to the rest of the series.
I wouldn't be surprised if Johnny was only recording the movie for footage and wasn't actually watching it
Johnny, you are awesome. Keep making great videos!
This doesn't sound stupid enough for Kingdom Hearts.
Okay, that look at the end....

You know i know recoded isn't the best game. But it still holds a special place in my heart because it was my first kh game and I loved it and I still like the game
Re:coded's impact on the storyline: Nothing happens :D
Still a good game tho
Except the mentioning of The Book of Prophecies and how it connects to Malicifent's intentions in Kingdom Hearts 3. (But yeah, some of the best gameplay in my opinion)
Ah right, forgot about that scene, for some reason I thought she found out about it in DDD instead.
ok i believe you
*D A R K N E S S*
*BOOM*
300000 SUBSCRIBERS!! CONGRATS JOHNNY!!
*RETREADCEPTION*
This was actually my first kingdom hearts game. I remember getting it with my DS as a kid and being so confused as I played it.
A reupload?
re:upload
Hamlock great pun
I something like this while battling sniffles, an ear infection, and the fact Transformers: The Last Knight is on the TV.
this marathon is really taking a toll on johnny lol
Glad this was Re:Uploaded.
Kingdom hearts Re:coded more like “Kingdom Hearts: Reuploaded”
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Got it Re:Memberized?
happy 10th anniversary kingdom hearts re:coded!!! :3
while i find it the biggest example of how pointlessly extending the plot the handheld games can be(it can be summed up by bbs's secret ending and yeah i hate the "hurt" bull as well.) there were a few things i liked such as the different gameplay styles(especially Olympus coliseum for referencing final fantasy's gameplay even though after this game it forgot it's characters for a while outside moogles.),the roxas fight, data riku(and donald & goofy helping you, wish mickey joined too.) & the castle oblivion chapter where you encounter the other world's characters.(hope for the next saga the worlds are based on the disney animated tv series/other square enix games.)
#NewKingdomHeartsGameForSwitch
I prefer 1.5 + 2.5, 2.8 and KH3 ports being added on the Switch. KH3 may be a lot more difficult but having all the Kingdom Hearts games on the go sounds fucking TIGHT!!!
If I had 1.5 +2.5, 2.8 and 3 on the Switch It would be the perfect console for me Okay well and a Smash Bros. Game. Maybe Freedom Planet..................... & Knuckles
Hot take: Re:Coded is the most fun of all the portable KH games.
Prove me wrong.
why reupload?
Keyblader64 There was a video error in the original upload.
Did you not notice the large empty black screen in the intro where game footage was supposed to be?
Do you not realize that a lot of people didn't even watch before the re-upload?
If I was one of those people, I would probably say "ummm, okay", and get my answer from the other dozen comments asking why.
+Keyblader64 the Intro was messed up
I love the hell outta thi intro man. Song is catchy and can't get it outta my head and it very much matches what you do on the channel
So is Re:coded the only Kingdom Hearts filler game?
Pretty much, that doesn't mean you should ignore it though. It contains very minor details that will connect BIG plot points in later games so it still is significant to the story. Watching the movie is your best bet.
Yeah its a filler game basically still its an enjoyable game

His smile and optimism: gone
I don't mean to offend the fans, but even though I find the concept interesting, I think it's one of the most pretentious series of games ever created
Yeah...no.
*gasp* Did you just call my favorite series pretentious? I totally...agree.
isaacplayer42 exactly
I still love the series for what it is though, pretentious or not.
It has nothing to say but pretends that it does, I still love it though.
this took almost as long as this marathon did to come out
thank fucking god it's almost over because every game in this franchise looks identical and story is just most generic children fantasy garbage so you can imagine it's not too interesting
gurozawa I just want some good old fashioned shooter game where I kill things and be a man!!!!
gurozawa ...and you're saying this about one of the most interesting stories in existence, but hey, I guess to each their own.
ASSMUNCHER i complained abo ut the story, not gameplay, dude
gurozawa it works both ways really
Congrats Johnny!!! You passed 300,000!!!
