Wow! You lovely people, such kind thoughts and wishes, we are delighted that you enjoyed our video and want you to know how much your comments mean to us. For the past week or so, we have woken up to freezing fogs and dripping condensation inside the boat covers, so it has been a struggle getting going in the dark early mornings, your incredibly positive comments have really warmed us up and given us a much needed boost, thank you so much. Reg & Randie.
I've got a sneaking feeling you're gonna get there. Watched the previous episodes and as a hobby wooden boat restorer myself i was very impressed with your standard of work. The deck looked superb.
The Kathleen and May is my absolutely most favourite boat, she lay as a Hulk in the Torridge for years, then was saved by Mr Clarke in Bideford and completely rebuilt sadly Bideford Council wouldn't support a berth for her in the harbour so she went to Liverpool, still furious about that, love watching your videos. wonderful to see so much love and respect for Josefine, well done!
Rounding the globe all the way to Kopenhagen is a nice one. And worth it I bet. "Meandering" would be the first adjective coming to mind after that narration of two lives so far, even with lots of stable stationary times in between, apart of the bummer to have to work in different countries to simply keep the canvas You're painting Your next home on, these days. I do know about "meandering", while I kept the bachelor's state at all costs. Anyway, thanks for sharing, and all the best for You and the floating home You work on.
What a wonderful life you have lived! But there is a cost to being a free bird!I really recognized myself in the philosophy you live by!Wish you all the best!
Most interesting to hear a little of your history. Thank you for being so open. Having been invalided by Covid I watch a lot of RUclips channels and so often I want to know more of their back story. It makes it much easier to empathize if I feel we have things in common - which we do. I sincerely do hope you do get the chance to live the life you were hoping for. Good luck to you both.
You have both shared the most important fact.... Its about enjoying the ride of life but most importantly sticking to your guns relating to your total well being. Please never give up.... A fantastic history you both have and fascinating. Thank you for sharing this detail of your lives from the beginning. Very appreciated and sharing with my teenage children at the moment.... PS wait till you can catch game fish off the stern while touring the world..
I've now watched all 4 parts of your journey of restoring Josefine, and despite a life long background in sailing (and restoring way too many boats myself! LOL) I must say: I am amazed! Totally awed! Am tipping my (virtual) hat to you and am thinking that you deserve all the respect anyone can muster! I am a tad younger (I guess) than you, turning 62 in April, but I would not have the strength (most of all the "mental strength") to embark on a journey like you did and still do. Most certainly have subscribed and am looking forward to seeing more of you (excelently compiled) videos - and will check if I can somewhere find a way to directly contact you. Once again: Chapeau!
Thank you for the frank and personal story of your journey to ownership and restoration of Josefine (which happens to be my wife's name.) Here in the US, I am neighbor to Leo Goolden's restoration of Tally Ho (note the coincidence of my surname.) Following Leo's progress over the past two years or so, I have also explored many other boat and ship restoration sites. Yours is particularly interesting and worth following. I salute your commitment to the restoration of the boat and am confident that you will find a large community eager to lend a hand to your endeavor. Best wishes from Washington State, USA and, by all means, continue your dialog with all of your followers.
You are outstanding. I am going back to work at 70. Not for the same reasons but it seems we do. So p,eased you are holding up. Just keep on going forward and planning. I suspect with your determination you will get there.
Transparency! What a brave and beautiful thing! I applaud you, and thank you for showing, as much as you are able, your true selves and your true story! 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you for sharing your backstory. You have seemly have put your lifestyle on the line multiple times so you deserve my greatest respect! I do hope the next chapters again unfold favourably for you. I'm certainly going to follow your progress👏👏
So glad there are folks like yourselves in this world, so inspirational. Wooden boats are always a work in progress, I know, I own a 70 year old kauri pine ketch, but they are much more than the sum of their parts. How about a Patreon page? Sure would like to help Josefine become your perfect home. Will be keen to see your future stories!
Thanks for your eloquent ‘back story’. Life has the habit of dealing the hand and leaving it to us to play. You’ve had a interesting and varied life and are facing life with stoicism that I admire. Ironically I’m in the process of leaving the canals for similar reasons as yourselves. Hopefully you will make a success in restoring Josephine. Best of luck in your endeavour.
It sounds to me like you've both spent a life of chasing your dreams. I really hope everything works out and you get to sail to the ends of the earth. And I'll be here for every episode of it. All the best of luck. From Smyrna, Ga. Just outside of Atlanta.
As someone who has been on the negative side of a survey and being somewhat misled, I can sympathise with your experience but Im also excited to see the old girl be brought back to life (as I have done with my own boat) The craftsmanship is amazing so far! Watching your deck come back to life with the final stage of caulking almost made me tear up. Theres nothing like an old wooden boat. All the best. 👍🏻
Thank you so much for your support and kind words, we don't mind making you cry so long as they are happy tears!😊 We hope you will continue to follow us and that we can give you more to smile about.
Thanks for sharing your story, wishing you the very best of luck, looking forward to following your next steps and future voyages/travels. Keep chasing those dreams, you deserve way more subscribers by the way!
Thank goodness there are people who do not restrict themselves by wondering about what is possible. Instead you restrict yourselves to what you would like to do, and then get on with making it happen.
Bonjour, What a life you have already crossed ! All these challenges, I would have liked to do 1/100 of them. This new project is huge but I trust your experience to succeed. And because we are on January, please let me tell you "Bonne Année, mes Meilleurs Vœux de réussite pour ce fantastique projet que je vais suivre avec grand intérêt". I hope you kept a few notions of French :+) Amicalement, Raphaël
Bonjour Raphaël, thank you for your good wishes, we loved our years in France and still visit when we can, we made many lovely friends there who we keep in touch with.
The Sea and old wooden working Boats become a passion and an obsession don't they. The drawback is the horrendous cost in time and money. I wish I was a rich man and I would help you. It's not right that you should have spent so much time apart. All I can say is good luck to you both and a better future in your beloved Boat.
Great story! I am impresses with Randy and your tenacity to live life rather than watch life go by. I couldn't tell you had no experience in boat building/restoration as you did a great job on big tasks. I know you will be successful.
Yes, growing up in the post ww2 era was a lesson in how to reinvent ourselves from one occupation to another due to economic and political issues of the day. I do admire your ability to adapt to the situation at hand ! I also enjoy the videos !
Very happy to have found you guys on RUclips. I follow builds and refits and the more day by day come what may blogs. Ya'll have a interesting story to tell and I pray and look forward to the day you are on the water hopefully sharing more of your life and travels with even more of us in the future. Thanks n God bless.
Thank you for the back story. You both have a great attitude even when things are as rosy as you had hoped they be at this time in your life. Be open to alternate incomes and ideas and you will survive the storms of life.
Hi, I loved watching this 'back story' video...puts everything into perspective. I have things to do today ( here in New Zealand ) but I just have to watch part 4 right away so the other stuff will have to wait. I really admire the way you've both followed your dreams and are prepared to get stuck in and work hard to achieve your goals.
Quite impressed by your story, challenging yourselves is your lifestyle :) And it also must feel OK too! You’ll find ways to get beautiful Josefine alive and kicking. Good luck and enjoy the ride!
You tell your stories well and the film making is good and getting better so I see no reason why RUclips (or another platform) can fail to provide you with an interesting revenue stream in the future. There is an appetite for journeys like yours involving carpentry, boats (wooden) and sailing. A tip for you is to include the word "sailing" in your channel name, that's how the algorythm likes it. I admire what you're doing, keep doing it..
This video puts the entire restoration project in context…As the old saying goes.."no pain, no gain"…You both are people with zest and drive… That will be way more important in conquering the financials…I love the results of what you both have done so far…
In the words of J.Tull "Nothing is easy". Fortunately both of y'all are obviously determined and motivated. Better to have a life lived than watched. Many times I have actually sat down in the middle of something I have put Hundreds of thousands of dollars in and months of labor and wanted to question how stupid can I really be? At sixty-four years old I'm still investigating that! Regardless of the outcome, I think the work y'all are doing "for" Josefine is important.🏴☠ Btw, your video and presentation work is great.
Thanks for sharing! 😊 “In the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take, relationships we were afraid to have, and the decisions we waited too long to make.”
I have no idea of what will come but listening to you folks I do know if I rest, I will rot. God bless. If you find yourselves wondering about the American great lakes do drop by, I can offer a gin , some American beef and an American wine.
Great, glad you filled that part in. Wish I had loads of money, I would send it to you right away so that doesn't need to be a stress for you and stand in your way. I had a 1950 wooden Sloop for 22 years which I maintained and loved and still dearly love and I keep up with the new Custodian. I respect deeply what you are doing. Seems Tally Ho on youtube is getting lot's of funding, not sure how they do it, wonder if you can garner some information from them and do the same, Patreon account etc. Love what your'e doing and love your channel. Peace, love and fruit!
Keep it going guy's. Your hard work and your endeavours, together with your pair of talented shipwrights, are truly brilliant. Certainty worth thinking about setting up a Patreon Account with RUclips so subscribers to your channel may help with donations in restoring Josefine and keeping alive your dream(s).
Hi Fred, thank you so much for your kind support. We may one day accept such help, if for example we have to stop sailing in order to find land based work trim pay the bills, then it would seem preferable to get paid to make videos, who knows, thank you for the thought.
Hi, yes I was very interested in your story and congratulate you for looking after all the animals whilst you could afford to. Also I was a solicitor in private practice and had a private pilots licence. I would also reckon that we are of a similar age but you have done a bit more exploring in life than I did, so again well done 👏🏼
Be great if you could meet up with Leo from Tally Ho as he seem to be a mind of how to build, manage and over come all the problems of getting an old lady back on the water. But that aside, you are so lucky to have each other and remain a team despite all the hassle and worry.
Hi, I really enjoyed your programme and especially the series of showing how to do. Especially the pich and okum series of doing the deck. I agree that you shoudl open a Patroen account and ask for contributions. I personally do support two programmes through Patreon so I can learn techniques for repairing my own boat ( a 1956 Hillyard 38' sloop) . Id pay 10 a month for that, and lots of others would. You would have to focus more on the repairs and how to do, sourcing materials, practical problems etc. The personal insight really gives an insight to appreciate you both as genuine people, struggling as we all do. Were near Wicklow Harbour Ireland so if you make it over here call in! I watch Sampspn and he has a high production value in video and craft production. A very different thing you are doing, however I pay him because he teaches technique well and I can replicate some of the works as I have some skills. You can do the same, as you seem to appreciate the beauty of worked wood, and I love the name wooden sailing! Keep at it, focus on the business sidfe of this a bit more and sail on. Look forward to the next installment. Keep going through the winter months.
Hi again Jacks, I have a bit more time now to give your comments a fuller response. I started videoing our life with Josefine simply because I enjoy story telling and filmmaking. I also enjoy entertaining. I made a little film once while living in Copenhagen, about Copenhagen, long before digital video, on my fathers old standard 8 ciné camera. That was 45 years ago and the film has been seen in total by 5 people! The internet has given people like me a unique opportunity to entertain on a much larger scale and that is chiefly our motivation! Now, as to the technical nature of our current episodes, of course I am aware of the potential usefulness of our experience to others and I love the thought of being able to help others, so I try to do that as much as possible. I must emphasise, however, and will again in future episodes, that I am no expert, I couldn’t do any of this without our shipwrights who really know what they are doing, at best we can be an inspiration to others which would be great. As to ‘patreon’ or crowd funding, that maybe one day something we might have to consider, if for example, in order to continue living on and sailing Josefine we have to find paid work again then being paid to make videos would be preferable to giving up the videos to work elsewhere, we couldn’t do both. For the moment, we are going to see if we can grow the channel big enough to create a worthwhile revenue from advertising, we live a very frugal life, so it wouldn’t take much. We hope you will continue to enjoy our story even after we have restored Josefine and begin cruising with her. Coincidentally, Randie and I have a very good friend who lives in Wicklow so we will be visiting, possibly even this year if we get Josefine finished in time! Cheers and good luck with your own project. Reg & Randie.
I know rules and regulations vary around the world and I live on the complete opposite side of the world so can't even guess, but life beyond restoration, is it possible to charter the boat. In a boutique way as in having people join you for legs of the journey to finance the actual journey. Could be fun, company (you have experience with hosting for profit so that's not a mystery) but more important will allow the journey to continue with Josephine. Unlikely to make moonbeams of cash but probably enough.
Binge watched all three parts over the last week. Amazing comment and effort. I’m sure you can have a successful fundraiser on Patreon or some other platform. Also, as pandemic limitation starts to ease off a bit 🤞🏻 would de happy to be a unqualified volunteer if any opportunity come up to sweep the floors, paint, move boxes, etc… best of luck with a project 🍀
Thank you so much for the encouragement and good wishes. If we make it to the sailing stage, we will be looking for crew from time to time so stay tuned!
Quite a story, and very well told and also informative videos. Maybe you should get a Patreon, thus enable followers to increase your finances, as a practical gesture of appreciation. There are a number of boatrestorer, builders around the world, ex Tally Ho, etc, ad infinitum having Patreon as help along all hard work with the ship....
Guys you will to sea in Josephine and you will have a wonderful time NOW THATS AN ORDER ! I'm an aged old fart 73 I used to renovate horse drawn vehicles last 15 yrs painting houses the state of our world regards travelling not likely I'm much help when you get to the painting of her. Remember prep prep and use marine grade undercoat re varnish work on new timber 50% PVA glue and water don't worry if it looks milky when applying excellent brushes are Unipro cheap and do a good job email me for advice. Cheers n beers Marty Australia
Hi Richard, short answer, yes. Not full time but definitely on longer passages. One of our goals is to sail to British Columbia via the NW passage, definitely then! We almost certainly will also take crew on voyages to the Scottish West Isles and whilst exploring the Baltic and Norwegian coast. We intend sailing mostly in these regions but may well head south for the winters! We are already keeping a list of candidates with their preferences and availability’s.🙂
I bet if u can get out a video a week of any work set up a patreon and ppl will help. RUclips likes lots of content itll share ur vids. I kno i watch Leo at Sampson boat Co and ill share this one all i can. But definetly its the ability 2 get out footage . Ppl like learning with you. But yeah DO NOT give up and keep reaching out ill donate when i can i kno many will
Hi Mark, We certainly hope it won't come to that as we love her and want to take her on great adventures in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions. We won't give up without a fight.
Thank you George, for the moment, just the fun of making them is enough but if things get tight we will certainly consider it, we want to keep videoing and sharing our journey.
Start patrion and maybe PayPal donations. If you get your viewers up you can start to stack a little savings just with those 2 and RUclips. But you need to have weekly videos or biweekly at the least.
Thanks Brandon, we don’t really want to go down that avenue although we think it is a valid and very positive contribution to modern life. I doubt it would make much difference to our current predicament. We may change our mind in the future if we need to raise funds for ongoing expenses as it would be preferable to hanging up our life jackets and working on land!🙂
I know where you are taking this however, the internet is in my opinion getting extremely clogged up with this exact scenario and it has to do with funding peoples dreams. Dreamers never really do anything hence the term dreamers and somehow get revered as magnificent and it makes no sense. Not to be disingenuous to you but it reminds me of how all of us in our 60’s and 70,s have these horrible millennial kids that really don’t want to do anything but want everything we have and not put their nose to the grind stone like we did. I’ll get off my high horse now and move on to counting my money and pondering who’s dreams I need to fund.
@@SailingWood Well, I really can’t be any more specific and I’m confident most people that actually have the ability to think will know precisely what my comments mean, and I do enjoy your content and appreciate your reply and letting me participate.

Thank you so much for the encouragement, we are so pleased you enjoyed our video.
Good luck to the two of you. I sincerely hope this works out for you. You certainly have the drive and the intelligence.
Thank you Vernon, not sure about the intelligence! 🙂
Very adventurous lives.
Thank you Steve
Thanks for sharing! 😊 “In the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take, relationships we were afraid to have, and the decisions we waited too long to make.”
So very true, thanks for watching.
I have no idea of what will come but listening to you folks I do know if I rest, I will rot. God bless. If you find yourselves wondering about the American great lakes do drop by, I can offer a gin , some American beef and an American wine.
Thank you Timothy, if we make it to the sailing stage, our medium term plans include passing your way.
Love your good wishes Leon, we hope you continue to enjoy our journey.
remember life is not a destination , it is the journey that counts
Couldn’t agree more Kevin.
Looking forward to more episodes 😀
And we are looking forward to providing them Steve, thanks for joining us.
Guy's spread the word about this amazing story of hard work and perseverance, see if we can get the sub count up to start.
Thank you David, we hope you will stick with us.
@@SailingWood l will 👍🏼
Be great if you could meet up with Leo from Tally Ho as he seem to be a mind of how to build, manage and over come all the problems of getting an old lady back on the water. But that aside, you are so lucky to have each other and remain a team despite all the hassle and worry.
Thank you, and welcome.
inspirational.
Thank you Ricky.
Thank you Jacks, we appreciate your comments.
Would so damn love to work on such a project.
Thanks for watching, we’ll keep that in mind! 🙂
If you are ever in north Wales come by for a cuppa! My story is similar in many ways with an old wooden boat that is a work in progress!
You guys are an inspiration. I just wish I could give you some money to help you fulfill you're dreams.
Thank you Paul, we are just happy that people enjoy our videos.
Thank you Mikael for your support, maybe one day if our seafaring proves interesting enough.
Cheers n beers Marty Australia
Thank you Sue, thanks for the encouragement, hope you will stay with us.
Why don't you do later on if you have not already
will you be needing crew?
Hi Richard, short answer, yes. Not full time but definitely on longer passages. One of our goals is to sail to British Columbia via the NW passage, definitely then! We almost certainly will also take crew on voyages to the Scottish West Isles and whilst exploring the Baltic and Norwegian coast. We intend sailing mostly in these regions but may well head south for the winters! We are already keeping a list of candidates with their preferences and availability’s.🙂
I bet if u can get out a video a week of any work set up a patreon and ppl will help. RUclips likes lots of content itll share ur vids. Thank you Captain for the encouragement!
Mein Abbo haben Sie beide schon mal sicher!
Thank you, we appreciate your support and encouragement.
Live and learn. See if you can sell the boat.
Hi Mark, We certainly hope it won't come to that as we love her and want to take her on great adventures in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions. We won't give up without a fight.
You should get set up with patreon.
Thank you George, for the moment, just the fun of making them is enough but if things get tight we will certainly consider it, we want to keep videoing and sharing our journey.
Brig? Topsail schooner, by definition a brig only has two masts.
Thank you Jonathan, you are quite right. She is gaff rigged on all 3 masts, no square sails.
Slip of my hand what I meant was patreon
Start patrion and maybe PayPal donations. If you get your viewers up you can start to stack a little savings just with those 2 and RUclips. But you need to have weekly videos or biweekly at the least.
Thanks Brandon, we don’t really want to go down that avenue although we think it is a valid and very positive contribution to modern life. I doubt it would make much difference to our current predicament. We may change our mind in the future if we need to raise funds for ongoing expenses as it would be preferable to hanging up our life jackets and working on land!🙂
free spirits never conform, do they?
It’s hard!🙂
I know where you are taking this however, the internet is in my opinion getting extremely clogged up with this exact scenario and it has to do with funding peoples dreams. Dreamers never really do anything hence the term dreamers and somehow get revered as magnificent and it makes no sense. Not to be disingenuous to you but it reminds me of how all of us in our 60’s and 70,s have these horrible millennial kids that really don’t want to do anything but want everything we have and not put their nose to the grind stone like we did.
I’ll get off my high horse now and move on to counting my money and pondering who’s dreams I need to fund.
Hi Tom, not sure what you are saying, you will have to be more explicit. Hope you enjoyed the video nevertheless.

Well, I really can’t be any more specific and I’m confident most people that actually have the ability to think will know precisely what my comments mean, and I do enjoy your content and appreciate your reply and letting me participate.
