This was the first PC game I ever played and MW3/MW4 remain the only games me and my dad ever took turns playing together. Fond memories that will never be lost, 10/10! /e The opening scene to this gets me choked up every time I see it, the nostalgia and pure awsomeness is off the charts!
I really love it when the stubborn clanners bid a 1v1 batchall against you, you told your lances to stand down and go out alone against them. 100% respect for you for that. Gosh, I somehow love MW3's gameplay more than MW4, even though MW4 was my first introduction to the game (and lore).
Good memories :) I was 12 years old when first playing through and it was my first encounter with the battletech universe. Before the first patches got released, Anihilators one shot killed you with their ACs, which made the mission where you find ephona in that mine extremely difficult. in particular because you died 20 times before that encounter running into bridges or other obstacles with your cockpit which was also meant instant game over. i liked your approach to the last mission. i always saved up the very sparse gauss rifles and ammo just for that mission and throw four of them into the daishi. quite effective.
Thanks for the feedback. I've tried to avoid using cheesy loadouts in this playthrough, but now I would redone it, sticking to weapons, which were actually used in TT.

i remember it...just like yesterday. I was already hearing how glorious the MW series was but never managed to experience it beforehand. my first mw was the 3rd but my friends always urged me about mw2:mercs...never been able to find it....I still feel the same excitement with the bushwacker after 25 years...omg those beautiful days...
this game has aged so well. the mission briefings are phenomenally voiced, script is SOLID. mechs move with weight and a real feeling of scale. the effects they put in were done in such a way to not look like a gimmick - from the water to the lasers, its dated but holds up in its own right. the AI isnt the best but its passable in a team setting with an open environment. what do you use to play this? you rotate so easily, when last i played i used the number pad to move the torso and was MUCH slower
I play with Mouse and Keyboard. Mouse used for torso twisting, while WSAD for movement. Also, I oftenly switch between torso modes and use Free Look, by holding right mouse button. With constant 60 FPS controls are much smoother and responsive, than when you play without graphics wrapper.
@@Scorch0017 yea to be sure the voodoo and mods help a lot. my point was that if someone were not technically inclined and just wanted to relive it - the game CAN be run at a passable stability with out mucking about. lower barrier to entry. i may do a stream of this some day, would like to go through it again. good memories from 8th grade
The briefing guy is amazing. He's so monotone, but not in a bad way. A professional way, and the way he talks is realistic, the small inflections that do betray some emotions. You can see this in Starship Troopers: Terran Ascendancy. He's reading through a briefing, and then pauses just briefly and reads the name of a certain sergeant who caused you grief in an earlier mission with a shift in tone, you can really tell he's doing that thing where someone eyes a piece of paper at a slight angle and widens their eyes because it jumps out at them for all the wrong reasons, but they're keeping calm and professional.
No i would say this game aged poorly. Considering how hard it is to get running and how shit the early game is when you have no heatsinks. Also collision with terrain is awful
@@HelminthCombos collision is rough at times but not game breaking by any means. no heatsinks is solved really fast in teh game though with salvage. as for getting it running... it runs with out any mods or tools on windows 10 (havent tried 11 yet) albeit with some crashing here and there and less than optimal textures and resolution on modern systems. a couple tools, some mods, and a tweak gets it running very well and stable on modern systems.
This game was so good. I however dont care for mapping twist to mouse. Old school we had twist on KB, and that allowed the reticle to move freely. Way more precise aiming. Still a super nice to see this in proper aspect at high res! Thanks for this!.
You can switch between torso twist and free aim with the one press of a button. I didn't do this often because free-aim could trivialize the encounters. Also it look kind of strange.
Whoever if piloting that Thor is one seriously malicious dude. The way he just vaporizes a person on foot in the street with an ERPPC, literally point blank, and then actually looks downward to watch his mech squash someone else with less thought than if they were stepping on a cockroach really makes the atmosphere hit you pretty hard.

I purchased a dirt cheap laptop from 2008 with a gtx 280m and dual core extreme processor, more than enough for these old games and with less hassle in compatibility. A sidewinder force feedback 2 and a big box copy of this game. Installed the voodoo mods and hi res pack. I always wanted to try Mechwarrior 3 after falling in love with the series back when Mech 4 first came out. With the added force feedback from the stick its a phenomenal experience. Ok its dated, but it plays soooo well.
Great playthrough! It was fun reliving this story and wishing my dgvoodoo could run it without severe frame rate issues. Of all the Mechwarrior games I miss this one the most. Was it perfect? Who cares, it was fun and I loved it, and that's what matters.
32:50 So is it just me, or when you Shoot Down those Towers that are held up by just 1 Pillar, you can hear the Air Gushing around them as they Collapse because of how Massive and Dense they are? Also on a side note, I recall you can also get your Mech Crushed if you stood right under them when they Collapse. Is that true?
This was the first mechwarrior game I played. Just came from MW5. I can't get over how floating the mechs are. They seemed to be bouncing around, running around weightless. Get stuck on an obstacle? The second you are unstuck, you move at full speed. Such a hack of a game. Blown off a leg? ah it's fine, it'll just limp.
People, I don't know where to write.. In general, on the 4th mission of the 3rd act, the enemy's military factories and turrets already look like destroyed, but they still appear as targets for destruction. Can someone tell me what it is and how to solve it?
Just started watching and it looks great. I'm not a legger so that's one thing I would change. I love instant action in pirates moon where I would pit my elemental against assault mechs. The atlas was the easiest to kill because its head was so big. 😉
After playing through This, Mechwarrior 4, and Mechwarrior 5, I prefer the more militaristic feel of Mechwarrior 3. Wish it could get some form of remastering. Luckily we have tools like Dgvoodoo and other community fixes to help make it run.
I love the more immersivness and weight of MW3. Especially the arm targeting and that the cockpit glass can get cracked! Some will whine that it hinders seeing. The dezgra spite immersion. So for say future MW games, PGI could add immersive effects like that in a immersion mode or as settings options. We need remakes/ remasters of older MW games. Its a hazzle yo get MW3 to run on modern systems

Most of the missions in the game can be easily completed simply by using distance and long-range weapons. Although it will be slower and probably not very interesting.
Also love how the Annihilator is so unlike the actual Annihilator... lol. The movement animations in this game are so good though. The cockpit sways in the direction of travel no matter which way you are facing. I don't think MW4 did that, and I know MW5 doesn't do it.
@@Scorch0017 Yeah the overuse of omnislots was a big complaint at the time. Personally I don't like the way MW5 handles it by forcing you into specific sizes and types of weapon slots. MW4 did a great job of balancing out customization.
What is a Scorch though? I dont remember that mech, and cant easily spot it online, except for a RP forum. Is it a mod or is my memory not as flawless as it used to be :)
Beautiful game, impressive play - it's just a shame the AI can be a bit daft. "I'm in a light mech against a 50 ton machine. Better stand still fifty metres away so it can shoot me, I don't need to use my speed as an advantage!"
A shame this one is really hard to get working on a Windows 10. Now, imagine if you had to beat this game without legging enemy mechs. How would you go about it?
It's not hard, the only things required are dgVoodoo 2 and ZipperFixup. Well, mostly the same. The game would still provide player with salvage, though at decreased rate, I think.
hard? it works out of hte box. runs with zero mods or fiddling. you can use mods to make it run a bit smoother and inprove graphics but you dont need to do ANYTHING to make it load and run. you dont need dgvoodoo or zipper fix even
@@beardedgaming1337 dgvoodoo 2 provides options to set any resolution, aspect ratio and force AA and anisotropy filtration. Also, without it MW3 will have unstable FPS, which seriously affects gameplay. ZipperFixup fixes game braking issues, which MW3 have with modern CPUs, such as not working AMS or armored vehicles jumping into the stratosphere. Previously this could be fixed by capping FPS at 30 or by tinkering with CPU speed.
I've played MW3 so many times I can get through all the missions without losing my mech. Played MW4 (both) and found them to be crap in just about every way. The voice "acting" (My Duke) was so bad i shut off the sound. And Mechs aren't ballet dancers! Why did they make the damage so lame? MW3 is still a great game after 25 years. When my old PC died, I bought an old laptop, loaded a fresh Win XP and was able to run MW3 with patches. Still has some of the glitches like bouncing vehicles... but I can overlook them. I'm not an online or multiplayer gamer so I wish there were a MW3 update that adds new missions or mods them. Looking around for such and not finding much.
I remember being 8 and playing this loaded up a dire wolf with like 12 er large lasers and sent myself to high orbit in one glorious alpha strike (i had no extra heat sinks just lasers and speed) never laugh that hard in my life since killed the tank that was annoying me tho

Head collision.@@Scorch0017 It definitely could be a bug since I remember this happening to myself on one of those same bridges, but either it happened with other bridges too or I just assumed it was a normal thing to watch out for. IIRC MW3 had that ricochet-sounding collision system, where if you impacted on something too firmly, like scraping along, it sounded like (and thus surely being registered as) multiple collisions, so it was likely for this multiple impact to be registered on the head if a mech ran into a low bridge. I still remember how I had some difficulty in that mission in my first tries (or maybe it just felt long) and I had completed all mission objectives and was just enjoying the scenery and running around in my Thor. I go under one of those bridges wondering if I fit, and I'm destroyed and fail the mission. ^^;

But basically, after installing the game you will need to download and setup dgVoodoo 2 graphic wrapper. Also, ZipperFixup from GitHub can fix the issues with game speed, like jumping APCs and tanks or glitched weather effects.
i did not need to change anything to make this work on windows 10 with a 5800x and 3080. it just loaded and went. i installed some texture packs and a high res mod. all went with out a hitch.

I do miss the very talkative enemies. It made your opponents feel less like bots.

Exactly! I also liked, how he just took a quick glance at the direction of Timber Wolf explosion, and then proceeded to massacre IS forces.
The Jags always seemed to revel in the violence in the lore so this tracks.
Yeah I tried replicating that in one of the map where it has a small town with some people on the streets.

Man this military briefing style missions absolutely blows away what they did in mechwarrior 5. i like MW5 but i wish they did something like this.
Funny enough, in the new clans game the mission briefings are no so subtly inspired by these.

being a little kid, playing this with a joystick, not really understanding whats going on(didnt know there was a manual)... so many good memories.
One thing that really made this game was the briefings. The voice actor, who also did the voicework for Falcon 4.0, had a perfect voice for it.

I do find it hilarious that the clan mechs were brought low by a fellow clan mech being pilot by an IS pilot :) salvage is king in this universe

MW5 Mercs is now the top dog I'd say - though I really have a soft spot for MW3 - amazing at the time.

MW3 had the right "stompy" feeling i missed in later mw games.

Mechs are just templates here, you can make whatever you want from them as long as weight limit isn't exceeded. I'm not a fan of such design.

The chances of getting the salvage are reduced on high difficulty, if I remember correctly.
