This interview completely changed my life in ways I could have never imagined. It gave me my values. Because it recommended the reading of The brothers karamazov. And believe me, when I say that you must read it. It is so worthy. Thank you, Terrence and Martin.
befero So interesting he happened to mention that bc I'm in the middle of reading it. How he finished it in a week I don't know, but it's undoubtedly the most powerful peace of literature I've ever come across. As I read it I'm aware that (particular chapters) I'll have to read again and again, and will keep a copy of it all my life.
So glad I found this. The film stands alone. Not that there aren't some other great ones, but in my experience as a movie watcher there just isn't anything else "like" Badlands. For me it achieves something I wouldn't have thought possible: a fascinatingly amoral film that somehow leaves the viewer with a powerful moral statement. Brilliant.
Malick loosely quoted the Brothers Karamazov in the movie Tree of Life. Brad pit says, "Someday we'll fall down and weep. And we'll understand it all, all things” and in Brothers Karamazov, Zosima says, "we don't understand that life is heaven, for we have only to understand that and it will at once be fulfilled in all its beauty, we shall embrace each other and weep."
This is really interesting. He got the part in Badlands doing an audition for a commercial? Funny about Malick getting out of Hollywood after Days of Heaven. He did not make another film for something like 17 years.
For my money Malick's Badlands is one of the best films ever made. I find this clip fascinating.
+Travis Darko I agree.
Totally. Absolutely. And Days of Heaven is right next to it.

I have found this video two years after this comment. Still, no words to express myself.
It has been on my 'must read' list for years now. My soul thanks you in advance for the push.

This film is exquisite.
"Is it yourself?" I am only going to greet people like this from now on.
Really really good interview, one of my fav films , just so many levels to it
This was interesting. Thank you for sharing this talk.
One wonders how a guy that shy can pull performances out of people. And get crews to do the magic we've seen.
the daimon will not be denied
He ain't that shy.
The thumbnail shot and a number of other times in the film; this pose looks the the scarecrow from the wizard of Oz, I can't shake the connection.
Malick hit it out of the park with his first film Badlands. Then he followed it up with Days of Heaven.
...And then The Thin Red Line.
This is really interesting. He got the part in Badlands doing an audition for a commercial?

The Brothers Karamazov - by Dostoyevsky
The casting director for Badlands, Dianne Crittenden, made an excellent call. Martin WAS right for the part.
complete interview
great. thanks
That is a bizarre story about getting the part in Badlands off of a jeans commercial.
i would not say it was bizarre but serendipitous
Has anyone read that book he mentioned, "The brothers Karamazov"?
Yes, It's probably one of the greatest masterpieces of world literature.
he and Sissy Spacek both looked younger than they really were .when it was shot, I think Sheen was 33.
The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky.

It is good he came back to Jesus
