    That little scene with Twink's mother is so wonderfully written. In one second we find out that Twink is a home carer, as well as a worker, so all her shenanigans - coming in late, hungover, having random sex with strangers - suddenly have a huge, pathos-ridden context. It's the kind of writing only Victoria Wood could have done.

      Maxine Peake is an extraordinary actress too! (Her Doll Tearsheet in The Hollow Crown is awesome!) Can I ask, are you British? Can you tell me if Twink's mother Bev has a scouse accent? I'm American, and I'm trying to get better at recognizing the various regional accents. Thanks!

      @@michaelocyoung Thanks! I'll take that as a good sign. I've only seen her in this single episode, but it's clear she's also a gifted actress. It's hard to say that in this episode when there is so much talent everywhere. She made me love her from her first lines. That caught me off-guard too, because I assumed someone like Twink might have absent parents. But it fits that all her self-confidence comes from love. ♥

    A cast to die for. I saw Dora Bryan in "Hello Dolly" when I was a small boy at Leeds and was mesmerised by her singing and dancing talents. In those days people like her held the audience in the palms of their hands, and her comic timing was masterly. The only other time I witnessed such skill was Barry Humphries as Edna Everage (also at Leeds). Victoria Woods' script is a masterclass in writing; Yorkshire comics delight in the "daft" and her scripts are chock full of it. Anne Reid's description of an aunt buttering a coaster at a wedding, thinking it was crispbread, is a typical Woods image, as is a pelvic floor like a bulldog clip. Woods is sorely missed in these days of boring, tedious comedy writing.

    This episode aired in December 1998, 21 years ago, and in Bren's 'rant' over the tuna 'n sweetcorn she mentions 'rain forests coming down, polar ice caps melting and people living in cardboard boxes' ..... ahead of her time or do some things never change?

    • @knitnkitten
      @knitnkitten 4 года назад +4

    • @LynxSouth
      @LynxSouth 4 года назад +2

      @@knitnkitten Silent Spring was published in 1962 (it shocks me how long negative effects of modern practices have been known about yet ignored).
      @Simon Bampton The 90s were when environmental issues became regular fare for discussion and news programs, but they'd been growing in the public awareness, as little.kitten wrote. People have been living in cardboard boxes and raw wood shipping crates since such containers came into existence. The only question has been, what percentage of the population is in them. So, Bren was simply addressing ongoing current events of the time.

To them it can be like a connection to life - their life before cancer, an ordinary pleasure in a world of imminent death. It's also a really funny device for Tony to escape from uncomfortable situations. "Come on if you think you're hard enough. Periods." "Ha ha ha. Three weeks late." "Bren, you sort it out. • @SensualWhirl
      @SensualWhirl 6 лет назад +6

      She was one of Britain’s top athletes so, yeah she was a well-known person. I think the comparison was because Fatima Whitbread had great big 80’s perm at one time and Anita’s new hairstyle was a bit of a throwback. Jane may or may not have meant it as a backhanded compliment.
