Amazing! I checked that I liked this video some time before but I never remember seeing any of this. What a nice surprise. Great looking boards appear like they are original equipment.
I would say that back in the day, they enclosed the case to provide a temperature stable enviornment. and possible keep out RF. Lots of the older solid state test equipment was designed this way. keep em comming, Greg.
You have a extremely tremendous amount of electronic theory knowledge, and a extremely tremendous amount of practical electronic repair knowledge. Was wondering where you got all this awesome electronic knowledge.
I used to have a panel-mount Anadex frequency counter with Nixie tubes in it. It came off of an old Monarch lathe and served as a digital RPM indicator.
Nice modification; although as you said they did not bother with ported holes to help dissipate the heat. I would assume the reasoning is replacement, but the way you have it set up for your personal needs indicates it will last for years. "Excellent Demonstration"
Really cool how you can made boards without lots of problems. I remember when I had a boss over a decade ago that made his own boards using silk screen printing, and I was the one that had to fix the holes in the traces.
I recently got a Monsanto101C counter. It lights up well but won't count, only shows 10000 .. Do you know where I can get a pdf of the schematic or of similar model? The problem is likely in one of the several power regulators but I have no way to know what the voltages are. Ebay has schematic/manuals but the cost is 2x what I paid for this oldie!
I love that your "backyard method" circuit boards and "junk box" components look better than most quote unquote professional boards. Your layouts look like artwork. Nice work!
Request to go over the stock Monsanto 5v linear power supply section. I picked up an 100c and 5v dead. An odd teepee of two components on the 6.2v zener from schematics and was hoping to gain insight on what looks to be a company semi hack. Thanks Paul
Love Nixie too, Would you consider teaching us designing a bench top Frequency counter with keypad for input frequency that can produce sin waves up to 1.2 Ghz?
I would like to post a question, about, building a simple DC motor controller, for a brushed 24 volt motor from an electric mobility scooter. Where do I do that.
I like Nixie tube, I also have a counter with Nixie tube. You could use circuits intended for Nixie. Our Czech brand has designation TESLA MH74141 or manufacture of Texas designation SN74141. You do not have to use a combination MPSA42 and BCD decoder. Unfortunately the decoders are not produced, but for example through the bazaar can get.
Hi Mr Calrson, can you make a video explaining how some frequency counter works? I would like to know how it gets the signal and counts, what kind of wave forms it can counts. Tanks.
Nice Mod. classic ham stuff, but would linking Tx & Rx to a Freq. standard have been an option? Those long legged IC's I have seen before but I cannot remember where. Seems like a time shift, Nixie's were around with 5volt logic, but would have thought long gone by the time 3.3volt came into use. We were always about a year behind the US anyway.
+klystron44 Strange IC's indeed! A few have failed, so luckily I had the old pcb cards from the display units to take some IC's from. I think it may be a "whisker "problem inside the original IC's.
Hi Paul. I'm with Scott. Mow watching your course. I was a carpenter. Now retired I have a shop of many hats. How do I start (would you build) building a Nixie Tube rpm display with an integrated actuator of the factory installed router speed control for a Milwaukee 5625. Making a router table so I can then make the cabinetry to watch you with my Epson projector to help me get the big picture.
+Mr Carlson's Lab Ah I'm already resigned to the fact, hopefully they're not some crazy, hard to find size. I'm trying to restore my Tek TM5600 chassis and do you think I can find an 1100uf, 200V cap anywhere in Australia? Gah!
Hi Stephen, as you can see, I'm kinda fond of Nixies. I have built many of this variant for my ham op friends. I will do a video on the construction of the board with schematics in the future. Thanks for watching! Stop by any time.
Hi Anthony, I will do a video on the PCB boards. I'm waiting for another video that requires me to make a board. Then I will do a run down on the process in that video. Thanks for the comment!
And then a legendary channel was born. ✨
Amazing! I checked that I liked this video some time before but I never remember seeing any of this. What a nice surprise. Great looking boards appear like they are original equipment.
I'm very impressed with your toner transfer PCBs, they're extremely clean, you clearly put a lot of time and effort into it. Amazing work.
Thanks for your kind comment!
Paul you are genius sir! Love the way you explain your work, so easy to understand. Thanks again for your videos, im re-learning so much. Lee
I have a nixie tube VOM. I really like nixie tubes. So unique.
I would say that back in the day, they enclosed the case to provide a temperature stable enviornment. and possible keep out RF. Lots of the older solid state test equipment was designed this way. keep em comming, Greg.
Gregory West Thanks for the comment Greg!
2024 ... looking back in time of this great channel
Great to see someone who goes to great lengths to do nice neat work using quality components! Nice work!
Thanks for the comment wb8cxo!

Mr Carlson how can I learn electronics like you. Your knowledge is very impressive and way above my head. Love all your videos
Absolutely love your approach to electronic mods. Its exemplary. Given the boards are homemade without the help of expensive industrial devices.
Thanks Frank!

Thanks for your kind comment John!
Very neat work!

Wow. 6 years now. Time flies.
Do more Nixie tube gear please. I find it very interesting.
Nixie Frequency Counter Modification.
This is where it all started!

We need more videos! Very nice PCBs!
Thanks Aleska! More video's are on the way.

74141 chips are still being produced in Belarus as the 155ID1.

...and here I thought Monsanto only made genetically engineered crops. Haha

No micro controller ?
A very awesome video my friend.
Is it possible to do some videos on tv repair
Is this the GM corn and Roundup Monsanto?
You can tell this is one of mr Carlson’s proudest little accomplishments. Lol
My very first video.... This is going back quite some time now.
Mr Carlson's Lab oh well I never would have guessed that. Wow. And Ty.
Ya you do look a little younger now that you mention it lol ;)
Even though it says video #1. (I’m slow).
Great work! I just grabbed a HP 5326B off eBay, nice bit of gear.
+Ash Powell
That's a nice Nixie counter and DVM all in one. Good score! Does it work?
Yeah I was happy! I'm waiting for delivery at the moment, it powers on and looks mint so i have high hopes for actual operation.
It will probably need capacitors. You might luck out though.

Time to Knock on Daves door... LOL! Are you far from him?
great modification.
How old is it by the Philips capacitors I would guess 1985 ??
smbrob Oh, I think they are early 70's.
I well remember the Nixie counters :) We didn't have any with your mods :) Nice job.

Great Video! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
Great vidio! Could you make a video on the process you go through to design and make your circuit boards? It turns out very nice PCB's.
Tony

Thanks Mr Carlson. You have really made some great videos.
is this your ham shack? Looks different than your lab. 73, KV4VT Chuck
Its the side of the lab less viewed.
+Mr Carlson's Lab ...thanks...I really appreciate your videos. You are a gifted instructor and engineer. 73, KV4VT
Im guessing the thing didnt have vent holes because they didnt want nasty chemicals getting into it. Monsanto was a chemical company after all
+Nexfero
I think this was a different company, or maybe an electronics division.
Any "GMO's" in that thing ?!
+Steve lavalette
LOL, That was my very first video.... I did make a pun about that in the video though :^)
+Mr Carlson's Lab i missed it !
love the vids !
Can you do a tube audio preamp video ? There are no videos at all on them.
......Creativedesigncomponents......So yeah, I was wondering what you do....!
+Doug Ankrum
Now you know :^)
Nice D:
Thanks!
aye!!
