Historically, Russia's largest gas customer, Germany, has compliantly overlooked Russian wars of aggression, human rights violations and the murder of opposition members. Putin obviously expected this to continue and Germany to use its strong political influence on the EU.
I'm not sure that Russia realized the EU would stop buying. They, and the US, didn't really have a big reaction th the 2014 annexation in Eastern Ukraine. They probably expected the 'special military operation' would be a quick fait accompli with no serious consequences.

Russian TV was even broadcasting images of Europeans freezing without Russian Gas. This was the dream of Putin, something he and his advisers had predicted. Luckily dreams only happen in your sleep 😂
Good analysis. One important thing to correct is - Russia stopped supplying the gas to major Europian countries by themselves. That was not a result of sanctions, rather part of blackmail strategy by Putin and attempt to use gas supply as part of hybrid warfare against West.
We have to remember that European Union 🇪🇺 made plans to switch to LNG if necessary already 2014 when Ruzzia annexed Crimea. European Union 🇪🇺 made plans ready if the supply is compromised. When Ruzzia then attacked the Ukraine 🇺🇦 European Union 🇪🇺 built 42 LNG terminals around the Europe in less than a year.
It's amazing how easy propaganda is spread when it takes 3secs on Google: "From a time perspective, an LNG Terminal would take about 5 -7 years to build and start operating; whereas an FSRU can be erected in about 3 years.Feb 6, 2023" And you say they built 42 in a year...😂😂😂
Close enough, you nailed the big picture. 42 terminals may have come online since 2014, but they took 5-7 years to build each one. In the last 2 years, 8 new terminals have come on line and 4 existing terminals completed expansion. Even a pre built floating terminal takes almost a year to make operational.

However, postwar Ukraine will own all the gas moving thru it, (reparations). Orbàn is gonna hate having buy gas from Ukraine, at market prices, no discount. Hydrogen is no source of energy, it is just an intermediate storage. As far as I understand, storaging and transporting hydrogen is far more difficult than playing with LNG.
China has done a great job with renewables to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. As one of the largest polluters in the world, I hope that China stays on track with their reduction of CO2 and doesn't start increasing their dependence again.
I think we also need to factor in that China's population is falling at a greater rate than it tells the world, hence the millions of empty apartments, so they know that their energy needs will eventually drop off. It's renewable sources are growing every year and once it gets its storage solutions in place, oil and gas will become redundant. In that case, paying for a gas line would be a waste.

Well done, Europe.
No one likes to admit it but china is the most innovative and strongest player in a green transition, not cause they give a you know what about global warming but because fossil fuel dependence means limiting geo political independence. China has deep issues with their system, but That’s a lesson Europe and the US should whole Heartedly take. Green funding is just as consequential as military funding for strategic flexibility
Not only their own independence, but cutting fuel demand has the nifty side benefit of hurting the US economy which is quite dependent on exporting oil and refined product.

China’s dependence on Russian energy is why it’s the world’s largest manufacturer, and Germany’s short sightedness is the cause of its rapid de industrialization. But you only understand these relationships from a colonizer’s point of view. No wonder the west is so indebted
Interesting that Russia invaded Ukraine knowing full well that most of Europe would stop buying their oil and gas.
It was a real gamble and for Russia, hasn't work out very well.
Can't see it recovering until a completely new Russian governance is in place.
Spot on ! A new government and an incredibly huge reparations check for Ukraine. russia won't recover until it has a stable source of export income. The damaged western built refineries can't be repaired until sanctions are lifted. That won't happen until the check clears.
Putin thought the war would be over before the lazy and decadent West could react and everyone would choose to accept the invasion rather than confront him.
@@richardcutts196 • I think you're right that Putin did not think Europe would stop buying. I think he suffered the problem that many leaders and ordinary people do, which is to believe your own press.

To make matters worse, as an authoritarian, Putin was surrounded by "yes" men, who might have been able to warn him that now was not a good time. Putin’s move played right into the hands of the climate activists.
I foresee bad times ahead for the Russian people.

Good analysis. One important thing to correct is - Russia stopped supplying the gas to major Europian countries by themselves. That was not a result of sanctions, rather part of blackmail strategy by Putin and attempt to use gas supply as part of hybrid warfare against West.
Putin threw a haymaker that we saw coming a mile away -- and dodged easily.
Wow... That was fast....
It's amazing how easy propaganda is spread when it takes 3secs on Google: "From a time perspective, an LNG Terminal would take about 5 -7 years to build and start operating; whereas an FSRU can be erected in about 3 years.Feb 6, 2023"
And you say they built 42 in a year...😂😂😂
The plans were ready to go. Using LNG terminal ships like in Finland and Estonia. You are free to Google it.
All the environmental issues were ironed out in the beginning so the permits were ready to go.

The brotherhood pipeline, the major one crossing Ukraine, concludes it's lease with Russia this year. That means the EU sales remaining to Russia - Hungry, Slovakia, and Austria are going away.
Possibly, it's definitely going to be an issue. I believe use of the pipeline will probably continue after the lease expires, for diplomatic reasons. However, postwar Ukraine will own all the gas moving thru it, (reparations). Orbàn is gonna hate having buy gas from Ukraine, at market prices, no discount. It will also give Ukraine leverage over Hungarian attempts to block NATO membership.

I am sceptical of the Chinese demand growth estimate. They are starting to come down from their demographic peak and much of the world is onshoring manufacturing. I expect their energy demand to remain level or drop off. Japan had a similar situation and Japan's energy consumption has dropped off over the last twenty years.
"limitless" friendship at it's best!!
As you have reported several times , right now the Chinese economy is not particularly liquid.
China has managed to create 2 totally solar cities that export a massive amount of electricity into their grid
Three years ago they commissioned their first thorium liquid salt reactor and I think no 3 is about the be fired up
So China will not be interested in building a russian pipeline
However watch what happens in Afghanistan

Absolutely, but they have been running a nasty hybrid war for more than a decade against Europe and our developed partners.
It is not like we are going to help Russia with trade or technology any time soon. They will have to show real progress in transparency, democracy and their behaviour against other countries.
Hydrogen is no source of energy, it is just an intermediate storage. As far as I understand, storaging and transporting hydrogen is far more difficult than playing with LNG.
Good decision by Chinese government!!!! As an green energy activist I appreciate it . Thank you China 🇨🇳
China has done a great job with renewables to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. As one of the largest polluters in the world, I hope that China stays on track with their reduction of CO2 and doesn't start increasing their dependence again.
They won't, they don't have the oil or gas or coal reserves.
@IslamicOrigins • China's investment in hydrogen also shows that it is serious about energy independence.

China would be wise not to do any business deals with Russia.
China: 📉🌀
China wants to be green. And that's a good thing.
China wants the West to think China wants to be green. When China stops building coal powered plants (much less roll them way back like the US is doing) I "might" believe China is really going green. Until then, I get to watch rising levels of mercury floating to the US from China....
Mr Putin, the gentlemen over there have bought you lunch. Please enjoy your Novichok sandwich!
Putin's advisers were 100 percent certain that the EU would be forced to continue buying Russian natural gas because there were no alternatives. But what happened? Sure, we got crazy utility bills for six months or so...at least here in Sweden, .but we got through it.
So now Russia has lost its most important buyer for both oil and natural gas forever. Well done, Europe.
No one likes to admit it but china is the most innovative and strongest player in a green transition, not cause they give a you know what about global warming but because fossil fuel dependence means limiting geo political independence. China has deep issues with their system, but That’s a lesson Europe and the US should whole
Heartedly take. Green funding is just as consequential as military funding for strategic flexibility
Not only their own independence, but cutting fuel demand has the nifty side benefit of hurting the US economy which is quite dependent on exporting oil and refined product.
The problem is pipelines are a tool during peacetime. There are Target during war.
If this were continues a couple more years, the pipelines out of Russia will almost certainly be cut by Ukrainian military operations

If power of Siberia 1 cost 50 billion dollars, it's very hard to see how #2 could cost $15 billion. They are about the same length
Edit: I see the estimate for POS1 was about $55bn, but WP said that 'to date' it cost about 1.1bn Ruble. ie around $20bn if I use 50 as the exchange rate. Which is obviously more like the $15bn claim for POS2.
Even so, the idea that it actually cost less than half the initial estimate, lacks credibility, as does every other statement coming from Russians, ever.
I suspect that China’s decision has less to do with current politics and more to do with long term goals of becoming self sufficient, as well as reducing carbon emissions.
The world is a wonderful place! It's good to get a good laugh in the morning.
