- White Stripes performing "We're Going to Be Friends", on the last great "Late night with Conan O'Brien". On February 20, 2009 “Late Night with Conan O'Brien” ended, with the "White Stripes" reuniting on the show to play “We're Going to Be Friends”, the band's last before they officially broke up two years later.
The band’s final performance before "Late night with Conan O'Brien" was 2 years prior at the "BankPlus Amphitheater at Snowden Grove", then known as "the Snowden Grove Amphitheater" in Southaven, Mississippi on July 31st, 2007. If not for the Incredible virile Power of Conan O'Brien this wonderful moment may never have happened. My favorite version of this song - Видеоклипы
Meg White! God bless you. I hope you’re okay, whatever you are doing, wherever you are.
Acute anxiety. Didn't die.
I hope Meg knows she's loved.
meg looks so happy here. like she knew this was gonna be the last time she performed live and knew it was a special way to go out
Jack seems so emotional. Maybe i knew that it was their last performance together ? This song is yet so simple and so powerful.
My greatest regret is I never saw the White Stripes perform live.
My greatest regret is that I didn't knew them before... Started listening to their songs like 5 months ago, but I love their songs so much.... o gosh😭😭
I saw the White stripes at a small venue in Akron Ohio my only regret is not seeing them more than one time in my lifetime hoping they get back together at some point, best show I've ever seen hands down
They’re just another band.
Saw them 3 times, unforgettable
I had tickets to see them on the Icky Thump tour that ended up getting cancelled, so I feel your pain. I don't know if I'd call it my greatest regret in life, but definitely musically, lol.
Jack and Meg are among the best things that happened to rock n roll in the 2000s
Hard to watch cuz of the emotion. Jack looks like he’s about to cry the whole time. He knows this is probably the end of the stripes and it’s tearing him up inside and out, during the song.
White Stripes and Nirvana had fun doing it raw and "wrong" ... The beauty of it was that it always sounded "imperfectly great"!
Yeah I kind of disagree walk hurtwood go off kilter once in awhile they were one of the tightest live bands I've ever seen. And Kurt would always bring his A-game. It's one thing to do your own thing it's another thing to Absolute you butcher your own song like this
Spot on that man.Always sounds beautiful when it's a bit of a mess.
@@el34glo59 My brother in christ. Kurt butchered their performances on purpose fairly often. Smells like teen spirit live at reading? Top of the pops? Come as You Are live in holland? The whole Buenos Aires show in 92? Do your research.
About the Buenos Aires concert, incase you're interested:
"When we played Buenos Aires, we brought this all-girl band over from Portland called Calamity Jane,” Kurt recalled. “During their entire set, the whole audience-it was a huge show with like sixty thousand people-was throwing money and everything out of their pockets, mud and rocks, just pelting them. Eventually the girls stormed off crying. It was terrible, one of the worst things I’ve ever seen, such a mass of sexism all at once. Krist, knowing my attitude about things like that, tried to talk me out of at least setting myself on fire or refusing to play. We ended up having fun, laughing at them (the audience). Before every song, I’d play the intro to ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ and then stop. They didn’t realize that we were protesting against what they’d done. We played for about forty minutes, and most of the songs were off Incesticide, so they didn’t recognize anything. We wound up playing the secret noise song (‘Endless, Nameless’) that’s at the end of Nevermind, and because we were so in a rage and were just so pissed off about this whole situation, that song and whole set were one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had.”
@@ok9908 Yeah I'm fully aware of Kurt butchering songs once and while. Reading, Smells like teen spirit is a terrible example. Kurt did that, in the beginning as a response to someone in the media saying they stole the riff from more than a feeling lol. He then proceeded to crush the rest of the song.
I grew up to Nirvana. They're my favorite band of all time. They were one also of the best live bands of all time. IDC if Kurt butchered songs once and awhile. Top of the pops was also in response to them trying to make them use a recording instead of playing live. Kurt usually had a reason if he was screwing around
They were still one of the tightest live bands I've ever seen.
@@el34glo59 if that's the case, then surely you can understand Jack White putting his emotions before the musical "quality" of this performance. He probably felt like this was going to be their last performance, wich it was. If you understand that, then it makes total sense. Nirvana is a hard one to top, lets not lie to ourselves here - Even when they butchered their sets.
Also a fun fact: right before this performance, Jack had to show Meg how to play a G-chord on the guitar 💀
Such an emotional performance. Jack and Meg bearing their souls for us all. It's heartbreakingly sweet and I'm so glad Conan was able to pull this off. Thank you!
This was a horrible version 😮 to each is their own
@@kane6529 your mom's a horrible version.
@@kane6529 didn't say it was good... but 'emotional' . I don't even know if I'd claim it that :/ yay to see em tho
@@kane6529 I love this version the best!
it is painful to see that Jack is stretching the song, trying to make it last a little bit more, before saying goodbye.
This video makes both very happy and vey sad every time. I miss The White Stripes so much...
peace and love White Stripes
I should have gone to see them live when they were together.
I saw them once in the early 2000s at the Roxy in Boston. Amazing show!
Depressing. I remember when they disbanded in 2011 and am somehow only hearing this now. Good song, sad moment in time.
It definitely didn’t sound polished, but the rawness of the audio plus the circumstances of the performance made it enjoyable to watch for me
I agree
Cause he was. If was a miracle that Conan was able to get letterman’s show.
Conan dedicated his life to bringing joy to people. It was the end of an amazing chapter in his life. The white stripes knew it too and played their asses off to him.
What an amazing send off to not only the stripes but to conan too.
Amazing!
2:56 Jack looks so emotional
they are such talented musicians who write profound songs about deep issues. The best singer/songwriters of the 21st century!
Fun fact: in his words conan O'Brien said that Jack taught meg how to play a g chord minutes before the show started, meg probably didn't know how to play guitar.
she still doesnt. props for trying. hope she is well.
@@mikeohagan2206 it did works for the occasion, at least
I came here from the Wikipedia page. Oh my. Tear in my eye.
I never heard this song it's a fuckin masterpiece
The normal version is SO much better.
thats why i love jack
He sounds like he's about to cry.
Excellent
It sure is excellent.
It sure is emotional and perfect for the occasion.
They sure are missed !!!!!!!!!
Sweet
It’s 2023. Every time I saw Jack on TV I would yell out… Comb your hair, comb your hair. He finally did I knew he was gorgeous underneath all that mess. And, the blue color makes it even more hot and sexy.
Epic
Thank you Anita...........
Not much footage from July 31st out there! Unless you could point me in a better direction
Sorry, no idea, not much out there. I jones for this version of the song at times, reminds me of a good dog I lost for some reason, the passion at the end from Jack maybe. I forgot I recorded the last Conan, found it while going through junk to make room, figured the world could use a little awesome right now, I know I can. Thank you

I thought the performance was pretty sweet
wow
I think is is very influenced by Jack's friend Bob Dylan, who often does radically deconstructed versions of his classics in concert. I personally love it.
I'm about to cover a simplified version of this song with my 6 year old students. Me playing guitar, my teaching partner on piano and the kids singing. I'm hoping to upload the audio when it's done, if not, I shall perform with my son and upload that.
Sounds fun
@@anitaschvitz9749 It should be! It's part of an end-of-year (Japanese school year is from April) performance. We will also be doing a production of Encanto and playing Mickey Mouse March, the kids on melodica.
I hope to see it
@@anitaschvitz9749 If I remember, I'll post a link here!
No link yet, still in the editing process. But it will be here soon!
Damn, but I have done got old. Hoist a glass to the 90s and the times since then.
Cheers!
Life is strange and uncertain.. They fell apart like angel food cake in a rainstorm...He floated, she dissentegrated, going her way way...🎩🤔💔
Meg playing that goddamn Airliner. Hope you are well.
Meg gotta have learned just the G and C9 chords off stage just seconds before this performance. Definitely Jack avant-gardening still. It’s so bad it’s genius.
Their aesthetic has always been "sweet and sincere young children" and it's both endearing and disturbing.
No it’s just bad !
What was that??
This is what music is. Raw, human, flawed.
I love today's music but it's as far from the true sense of music as you can get. Music is about bringing people together in celebration.
It's amazing, but there's no soul in most modern music.
This inspires me to play guitar for the fun of playing a song and creating something of my own, for that alone, I love it.
❤️❤️❤️
Jack White is Jimmy Hendrix
jeebus jack looks young. well so does meg. but even more so - jack.
I believe either this year or next year (2023/'24) will be the first year of eligibility for Jack and Meg to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame
it's this year and they were nominated, wich is RARE in a band's first year of eligibility (so i heard). They didn't win the vote but it's still crazy that they were nominated. Next year hopefully!
@@ok9908: Frankly, as big of a WS fan as I am, the R&RHoF nominating committee needs to work on the backlog of definitely deserving artists and bands that, for whatever the reason, have perennially been snubbed -- like fellow Detroiters/Michiganders: Grand Funk Railroad; and MC-5, as but two such examples. Do right by these artists and bands while some of their members are still alive and able to attend an hours-long public event, health-wise
@@shruggzdastr8-facedclown I don't know those bands but i'll definitely look into them now. Though I find it crazy how Joy Division, one of the most influential bands of all time is only being inducted this year. And it's also poor timing with the whole Peter Hook situation. The White Stripes can definitely wait some more years to be inducted but my selfish side just wants to see it already lol.
It would definitely be 1000x more interesting than a Joy Divison/New Order induction, as Ian Curtis obviously won't be there and now Peter Hook also probably won't be there. It's basically a cover band. So i'd have much preferred a WS reunion instead but i do understand why it is why it is.
@@ok9908: What's up with Hookie? Is he in bad health at the moment, or did I miss the news that he died recently?
About the two bands that I mentioned above: GFR was a psychedelic '60s/'70s classic rock band from Flint, Mi. (classically considered a power-trio with Mark Farner on guitar and lead vox, Mel Schacher on bass, and Don Brewer on drums, but they did also have an organist for a spell) whose claim to fame is breaking the Beatles' Shea Stadium attendance record (song highlights include: "We're An American Band"; "I'm Your Captain/Coming Home"; Inside Looking Out"; among many others); MC-5 were a quintet from Detroit with Rob Tyner on l.v.; the guitar tandem of Wayne Kramer and Fred "Sonic" Smith; and a bassist and drummer whose names escape me at this moment (song highlights include: "Kick Out The Jams"; "Black To Comm"; "Motor City Is Burning"; "Ramblin' Rose"*; and many others), and their claim to fame/infamy is being the only band to show-up and play a Civil Rights/Vietnam War protest concert outside of the 1968 Democratic Party Convention in Chicago -- style-wise, while not technically a true punk rock band, their sound could be considered a bridge between the psychedelic rock of the '60s and what would become punk as the '60s waned and the '70s dawned
(*lead vox on this cover sung by Kramer)
@@shruggzdastr8-facedclown I had no idea about those bands and they're definitely an aquired taste. I put the songs you listed into a playlist and I'll keep listening.
And about Hooky- I think i misread an article right before i wrote my original comment lol. Apparently the feud between him and the rest of New Order was about 15 years ago (?). I misunderstood and thought this was unfolding now. He'll definitely show up to the induction.
Tasty
That sounded rough
traded a red beer for this
Both loaded
Omg... This is literally the saddest thing I've ever seen... This was literally watching them die, Not individually but together... I didn't know this was their last performance but Immediately I had to find out if it was because that's exactly what it seems like it's just so freaking sad... Meg is a freaking Saint. Jack you fool ... All you had to do was Say the word... Yeah she knew you never would and we knew you never would because You had too much to do Too much to prove, ButEven if it turns out to be worth it to us it was never worth it... You'll never find that kind of love...
❤️🤍❤️🤍
Is there a better version of this?
Type it into the search bar. Song was recently on rick and morty
Cut them some slack. they both know it's all over, the White Stripes are done, and it's sad for everyone...
God, this has always been so hard to watch.
Meg plays guitar!
Just as bad as she plays drums
@@dildonicplagueHey, at least it actually worked with TWS. Her simplistic drumming style worked with Jacks crazy guitar shenanigans, I get if you don't like her drumming.
Side note: Jack was teaching Meg the certain chords last minute before their final performance.
add the drum too!
I like this better than the “normal” version!
GREAT HEART FELT FINAL WHITE STRIPS PERFORMANCE ON THE Last Conan show...2 history's 1 Stone...Long LIVE Rock, I Need it Every Nite!!!
Yes
Two ends converging and so few get it
This version is perfect. Obviously none of you know the true meaning of this band or the story behind the performance. Jack and Meg aren’t perfect, but they can put on a damn good genuine performance
None of us? That's pretentious.

Jack White is one of the best guitarists of all time and he is a musical genius
😳
I'd like to produce a Meg White album. I think it would be a surprisingly good project.
I don't think she works with incel perverts. Good luck though.
@@bobert6523 I don't really understand the context of your random weirdo comment but whatever kid. LOL
I can't speculate as to the reason why, but I share the general commenter opinion that this performance does not sound good.
Warum kann's nicht perfekt sein? Weil die Whitestripes es nicht nötig hatten/ haben und leider nicht werden. Kommt runter oder macht es besser! 🙏😎🤘
It’s the cosplayer dude from death stranding 💀
Real fame is when you fart into the mic and everybody is wooing.
A fart would’ve been a lot easier on my ears. I’ve played professionally for 30 years and this is one of the absolute worst things I’ve ever witnessed. Years ago I read an interview with this moron and he had some pretty nasty things to say about SRV. Something about him being not that great and way overrated. Apparently these two are paint chips as kids.
I have no problem with this…I am not a musician either.
Well, you know the old saying… if ua don’t have something nice to say…
No, what do they say about UA's?
I always thought these two reminded me of some goofy sketch you'd see on SNL with Will Ferrell. People praising these two as some kind of game changers are trying to be too cool for their own good.
Lots of Justin Bieber videos to watch young lady. I wish you success in your journey
No.
I love the original studio version of this, and I thought it was awesome seeing Meg up there but dude; that was rough. I don't know if I should defend his terrible singing and just embrace it and enjoy the experience, or talk the most vicious smack of my life. My brain is like broken in half trying to decide.
You can talk all the smack you want, but you can't bring up anything valid against this performance. This band was always about expression over perfection. Take a look at the lyrics of the song, assess the situation that Jack was in at the time and then rewatch it. At this point, the White Stripes was already pretty much split-up and Jack lost all contact with Meg after this performance.
It's not one of those White Stripes performances that i'll be rewatching a lot but there are plenty of those out there. Let this one be special.
their NOT GOING TO BE FRIENDS
That was a ROUGH version of "We're Going to Be Friends". Ugh
It wasn’t supposed to be good it turned out this way because just about everyone there was emotional about Conan and tws last show
The best thing that can be said about this version is that Meg is better on the drums...
Bro, you don't have to be down.
Two people sang a song for friends (including you and me)
✌️
You are correct my friend, there is already enough negative energy in this world. Thanks for the reminder... @@dantelles5714

That really sucked!
It's a great song, but this is a horrible version!
true, most of the time the studio versions are where its at with the white stripes
@@mr.moustache9891 LOL - I believe it!
Then you don’t know Jack as a performer. This was the final white stripes performance period, so every imperfection in jack’s vocals is his voice cracking because he’s holding back tears. I think he knew they would never return so he sang with every emotion in his heart. He didn’t care about perfection, he just cared that people were listening
@@rikkifknrobin Thanks for explaining. I do love the song and the original recorded version.
It's very different from the original. Not like it's a poor performance but they changed the tone of the song and I wasn't a fan of this, personally.
This is a good example of when you drown in your own sense of cool. God, this was an awful performance.
Thankyou for calling it as it is - What a load of horse 💩💩💩💩
Wholeheartedly agree! I’m a fan of their music but this was god awful sounded like the guitars were out of tune vocals just atrociously pitchy! I get raw and unpolished but this was not that it was just plain bad

You only need to have ears. You don't need to know a guy to know a guy.🤔
@@ThunderboltWisdomSo you don't know jack? A lot of things to take into consideration. Conan having helped the White stripes so much from the beginning, coming to an end. Meg and Jack hadn't played together for a couple of years and would never play together again, but for Conan, the man that helped them so much? They did it one more time, in spite of whatever conflict they were experiencing. A lot of raw emotions coming to a head that night. Jack and Meg knew it was the last time that the White stripes would ever be. He slowed the pace down from it's jaunty, fresh faced child excited for life pace, to reflect two very important things in Jacks life coming to an end. Ears are great, but a brain can give context to what the ears are hearing and give different meaning to what's heard. My dog had died not long before this night and and the pain I felt recognized the pain he felt for what it was. Maybe pain is required to appreciate this song in this form.
What was awful about it ?
@@anitaschvitz9749 As Bob Dylan says, a song walks by itself. Live performance is a bit different, but still the song should walk by itself. It sounds like you're bringing a lot of unnecessary things to the table here, a lot of subjective personal stuff. I'M TALKING ABOUT WHAT I HEARD. If that's alright with you! I've listened to a shed load of live White Stripes, and their albums and Jack's solo stuff, and this was godawful for the White Stripes. But hey, don't let another person having an opinion stop you from giving your lectures.
This might be worst thing I’ve ever seen or heard
Terrible. Sorry guys
I’m done with this! Reunite, Jack & Meg! Bring back The White Stripes now!!!!

The white stripes mark the beginning of mediocrity in music. The past 25 years continues to disappoint.
