Winston isn't completely wrong lmao. Alex was the first one to take responsibility about Hannah. He always defended poor Clay to his asshole friends in s1. He let Justin in when he was homeless in s1 and saved his life in s2. He was the biggest emotional support for Jess after her rape. He befriended and protected Tyler before anyone else did. He helped Zach get out of his self-destructive spiral. He helped charlie after the riot. Alex always seemed like an 'action speaks louder than words' type guy to me, and that is why he is so rude when he talks but has probably helped most number of people in the show (after Clay) despite being one of the most damaged characters of the show- he deals with most number of hot-button issues after Justin I think? Self-destruction, substance abuse, severe physical and mental illness, guilt, grief- Just my opinion tho.
