    This show was on December 21st 2013 the day after Su-metal's 16th birthday. It was called Legend of 1997 in honor of her birth year.🦊🤘

    Excellent first reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Galaxy. This was just the lead singer Su-metal celebrating her 16th birthday with her two best friends Yuimetal and Moametal (they were 14).
    Su-metal was born in 1997 - she is the legend - and this was at the Legend 1997 concert on 21st December 2013, the day after her birthday - she will be 25 in a couple of days time. They actually formed in 2010 when Su was 12, Yui and Moa were both 11.
    I will have to split my explanation up as the last couple of times I tried to post it all as one comment it disappeared.
    This one was all about the visuals and the performance. 'BABYMETAL Death' was the first track on the first album and was most often used as the show opener (without the crucifixion) - it is the perfect introduction - that is what the lyrics are:-
    "B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L Death Death Death Death Death Death. Su-metal death. Yuimetal death. Moametal death. BABYMETAL death. Death Death Death Death Death Death."
    It is a play on words. There is no 'TH' sound in Japanese, so to a Japanese speaker the English word death sounds like desu (the U is silent) spoken with a slight lisp. Desu means "To be - I am - you are - we are - it is" etc ... so in Japan you might introduce yourself as "EnterTheCronic desu" (We are EnterTheCronic).
    to be continued below

    • @Grington300
      @Grington300 Год назад +18

      There is an English translation of the intro video in the description which would have helped a bit (perhaps) with understanding what was happening:
      "Legend 1997.
      It is told that receiving the legendary neck brace from the god of Metal,
      she shall abandon her human life and be reborn as a goddess.
      The bloodline which has been passed down from ancient times
      is destined to be the guide, boarding the ark of time.
      The apocalypse is prophesied
      DOOMSDAY comes
      There remains ... little time ..."

      @Grington300 Год назад +16

      There can't be many bands who would crucify their lead singer on stage to celebrate her 16th birthday (as I said earlier Legend 1997 was the title of the show celebrating her 16th birthday in December 2013).
      Basically this show was the final step in BABYMETAL transitioning from Idol group sub-unit (it had this narrative running all the way through and even started with a lip-synced dance remix of their song 'Headbanger') to independent metal band - it was also Su-metal's final step in her transition from J-Pop Idol - she was sacrificing her human existence and life as Suzuka Nakamoto, a J-Pop Idol, to be reborn as Su-metal, a Metal Goddess chosen to lead the Metal Resistance.

    • @Grington300
      @Grington300 Год назад +16

      All they were doing throughout the song was introducing themselves by name and introducing BABYMETAL by name - and 'death' is just the sort of thing you'd expect to be chanted by any self respecting metal band and their audience while the lead singer is crucified.
      There were a couple of homages in this performance too. The opening drum riff is an homage to Metallica's 'One' and the statue crumbling at the end pays homage to Metallica's Justice For All tour of 1989 where they also had a statue (Lady Justice) crumble at the end of their shows. The neck brace is a tribute to X Japan drummer/pianist/songwriter/composer Yoshiki who damaged his neck so badly headbanging that he had to wear a neck brace a lot of the time, especially when performing.
      On special occasions 'BABYMETAL Death' was used later in the show - it was the finale here at Legend 1997, the show celebrating Su-metal's 16th birthday ... and they only crucify Su on special occasions. So far that has happened 5 times (plus a couple more in the shows at the Budokan they played early last year), the last before those was at Legend S, Baptism XX in December 2017 to help her celebrate her 20th birthday - and that one had extra flames.

    • @Grington300
      @Grington300 Год назад +14

      The instrumentalists are called the Kami Band (kami means god or spirit, so they are the gods of guitar bass and drums summoned from the dead to support BABYMETAL in all live shows ... this was the last show where they only played the encores and became the full time support for all live shows from their next big shows at the Budokan in Tokyo in March 2014).
      At Legend 1997 they were Mikio Fujioka (RIP January 2018) and Leda Cygnus on guitars, BOH on bass and Hideki Aoyama on drums. They are all male.
      If you see the band wearing skeleton suits that is not the Kami Band - BABYMETAL could not always afford a live band and in the early days they sang live while the guys in skeleton suits (Babybones) mimed the instrumentals to a pre-recorded backing track.
      For another reaction try 'Headbanger' live at the same show, Legend 1997. It was two songs before this. Look on the abr metal or gans tomasz channels for the better quality videos for that performance.

    Babymetal Death @ Legend 1997 is kind of a wild way to be introduced to Babymetal. Its a great fun spectacle, but it doesn't showcase what makes Babymetal so unique - Su-metal's soprano vocals, and their dance routines and costumes.
    Some songs that better showcase what Babymetal is about are: Headbangerrr!!!, Megitsune, Road of Resistance, Karate, Syncopation, Yava!

    The genre BABYMETAL invented is called Kawaii Metal. This song was usually their opener where they introduce themselves, but at the Legend 1997 (in 2013) they celebrated Su-metal's 16th birthday by crucifying her in order for her to be reborn as a metal goddess. There's a fair bit of lore behind everything they do. Welcome to the foxhole 🦊🤘#notacult

    Thanks for this reaction, Babymetal Death as the first is a fun way to do introduction at multiple levels. 🙂
    Babymetal is amazing live, they know how to deliver a show. Not just on the big stage as you've seen, but also on a smaller stage without all the bells and whistles around them (like a festival or as support act). As others have mentioned, they started in 2010. Babymetal is still active. 4th album early next year. They are Japan's maybe biggest music export at the moment. They break records overseas. For example the albums have reached highest ever for Japanese artist in multiple countries and their second album was highest charting Japanese album in the US Billboard (one of the hardest countries for a foreign artist to break into) in over 50 years. And third album reached #1 on the rock/metal charts of billboard, first for anyone from Asia.

    WOW...what a way to get introduced to Babymetal! The "Legend 1997" is in reference to the lead singers (Su Metal) birth year and this concert was in celebration of her 16th Birthday. In the past "Death" was used as the first song they played at concerts to introduce themselves and hype the crowd up (mission accomplished!)...the crucifixion part was done specifically, in this case, to represent Su Metal's ascension to a Metal Goddess. They have officially been around since 2010 and they are releasing another album in March (two singles have already been dropped). Others will provide much more detail, I am sure! For a next listen I would suggest either "Road of Resistance" Live in Japan - ruclips.net/video/zTEYUFgLveY/видео.html or "Headbanger" from the same Legend 1997 show as "Death" - ruclips.net/video/YjjWZpf_jSs/видео.html. "Headbanger" is about a 15 year old going to her first metal concert. On a side note...Live is almost always better, with the exception of "Megitsune" (also highly recommended) - ruclips.net/video/cK3NMZAUKGw/видео.html, which is a great studio video. Anyway, looking forward to the next!

    Legend 1997 Apocalypse is a concert celebrating Su-Metal aka Suzuka Nakamoto 16th Birthday 🎉(Seitansai) which took place in Makuhari Messe in Chiba prefecture.
    Metallic Fans will notice the opening riffs which derived from Metallica song "ONE" which pays homage to Metallica.
    Live:-
    Death Legend 1999 & 1997 Apocalypse (stylized as LIVE~LEGEND 1999&1997 APOCALYPSE) is the second live video release by the Japanese heavy metal band Babymetal. The album contains live footage of two shows, entitled Legend "1999" and Legend "1997" (named after birth years of the members of Babymetal), performed in Japan in 2013. It was released in 2-disc DVD and Blu-ray formats on October 29, 2014.
    Live: Legend 1999 & 1997 Apocalypse:,
    Released: October 29, 2014.

    Babymetal video chronology Live:,
    Legend I, D, Z Apocalypse (2013).
    Live: Legend 1999 & 1997 Apocalypse (2014).
    Live at Budokan: Red Night & Black Night Apocalypse (2015).
    The Destruction Of The Statue is similar to Metallica Justice for All live concert in Mexico City, Mexico 🇲🇽.
    The Japanese word "desu" (です) is a copula (= to be). The Eastern Japanese almost drop "u" of this word, so the word "desu/des" sounds like "death". And someone started writing "DEATH" instead of "です" (desu). It makes sense only where the Japanese word "desu" is expected to come. The title "BABYMETAL DEATH" means only "We are BABYMETAL." No relation to the death itself.
    I'm not sure of its origin, but I saw long before such a character as a vampire or a death metal singer in a comic and all his "です" (desu) were replaced with "DEATH" to emphasize his character. With such an air, it works well. Without such an air, it probably doesn't work.
    There is a genre named "Death Metal". The sound of this tune seems to fall within that genre, and the lyric writer may have put many "DEATH"s to emphasize the Death-Metal-ness. It might be alright to use many "DEATH"s without thinking of death if some of Death Metal bands also chose their style just to differentiate themselves rather than driven by the feeling about death. But I don't know the Death Metal well.
    MAKUHARI MESSE:-
    Makuhari Messe (幕張メッセ) is a Japanese convention center outside Tokyo, located in the Mihama-ku ward of Chiba city, in the northwest corner of Chiba prefecture. Designed by Fumihiko Maki, it is accessible by Tokyo's commuter rail system. Makuhari is the name of the area, and Messe is a German language word meaning "trade fair".
    •Owner: Makuhari Messe, Inc.
    •Opened: 9 October 1989.
    •Expanded: October 1997.
    •Classroom-style seating: 304 (International Conference Room).
    •Banquet/ballroom: 1,600 (Convention Hall).
    •Theatre seating: 7,860 (Makuhari Event Hall).
    Makuhari Messe is close to Tokyo Disney Resort in Urayasu, and to Chiba prefecture's black sand beaches. It is accessible from Kaihimmakuhari station on the Keiyō Line of East Japan Railway Company (JR East). The center is the host of the annual Tokyo Auto Salon (modified car show, in January), the biennial Tokyo Motor Show (in October), the annual Tokyo Game Show (video game hardware and software exhibition, in September), the annual Jump Festa (manga, anime, and video game exposition, in December), and the biannual Wonder Festival (toys, scale figures, and garage kits exposition, in February and July). The venue was host to several Nintendo Space World events.
    It will be the venue for certain sports during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

    If you understand the background of this song and some of the visual elements, it is actually pretty tongue-in-cheek. This is usually performed as an introduction at the beginning of the show, as what they are actually saying "I am Su-metal" ... "I am Yui-metal" ... "I am Moametal" ... "We are Babymetal!" The Japanese word "desu," which is pronounced almost identical to "death" actually means "I am" or "we are." With the tendency of Western listeners to hear "death" whenever they say "desu," they decided to weave it into their lore, which includes in part Su-metal being sacrificed as a normal girl and being resurrected as a goddess of metal. The Mary statue has a dual purpose. First, in the lore, Su-metal is portrayed as very pure and it is hinted that she comes from the bloodline of Mary (part of what the DNA strands mean in the intro). It is also a reference to Metallica, which was the first metal band the girls saw live. Metallica toppled the Lady Justice statue at the end of their shows during that tour, so the toppling of the Mary statue is a tribute to that. The humorous tongue-in-cheek elements are woven nicely into the fictional lore of Babymetal, though it can be confusing to follow the storyline.

    The DOOMSDAY. Towards it,
    There remains... little time.."
    Basically this show was the final step in BABYMETAL transitioning from Idol group sub-unit to independent metal band - it was also Su-metal's final step in her transition from J-Pop Idol - she was sacrificing her human existence and life as Suzuka Nakamoto the J-Pop Idol to be reborn as Su-metal the Metal Goddess chosen to lead the Metal Resistance.
    If you ask the girls who is their musical influence, they will say with a big smile METALLICA. Metallica showed them how amazing metal music can be, and the girls respect them a lot. If you google METALLICA & BABYMETAL you will see some cool pics of them together and the time BABYMETAL opened up for METALLICA.
    BABYMETAL dreamed of someday opening up for the legendary metal group Metallica that dream came true at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. As one might expect from the trio, they absolutely rocked the stage! Kicking off Metallica's Seoul show on January 11, 2017, BABYMETAL opened the night with an explosive 6-song set.
    Did you catch the references to METALLICA IN THIS VIDEO?

    BABYMETAL like theatrics, but please don't expect all of their music to be like this. They cover a very wide spectrum of various Metal subgenres fused with all sorts of other musical genres. You'll find Reggae, Hip Hop, Ska, EDM, Dubstep, Waltz and more among their influences, and often it's very playful and light-headed - unlike what you have just seen, at least at first glance. This performance marks Su's (the lead singer) transition from human to Metal goddess.
    For contrast, I'd like to recommend "Megitsune" as a more "typical" BABYMETAL song (if there is such a thing). As you may have guessed by now, live performances is where they shine, but in the case of Megitsune, the official music video is pretty cool as well.

    Nice reaction. Nobody is ready for death. Especially not Babymetal death. Since Babymetal hit the international scene around 2013-14. It made the world turn their heads and say WTH is going on in Japan. Turns out it's a lot, musically speaking. Next as you've been told 1997 is Su-metals birth year. And it's good to talk about that right now since in Japan it's already the 20th. Which means it's Su's 25th birthday. Happy Birthday Su-metal. We missed out on a big birthday concert this year. Babymetals first live concert will be at the end of January next year. So just over a month from now. Yeah!!! Babymetal returns to performing live and suddenly all seems right in the world for a moment. Next up as heavy as that performance was. Lyrically all they're saying is I'm Su, I'm Yui and I'm Moa, B A B Y M E T A L. Babymetal. Amazing how fun that can be. The song was usually used at the start of their shows as a way of introducing themselves to the audience. But here they used it to end the show. With some great tributes to bands that came before them. Musically they use a riff in there that is a reminder of the song One by Metallica. The statue in the back (not the Mother) is like the statue Metallica used during the And Justice For all tour. which would break at the end of the show. Then we have the neck brace which is a tribute to X Japan which might be the biggest Japanese metal band until Babymetal came around on the international scene anyway. X Japans drummer broke his neck from headbanging and had to wear a brace. As all this heaviness is going on. Babymetal still find a way to be Kawaii. Yui and Moa giggle when they go to put the next brace on. And then Moa fixes Su's hair because you have to look good when we sacrifice you. The whole concert told the story of Babymetal in a way. Every song and performance starting off with their Jpop roots and going into their metal kawaii era. The statue represented Suzuka Nakamoto. Su-metal actual name. She gave up that life and more so the Jpop life. which most experts feel that all the members of Babymetal would have had very successful careers in. Suzuka Nakamoto breaks away. And she is Su-metal forever more. that sums up what you just watched. And that's how Su-metal celebrated her 16th birthday. Yup most folks are just happy with a cake and good friends. Su throws a concert and sacrifices herself. Showing from those early days that Babymetal was going to be different. And still are.

    Not sure if it's your first reaction to them but it's a very strange one to do first and is almost certain to be misunderstood on a lot of levels - but these group are breathtakingly good with nearly every "normal" (😏) track being horribly catchy and hypnotic - they are a show to be watched tbh. Do watch more - this whole show is wonderful. "97" refers to the lead singers birthdate and not the concert date btw - I THINK she was 15 here?? And yes - it is theatre and more imo - I love to watch way more than just listen to them. GREAT reaction to what could be a problematic first track. Try Heabbanger from the same concert - they are verry young here though and have been around for 10 years now. If you do watch Headbanger (2 versions in the show I think first is EDM type but not often seen) you may (if you're fast) notice the words "happy Birthday" written across the side of one of the guitarists head even :D

    In case you didn't know, according to the mythos, Babymetal are dead and only come to life when summoned to the stage by the Fox God. That is what Babymetal Death is about. Also, if you turn the sound off and watch Babymetal Death, they are actually warming up their bodies for the strenuous exercise of the remainder of the concert.
