His talent was much much bigger than the borders of Greece. He played in on club only of the Greek premier league (Iraklis) which was not even one of the top ones. He could not play for the National team. He had opportunities to join large European clubs but he turned them all down. He was a very humble player despite his incredible talent.
This is perhaps why so little is known for this phenomenal player. For us Greeks growing up and watching him play every Sunday it was a treat, every week we were in awe of what he would do on the pitch.

As you said he couldn't play for his national team because the Soviet Union used him already for the U21 , the Olympic team and the National team ...
He came to Greece , 20years old using some Soviet law for people with other nationality returning to their home countries, because at that time, No one could go out of the Soviet Union in that age !
Sad story .... He signed a contract with Iraklis ( Hercules) for just 2 Years But The contract was for 10 !!! ...what he didn't knew ! ( according to the Greek football law )
So actually he was tied with this team for ...life ... ! ....in a middle team in Greece , never been qualified to the big tournaments of Europe , so people didn't knew his existence ...
Some teams from Italy and Germany have heard about his skills and wanted him but Iraklis was not selling!
Today the Presidents of Iraklis are asking him for forgiveness for not giving him the opportunity to play in big teams in Europe ...
He was called to play with the world All Stars !!! Together with Beckenbauer / Kevin Keegan / Neskens etc ( all the top names of the times)
Finally a very sad story is that after he came to Greece , his former team ( pachtakor) had a airplane crash, where all his ex team lost their lives !
He was voted from the UEFA and the Greek football Association as the best Greek player of the last 50 years !
    Please excuse may bad English

All greeks would agree that this is by far the greatest player to ever play in the country. You hear stories from football fans back then that the whole country wanted to watch Iraklis matches just to witness Vasilis' brilliance. To this day he has the respect of everyone , it was just a shame that playing in a corrupt greek league (much more corrupt back then) did not give the chance to this great player and Iraklis team to win more silverware. It is said that many major clubs across Europe (such as Arsenal and Juventus) wanted to sign him but at the time the teams had total control of the transfers and could renew contracts one-way. I don't think any other team would let this man go so I don't believe Iraklis is at blame here, that's just how football was. In his interviews he has always expressed his regret of not joining a great European club but also his gratitude for the love he has received from the fans of Iraklis and all of Greece.

  • @captainzeppos
    @captainzeppos Год назад

If such a talent existed in today's era, the whole world would be talking about him. Back in the late 70s and 80s though, things were much different. Vasja (as is his nickname because of his half-Soviet origins) signed an initial 2-year contract with Iraklis (a mediocre Greek team at best) without even knowing that the contract would bind him for 10 years against his will. There was no such thing as free agency at that time, so although he badly wanted to leave, the team was not willing to sell him at any price because he was their main source of income as everyone wanted to pay tickets to see him (opponent fans included). 40-50 thousand spectators would go every Sunday to watch him play, many of whom were not even Iraklis supporters.
There are many first-hand stories from fans of that era, when Iraklis played away from home. As expected entire stadiums would be rooting for their team and against Iraklis, but when Vasja got control of the ball, everyone would suddenly go quiet and they would be whispering to each other "shhh, God has the ball now". Remember that revenue from TV rights was very small worldwide 40 years ago (much less in Greece) and teams depended mostly on tickets. There would have been a riot by Iraklis fans if team management had let him go. Even the fact that he signed with Iraklis instead of the biggest Greek football clubs (Olympiacos and Panathinaikos) was a story of its own. At that time, Soviet Union would not sell playes, period. The only way for someone to go play abroad was to have a dual ancestry (Vasja did as he was of both Greek and Soviet origin), so he was allowed to migrate back to his home country. This is what happened with Vasja, but neither Olympiacos nor Panathinaikos had understood the situation or wanted to get involved in the politics of that, so Iraklis ended up in grabbing the player and signing him for life.
So he stayed with them for the entirety of his career, mostly unwillingly. Even then he never let the team down and always gave his best. He managed to win the Greek Cup once (NOT the championship) in his first year with the team and that was the highlight of Iraklis' entire history before or after Vasja. It was the best he could achieve with that roster, which like I said was mediocre at best. Vasja elevated them to the next level but he still couldn't do more on his own, playing in horrible turfs most of the time. Just view the highlights to see how many times he'd dribble everyone, pass the ball to an open teammate and the latter would send the ball outside the stadium 90% of the time. It's as if you had Maradona playing with Division 2 Italian teammates instead of Napoli or Messi playing all his career in Tenerife instead of Barcelona. On top of that, for legal reasons outside Vasja's control he never had the opportunity to play with the Greek national team (with a couple of exceptions at the beginning of his career). That was because Vasja had played 6 times in his youth with Soviet Union youth and Olympic teams and FIFA at that time would not allow someone to swap national teams (nor did the always incompetent Greek Association try too hard to change FIFA's mind).
Several European clubs were willing to pay exorbitant transfer fees to get Vasja (Lazio, Porto, Arsenal, Stuttgart etc, even New York Cosmos). If he had the opportunity to play abroad (which was nearly unheard of at the time), he would have most definitely be a key player in the best clubs of the continent. It's as if there was a fantastic player from Algeria who'd migrate to France, but he'd be bound for the entirety of his career to Metz or Montpellier or worse, without playing for the national team. Very few outside France would be talking about Zidane now. This is what happened to Vasja, who probably had better skills than Zidane.

Just some brief historical information. Greek people from antiquity were living in areas Of Caucasus and other territories along the black sea for example. These Greek people the Pontic people were persecuted because they wanted to remain Greek and keep their religion. Chatzipanagis was one of those people they kept being relocated trying to find a country that would give them extradition papers to go to Greece. Many People got papers from Uzbekistan in his time of forceful relocations and extreme poverty and harshful conditions his talent was so great that the Soviets got him to play. However, for all Pontic Greeks the dream was to come back to the mother country and he did.

Excellent video..actually Vasilis Hatzipanagis or else VASIA was Cypriot from Achna and Makrasyka villages… his parents went to ussr and after to Greece! He was the first Greek player from the two who played to the all world all star team!second one is Antonis Nikopolidis, goalkeeper of national team 2004!
Real Madrid and Milan wanted VASIA to their roster but because of the contract which signed in Iraklis that time, he couldn’t go to other club!!

He couldn't play in the Greek national team but he couldn't play in a big European club also because back then he was commited to 12 year old contract with his team Iraklis (Hercules) and the club refused to sell him all that years

the most of the highlights are from the matches with the best teams in Greece ... panathinaikos(green) olympiakos(red and white) aek(yellow shirts and shorts) aris(rival in region of thessaloniki yellow top black shorts) paok (arch rival team in thessaloniki ) panionios ( blue-red in one era that panionios was in the top6 teams) larissa (the best team in 87-88 year took the championship white top bordeaux shorts ) levadiakos (a first leauge stady team) kalamaria (black and red now in lower divisions from thessaloniki as well)
Hatzipanagis was the best of the best.. but never quit his team for the money.. he stay faithfull soldier even panathinaikos aek and olympiakos wanted him like crazy that era..
and yes was the maradona of the balkans... not only Greece he was born in wrong era.. if he was born 20 years later he may was one of the best in the world in a great team (like real/ galacticos - barchelona in the same era )

I remember him very well, as he was playing when i was a teenager. Even though my team was a bigger club with better players, whenever this guy played against my team, he completely destroyed our defense. This guy was getting standing ovations from fans of other teams, all the time. He was magical.

every record in attendance in greek smaller teams are from this era against Iraklis. Teams that got 3-4 000 thousand tickets were moving to a bigger stadium for their game against Iraklis. Then the attendance went to 45 000 for one game.
