He was called "the man who could dribble everyone inside a phone booth" Love from Greece❤
Exactly 🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷
he actually has 26 corner goals. The fans in the stadium celebrated getting a corner more than getting a penalty when he was on the field.
6 όχι 26

I was blessed to see this man playing. No matter what team you support, it was a joy to see Vasia's skills. Maybe is the only player who loved from all the fans in Greece.
Thanks for recognizing one of the greatest football players that ever played the game.
Best greek player ever
The best Greek player ever. Α ρε Βάσια παιχταρά!
40 years ago, a journalist said, that his mother was a ball. The most important was that all the stadiums was sold out, to see this football player.
His talent was much much bigger than the borders of Greece. He played in on club only of the Greek premier league (Iraklis) which was not even one of the top ones. He could not play for the National team. He had opportunities to join large European clubs but he turned them all down. He was a very humble player despite his incredible talent.
This is perhaps why so little is known for this phenomenal player. For us Greeks growing up and watching him play every Sunday it was a treat, every week we were in awe of what he would do on the pitch.
One of the unknown GOATS
he did not turn them down. He was bound by some weird contract agreement to Iraklis FC and practically back in his playing days the clubs ''owned'' the players
@@aerodronics_showcase exactly. Mr. Theodoridis burned him.
IRAKLIS was going for the championship every year then!
IRAKLIS was and always will be one of the top clubs in Greece.STOP writing bullshit!!!

Phenomenal player !!!! Never thought that someone non Greek would show here in RUclips one video with him so i thank you very much for showing him and the Greek football of that era. I was born in 1969 and I have enjoyed him mainly in TV. My home town team of Olympiakos Pireas had a game against him and his team at the cup's final which despite my team lost it all the fans gave him a very warm stand ovation clapping constantly and shouting his name.
YES,MAN I HAVE SEEN HIM PLAY ON TV.I WAS 5-7 WHEN I SAW HIM BACK IN 1985-1987.PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER GREECE,FROM ANY TEAM,PAID TO SEE HIM PLAY.HE UNITED ALL GREEK FANS.HE WAS A PHENOMENON AND I DON'T REMEMBER IF HE HAD ANY CARDS AT ALL.HE IS A VERY KIND SOUL.VERY PATIENT AND HE IS TEACHING IN FOOTBALL ACADEMIES YOUNG KIDS.
Respect......... From thessaloniki
Thanks
As you said he couldn't play for his national team because the Soviet Union used him already for the U21 , the Olympic team and the National team ...
He came to Greece , 20years old using some Soviet law for people with other nationality returning to their home countries, because at that time, No one could go out of the Soviet Union in that age !
Sad story .... He signed a contract with Iraklis ( Hercules) for just 2 Years But The contract was for 10 !!! ...what he didn't knew ! ( according to the Greek football law )
So actually he was tied with this team for ...life ... ! ....in a middle team in Greece , never been qualified to the big tournaments of Europe , so people didn't knew his existence ...
Some teams from Italy and Germany have heard about his skills and wanted him but Iraklis was not selling!
Today the Presidents of Iraklis are asking him for forgiveness for not giving him the opportunity to play in big teams in Europe ...
He was called to play with the world All Stars !!! Together with Beckenbauer / Kevin Keegan / Neskens etc ( all the top names of the times)
Finally a very sad story is that after he came to Greece , his former team ( pachtakor) had a airplane crash, where all his ex team lost their lives !
He was voted from the UEFA and the Greek football Association as the best Greek player of the last 50 years !
Please excuse may bad English
Thanks for the great story. Your English is fine
Awesome summary!
Vasilis Hatzipanagis a ''living legend'' of Greek football and not only!!!
Ηe was a magician of football, they called him ''Nureyev'' of football for his amazing dribble!!!
He had earned the respect and the appreciation from all the fans of the teams here in Greece.
Such players are rare in today's football, ...so, respect to ''Vassia'', to a such a huge and unique player!!!
From a Panathinaikos fan.
Best Greek football ever! I don't think we will see something like that again ❤❤❤🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷☠️☠️☠️
The gretest player in the greatest club.❤
I was 4 years old when my father took me for my very first time to the game with him.I remember beeing on his shoulders and stiil couldn't see because of the crowd.45.000 IRAKLIS fans at this game and yes....Vasilis was playing!
Some of the best memories in my life with this player and this club.
Thanks for giving him the recognition he deserves outside of Greece.👍
Василис Хадзипанагис Пахтакор Ташкент и сборную СССР великий футболист
There’s not a lot of good footage of this guy it’s a shame he couldn’t be seen by the world one of the best ever
He was too good for the Greek League, he was cond into signing a fifteen year contract to play for Iraklis. A lot of big clubs wanted to sign him but because he signed that contract he was tied down for life
Here in Greece we call him the Greek Maradona
Hatzipanagis is a legend of the Greek football. For a country with not a rich football history, Greece was amazed with Vasilis skill. He was the Greek Maradona. My father used to say that Vasilis is 11 more players added to the pitch.
Most skillfull Greek player ever!
He played once at the WORLD ALL STARS team 22-7-1984 (3-1 win) versus Cosmos NY at New Jersey!
I am luky because I live in Greece and old enough to see that magic player durring many many matches. It was magic to see the fans of the opposing club to applaud him!!! We called him at Greece VASIA, that is his nickname until today
Iraklis was his fathers boyhood club, he was tainted that he couldn’t play for the Greek National team so he signed the contract in spite, but he regrets that move today. He is a very humble and liked person
Why couldn’t he play for the national team?? They said he’s born in Uzbekistan but I assume he’s of Greek descent because his name, shame he never rly did the rules must’ve been different back then.
Go and see again and again what he did in 04:00.... He was the Greek Maradona, truly....
The greatest player ever in Greece, loved from all fans!
You should have seen him playing my friend. We place him next to Maradona and Pele and people who don't know him they think we are crazy.
If he had played for Greek national team we would have lost him from some top European club but everybody would have known how great he was.
Why on earth couldn’t he play if he’s of Greek descent?
He was even better live..in todays world he would be up there with Mesi and Ronaldo
I am here, only for Vasilis ! 💙💙💙
Hatzipanagis has scoored 6 times from the corner
How the hell did you find out about Vasili??? Kudos!!!
He was a unique player - got to see him live only once.
I am Iraklis fan and I'm sorry that this phenomenal player hadn't the chance to move on a bigger club... He could be legend worldwide, now he is legend only in Greece....
As a greek I wish he could be in a better team couse iraklis was really small team I imagine him playing with Maradona in Barcelona
Back in the 80s I was a ball boy for my hometown football team (AEL FC/Larissa) and I had the opportunity to admire him a few times while playing against us. Top class player even for today. Unfortunately there are not many videos of him online. Very humble, professional, gave his all for the team. If there is any way to rank him he would have been in top 20 players worldwide of the last 20 years.
Bravo my friend, perfect video!!! 👍 👍 👍 👍
He was of greek descendance hence his first and last name. Thanks for uploading he was an immensely talented player

@@theosas5267 You can easily find information about the Hadji or Hatzi prefix on Greek last names and what it meant
To have seen him live you would understand why he would be the world's greatest footballer, consistently outstanding throughout every game, with rival fans flocking to see him, panathinaikos offered 120 million in 1981, maradona went to Naples in 1984 for around 30 million, the ultimate role model as a player and as a person, the entire greek nation including Cyprus where his father was born, pay him the ultimate respect , long live the football Nureyev
Criton P
He could have almost been killed his entire team were killed in a plane crash and he couldn’t make that trip, he goes to honour his team mates every time there is a memorial service for his team mates that were in the crash
All greeks would agree that this is by far the greatest player to ever play in the country. You hear stories from football fans back then that the whole country wanted to watch Iraklis matches just to witness Vasilis' brilliance. To this day he has the respect of everyone , it was just a shame that playing in a corrupt greek league (much more corrupt back then) did not give the chance to this great player and Iraklis team to win more silverware. It is said that many major clubs across Europe (such as Arsenal and Juventus) wanted to sign him but at the time the teams had total control of the transfers and could renew contracts one-way. I don't think any other team would let this man go so I don't believe Iraklis is at blame here, that's just how football was. In his interviews he has always expressed his regret of not joining a great European club but also his gratitude for the love he has received from the fans of Iraklis and all of Greece.
Best greek player
Well done man , good choice to react . I've seen him with my own eyes , he was unbelievable in technique , such a shame he didn't play for a big european team back then.
It's surprising to hear a commentator talk about long-gone, little-noticed talents who points out their talents and has such objective comments on his palette that it takes your breath away, refreshing! Bravo man!
Thanks 🙏 that’s the aim of this channel.
If such a talent existed in today's era, the whole world would be talking about him. Back in the late 70s and 80s though, things were much different. Vasja (as is his nickname because of his half-Soviet origins) signed an initial 2-year contract with Iraklis (a mediocre Greek team at best) without even knowing that the contract would bind him for 10 years against his will. There was no such thing as free agency at that time, so although he badly wanted to leave, the team was not willing to sell him at any price because he was their main source of income as everyone wanted to pay tickets to see him (opponent fans included). 40-50 thousand spectators would go every Sunday to watch him play, many of whom were not even Iraklis supporters.
There are many first-hand stories from fans of that era, when Iraklis played away from home. As expected entire stadiums would be rooting for their team and against Iraklis, but when Vasja got control of the ball, everyone would suddenly go quiet and they would be whispering to each other "shhh, God has the ball now". Remember that revenue from TV rights was very small worldwide 40 years ago (much less in Greece) and teams depended mostly on tickets. There would have been a riot by Iraklis fans if team management had let him go. Even the fact that he signed with Iraklis instead of the biggest Greek football clubs (Olympiacos and Panathinaikos) was a story of its own. At that time, Soviet Union would not sell playes, period. The only way for someone to go play abroad was to have a dual ancestry (Vasja did as he was of both Greek and Soviet origin), so he was allowed to migrate back to his home country. This is what happened with Vasja, but neither Olympiacos nor Panathinaikos had understood the situation or wanted to get involved in the politics of that, so Iraklis ended up in grabbing the player and signing him for life.
So he stayed with them for the entirety of his career, mostly unwillingly. Even then he never let the team down and always gave his best. He managed to win the Greek Cup once (NOT the championship) in his first year with the team and that was the highlight of Iraklis' entire history before or after Vasja. It was the best he could achieve with that roster, which like I said was mediocre at best. Vasja elevated them to the next level but he still couldn't do more on his own, playing in horrible turfs most of the time. Just view the highlights to see how many times he'd dribble everyone, pass the ball to an open teammate and the latter would send the ball outside the stadium 90% of the time. It's as if you had Maradona playing with Division 2 Italian teammates instead of Napoli or Messi playing all his career in Tenerife instead of Barcelona. On top of that, for legal reasons outside Vasja's control he never had the opportunity to play with the Greek national team (with a couple of exceptions at the beginning of his career). That was because Vasja had played 6 times in his youth with Soviet Union youth and Olympic teams and FIFA at that time would not allow someone to swap national teams (nor did the always incompetent Greek Association try too hard to change FIFA's mind).
Several European clubs were willing to pay exorbitant transfer fees to get Vasja (Lazio, Porto, Arsenal, Stuttgart etc, even New York Cosmos). If he had the opportunity to play abroad (which was nearly unheard of at the time), he would have most definitely be a key player in the best clubs of the continent. It's as if there was a fantastic player from Algeria who'd migrate to France, but he'd be bound for the entirety of his career to Metz or Montpellier or worse, without playing for the national team. Very few outside France would be talking about Zidane now. This is what happened to Vasja, who probably had better skills than Zidane.
I am from Greece and The team I support is HERCULES
I am from Greece. Hatzipanagis is a legendary football player for us. Ηe enjoyed the respect of all Greeks, regardless of which group everyone supports.
3:58 dribble of the century
There is a legendary quote about Vasilis (from rival opponent players against him):
The man he can dribble inside a phonebooth!
In Greece, the following 3 will be forever worshiped. Nick Galis, Vasilis Chatzipanagis and Rory Gallagher.
Just some brief historical information. Greek people from antiquity were living in areas Of Caucasus and other territories along the black sea for example. These Greek people the Pontic people were persecuted because they wanted to remain Greek and keep their religion. Chatzipanagis was one of those people they kept being relocated trying to find a country that would give them extradition papers to go to Greece. Many People got papers from Uzbekistan in his time of forceful relocations and extreme poverty and harshful conditions his talent was so great that the Soviets got him to play. However, for all Pontic Greeks the dream was to come back to the mother country and he did.
I'M AEK FAN BUT WHEN XATZIPANGIS PLAYED I FORGOT EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!! THE BEST PLAYER OF THR WORLD !!!!!!!

Very nice video. It is said that when he was on the offense, the people on the grandstands, were changing positions on the grandstands to get closer to Chatzipanagis's dribbles. And they were the opponents. I've seen Maradona play in the 1990 world cup in Italy live but i haven't seen him....:( What I know is that the poor quality videos don't do justice to the player....

Excellent video..actually Vasilis Hatzipanagis or else VASIA was Cypriot from Achna and Makrasyka villages… his parents went to ussr and after to Greece! He was the first Greek player from the two who played to the all world all star team!second one is Antonis Nikopolidis, goalkeeper of national team 2004!
Real Madrid and Milan wanted VASIA to their roster but because of the contract which signed in Iraklis that time, he couldn’t go to other club!!
He couldn't play in the Greek national team but he couldn't play in a big European club also because back then he was commited to 12 year old contract with his team Iraklis (Hercules) and the club refused to sell him all that years
His father was from Cyprus, immigrated to USSR!

Hatzipanagis was the best of the best.. but never quit his team for the money.. he stay faithfull soldier even panathinaikos aek and olympiakos wanted him like crazy that era..
