I think they got Cordelia on Angel to get Buffy fans watching this spin-off and to not waste a good character. She's not that close to the gang, she always talked about leaving Sunnydale so it makes perfect sense for her to be in Angel if she were to leave BTVS, this is the best pairing. It allows for both of these characters to be more fleshed out. They are kind of opposites who challenge each other so it works.

I guess the subscribers dropped the ball. A lot of times, reactors are warned not to watch the opening credits so that seeing Cordelia at the party is a surprise.

We definitely knew ahead of time Charisma was going to the Angel Spinoff. I remember at the end of season 3 of Buffy back in 1999 we had already heard Cordelia was going to Angel and another supporting character would be made a regular on Buffy and they would be going to college. So we spent the summer theorizing what was going to happen
I'm fairly sure when I watched Buffy season 4 episode 1 on the BBC I wondered where she was. I'm not sure what the gap was in the UK when Angel season 1 aired as it was on a different channel to Buffy which from what I remembered butchered it in the edit as it was shown at teatime
There is a lil wonkiness & patchy spots in season 1, but imo, it does get better and very enjoyable. There are several instances I know George is going to cry, lol. Run react, George. Excited for your start on this and the latter seasons of Buffy :).
George Welcome to the other part of The Buffyverse. Give it time it's a brilliant show. This was a strong opener Angel as a character has so much depth in this. Great to see Cordy too, and along with Doyle a great trio in the beginning. Great crossover episodes and plotlines too with BTVS. If you keep to a watch order it will make a bit more sense but if you are going to do alternative episodes you will enjoy it the same. Enjoy the show, IMHO the very best episodes of Angel are easily a match for BTVS and many surpass it. Enjoy Angel, you will love it. Good Luck.
I'm not as big a fan of Angel as I am Buffy but I will be following it with you. I do love the tonal shift it has to the darker vibe which is accentuated through those great scene cuts, the night time city shots, creepier themes and a dryer, more adult type of humour. I was just wondering...did you know Cordy would be in it before you saw her in the credits?
Gotta admit I didn't like Angel UNTIL the series Angel. And I never shipped Buffy and Angel until he left for LA 😂 I think the writers in Buffy never had the screen time to work out Angel's personality properly, but in his own show they really managed to give him all the character and character development he needed. Also, Cordy is life❤ So glad you loved the series opener. Loved your reaction. Cheers!

Welcome to Angel. Angel aired on Tuesday nights after Buffy. The challenge for the writers and Joss Whedon was to first keep the audience watching Buffy and then to expand the audience demographics. You will have comments about the show finding it’s identity but the first priority was the show itself make sure the Buffy audience became attached. They do a great job of accomplishing their goal and by the season2, Angel was creating and holding a significant sized audience that was different than BTVS. There are millions of fans around the world that watched Angel first and preferred it over BTVS. This may explain some of the stories early in the show but soon you will not only see the difference but appreciate Angel on its own stand alone merits. We did not know that Cordelia was on Angel that first night. It was only after the end of Buffy that one of us asked out loud, Where’s Cordy ? Freshman had us so involved that we did not realize that she was not in the episode and we did not have the tech to see the opening credits. It was a big crowd pleaser seeing her in the opening credits of Angel. It was a solid first night and soon Tuesday became Buffyverse night.its only Bangel if they are together, being in 2 cities on the same night didn’t count. Good catch on the phone call Angel makes to Buffy, none of us caught it. Great reaction and happy you enjoyed the show.
I'll say back in the day when I first heard Cody was going to be on the Angel spin-off that seemed so random to me and I had my doubts that pairing would work. Boy was I wrong. They balanced each other beautifully.

Great pilot. You need to be patient with season 1, though. There are some great highlights in the first 10 episodes, but it takes about that long, maybe 12 episodes for the show to find its footing.
They hired an entirely new makeup team for Angel, and Joss Whedon made them take lessons from the Buffy team after he saw this episode. This is the only one with the terrible vampire makeup.
I love Glenn Quinn and Christian Kane but I have never watched Angel. Please don't come for me but Angel and Cordelia were never my favorite characters. LOL Watching may be worth it for a shirtless Christian though.
Don't expect a lot of shirtless Christian in this show. It does happen, but it's rare. xD Have you watched Leverage? Another amazing show with him in it!
