I now live in Surrey, but I was born in South Shields in 1937. A few years ago, I revisited the town and decided to check-out the place where I was born. Even though the actual house had been demolished in the 1960s, I knew exactly where it had once stood by examining old maps. All I had to do was to head for the Lawe Top, gain admission to the Arbeia Roman Fort, find the north perimeter wall and stand on the flattened ruins of the northern gate! I had reached the spot where I was born! 150 Edith Street! This street, together with Henry Street, had been built in the northern area of the Fort in the late 1870s. Baring Street School occupied the southern area of the Fort. And a few houses near the Beacon still stand over the northeastern perimeter area. It seemed odd to me standing there that day, that those Victorians allowed these buildings to go ahead on this historical site! The Fort is now hugely impressive, and should be better known!
Great video! Brings back happy memories of when my son and I were Earthwatch volunteers helping to excavate the foundation of one of the fort's walls many years ago.

I presume that row of terraced houses are on top of the fort. If so, they should be pulled down so the full site can be revealed. Fantastic video
