Such a rare thing to have a master player and a master educator embodied within the same person. Great stuff JH!
Yesssssss!
yes! totally
@UkuleleTonya, the Ukulele Jazz course is aimed at intermediate players. Anyone who can play a B-flat chord is overqualified to start the course! It gets more challenging toward the end... but by then you’ll be ready for it. 👍
You are a very GENEROUS man and we are grateful to you for lifting our ukulele playing from the mundane!
Great video 😀
My answer to why C6 = Am7 = Notes G C E A
C major is C D E F G A B C (no sharps or flats), so C6 is C major chord (1,3,5 notes of the major scale) plus the major 6th = C E G + A
A minor is A B C D E F G A (no sharps or flats), so Am7 is A minor chord (1,3,5 notes of the minor scale) plus the 7th note of the minor scale = A C E + G. The 7th here, G, is one whole tone (two frets) down from the root note A.
A minor is the relative minor scale to C major. The relative minor scale starts on the 6th note of the major scale, and has the same number of sharps and flats as the major scale (none for C major).
So upset I found this after Christmas.
Still gonna try it though ;)
James, thanks for a great short-short class. Good stuff and impeccable timing!
Jim you are a great instructor. So laid back. I am so looking forward to learning this for next holiday season. 🎄
Thanks, J Liz!
Thank you so much. Love how subtly and easily you guided us through a snazzy sounding version of Deck the Halls, weaved that ii-V7-I progression in there, hipped us to chord shapes and harmonic rhythm and graced us with your absolutely beautiful voice and expert playing. Easy to see why you are known as the best. And I bet a lot of people figured out why C6 and Am7 are the same chord. (hint, hint....chord tones) Thanks again.
Looking forward to this! Love chord twins!
Merry Christmas, James.
From Laura (UKe)
Enjoy! Happy holidays, Laura.
What an amazingly gifted teacher you are!
This is so much fun! And you make it so easy! Merry Christmas James, Janelle and little one!
Another winner. Thanks!! Have a merry Christmas!!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! ❤️🎄☃️🦌🌺. Thank you so much. Love how you teach.

Great information! Thanks for the lesson, James!
Really cool, really interesting and a challenge of transition. I'll endeavor to get a bit closer by next Christmas. Have an excellent Christmas, James - you're awesome! Best wishes from the UK 🇬🇧
Fabulous as usual! Mahalo Nui Loa and Mele Kalikimaka!
What a treat! Thanks James
Thank you so much. This lesson was great fun.
Can’t wait! 😍😍😍
James you are a gem, when you break it down into that 2 jazzy chords then add the filler Am7 / C6 then slip in an easy Dm7 away we go....Many thanks and Merry Christmas
This is beautiful! Thank you!!! 🎉
Always nice to have that I vi ii7 V7+9 for a Christmas carol!
Don’t forget that good old ‘V7sus2b9b5:aug6+(420xadd#13)=tritone substitute chord’!!
Merry Christmas James. Hope you have a great Yule.
Thanks, Stu. And to you as well!
I love this!
Great video, and a great way to open a discussion about basic harmony...
The simple explanation for why the open strings on a uke are two different chords is as simple as knowing that the notes for both those chords are the same. C6 is C,E,G,A . Aminor7 has the same notes in a different order (A,C,E,G)...those four notes happen to be the same notes as the open strings on a ukulele.
The slightly more involved reason why they are called different things has to do with harmony, and the way we use different flavors of chords in different places.
I look at it a lot like any other form of communication.
Context is everything...
If I say "whatever you want honey" after a big argument, that is a completely different meaning than the same sentence when we are deciding on what to order at a restaurant on 'date night".
If I play the open strings on a uke at the end of a song that happens to be in C major, it sounds like a final chord...a resolution (although, not the best choice of a version for that chord)
If I play the same strings and then play a D7 and then a G major that exact same chord takes on a completely different meaning and tension.
once you start to get into chord "voicings" we enter territory that requires a much larger map.
greetings of the season everyone
Awesome 👏
Merry Christmas! Blue Christmas works with the Hawaiian Twins, plus open C6 and Gdim7.
Thank You! 🎶😎🎶
Thank you- fun
I’m adding James Hill to the wrap pack!

You are a best, men

Legend 👆🏻
Thank you!
I started playing in april, ukulele (concerto is my favorite) is my lockdown gif! I appreciate a lot your way of teaching: sharp , effettive and amusing too!
❤❤❤❤❤
A-7 vs C6 is about determined by what the bass will play
Hi James, Thank you for sharing this! What program do you use to put your sheet music together? Thank you
Oh. Das war schön erklärt. Ist zwar nicht mein Lied... aber die Harmonie ist schön.
Hello James, what a Surprise - looking forward to your lesson. Tried the link for the free sheet music Paper for it, but it does not work 🤔 Kind regards from Germany, Bettina
Ah! You're one step ahead of me. Please try again now. See you soon!
@@jameshillmusiq Thanks so much 😊 ... See you later, Bettina
Recommending this to several ukulele playing friends. Is your ukulele headstock damaged or is that how the finish was done? Merry Christmas from a former Ukulele Way student.
Thanks, Martin. That's the way the headstock was designed. It's a lovely instrument by Pat Megowan patmegowan.com/
Is it too late to get the chord chart? Happy Holidays. Thank you for sharing your wonderful talent!
Sure thing, Steve. You can get the chart from www.uketropolis.com/deckthehalls. Enjoy!

Hi James. Can we watch this later or live time only?
It will be there for all time! The "live" aspect is just the premiere and chat. :)
Im the 700th like. :)
Which Ukelele is best for beginners ? But one thing is I know how to play the guitar so which Ukelele is best for me?
If you already know guitar you should consider baritone ukulele. Same string names! Check out www.uketropolis.com/baritonejazz. Have fun!
The chord that you suggest * in bar 12 as a G7 (b9 b5) is merely a Db7 chord. Tritone substitution for the Dominant G9 movement to C6. Why would you think that naming it a G7 (b9 b5) is easier to explain or understand?
Great question. You’re right about the tritone sub. But showing it as a G7(b9b5) tells the bass player to play a G, not a Db.
@@jameshillmusiq Thanks for explaining the reason. Love what you do.
The notes of an A minor 7 chord are A-C-E-G and the notes of the C6 are C-E-G-A same notes, same chord different name.
hope you don't mind me saying: that those chords would sound much better if they had major minor passing cords in between them because those jazz chords sound too much the same.
I am left handed is the print out ofvthis. It really can be bad for a begginer????, I know Paul McCartney worked it out.
