  • This is the 2015 International gold-medalist barbershop quartet "Instant Classic" singing an original barbershop tag I composed, called "Clouds On Fire". It was definitely a highlight of my barbershop life! The sheet music can be found here:

    Outdoors, no building acoustics, no sound engineering…the tuning and blend is as close to perfect as you’ll get in that environment. Just fabulous.

    The overtones are so clear that it changes the chord on the first "fire" from an F minor chord to an Fm add2 and creates a super spicy crunch

    It’s so in tune the overtones are ringing super loudly

      The loudest over one goes from a half step above the tonic -> the tonic and it’s so satisfying

      If you listen carefully, with great headphones, you may also perceive an undertone on the last chord -- one ([edit] or two?) octave(s) below the melody. Also, thank you for listening! :)

      @@TerryTags I’ve heard that undertones do not naturally exist, and I don’t see how scientifically it would exist. Where would these undertones be coming from?

      @@scarcat2469 undertones are experienced when the brain hears a lot of overtones and fills in the fundamental that isn’t there. At least, that is the way I’ve heard it explained.

      @@ilikebass6818 Your brain perceives the undertone, even though it's not really there, because it's implied by the relationship between the higher harmonics, which are incredibly in tune. Basically your brain is wired to relate these overtones to their fundamental and therefore "fills in the gap" for you. You can read more here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missing_fundamental

      A, C, F, G :)

      @@Graham_M correct! It starts in F minor, but on the last chord, I put the Bass on the Picardy 3rd. The Lead stays on F during the post, the Baritone is on the 5th, and the Tenor is on the "Add2" (some people say it's the 9th, but it's whichever term you prefer)

      I can confidently assure you that they did not switch, as I am the person who: wrote the tag, taught them the tag, took this video of them singing the tag, and then posted this video to my channel. But... I've been wrong before, so ... [shrug] ;-)
