Transcribing your videos is a great way to easily repurpose your content or generate video descriptions. Here’s the BEST way to do transcription automatically (oh, and it’s also free!).
You might have heard Google (Google Now), Apple (Siri) and Microsoft (Cortana) have been investing a LOT in their virtual assistant apps over the past few years. The voice recognition in these services is getting pretty amazing - even for my Aussie accent! With the amount these guys are investing, it's not hard to see why they can generate results a lot of the built-for-purpose software packages just cant match when transcribing audio.
I'll show you how to make the most of these services for transcribing your videos - the best free way to automatically transcribe video: Audio to Text.

This is hands down a fantastic video tip! I would add that with my old PC I found uploading the file and playing on my PC while the google docs is recording gave me the best outcome. I then shifted the text into otranscribe to polish the text before saving in my drive!

Wow! I was ready to pay someone to transcribe something for me or purchase a software. This method is absolutely amazing. Free, and literally within 2 minutes I saw the magic. Just downloaded Google Docs on android. Opened a new doc. selected the microphone, held it down, and played the video on my pc and the transcriptions started appearing on my cellphone. Amazing. Loved it. Thank you!!!

Just did this using a double-male 3.5mm jack cable. One end. plugged into my speakers, the other plugged into my "microphone in" socket. Transcribed an hour of video with something like 95% accuracy. Saved me a lot of time and hassle. Thanks Justin.

Justin, I tried this several times and the Google voice recorder only records at most 3 sentences worth before it stops. Maybe it's freezing up or something but neither method seems to work for me.
Real helpful, this is going to make it so much easier than listening through an entire video myself

You can use an audio y on the headphones/speaker out on the pc and run a 3.5mm audio patch from the y to the mic input on the pc and eliminate background noise all together
+Justin Woods I've heard of this working for some people but I personally haven't tried it.
You can also use a software like "Virtual Audio Cable" to do the same thing just without the cable ;-)

THANK YOU! You're right, the phone transcribe works better. It's not 100% perfect, but it's perfect enough to fill in the blanks. This is going to save me a TON of money, and time, by not having to transcribe myself OR take notes on calls. Brilliant! I'm kicking myself...I use these tools everyday, but never thought to use them for my business. Man...

You are most welcome Justin. :) I was looking for some software that could transcribe some videos and audios that I agreed to transcribe, but it would take A LOT less time to just correct the odd mistakes and insert all the commas, periods etc. if the main text was already in place. Haven’t tried the phone version yet but I will. Now I am just looking for software that will slow down the speech a little as google voice sometimes struggles to keep up with faster speach. Very helpful, trying to write a book on a sports team we covered last year, have about 35 3-5 minute video interviews to transcribe. Will try out both processes and let you know what works. Best, Ken
Very good and to the point very useful video. I knew something like this had to exist, already tied into something I already had by default. So thanks, for this is exactly what I needed, to transcribe some audio on RUclips. I had no need to down load dragon or a third party application this did exactly what I wanted straight away, so a huge help. Thank you.

Thanks for this Justin. I used VB-Audio's Virtual Cable (originally written for Windows 98 apparently!) in the end but this video pointed me in that direction.

Just tried your second method with your YT video and it worked pretty well...obviously have to listen again to punctuate etc to make sense when just reading. Will try with my British accent to see. If it works with you lovely voice then hopefully it will work with mine. Thanks for the tip.

I'd also recommend the free trial of Descript if you cant play the whole thing out-loud, and you don't need it perfect. (I live in a small apartment and I had a 90 min interview i had to edit, so a quick and rough transcription was a life-saver). But I definitely prefer your method for shorter recordings, thanks!

Use a simple 3.5mm mic plug extender cable short cut line out and mic in and you have no background noise and can use this instead of smartphone. Especially from device to device and recording length there is a huge chance to fail or at least delay in the transcript.

thanks for the help , i was a bit stumped at first couldn't find the microphone on my phone app as the one for the laptop wasn't on and i had no idea where it was ,so i trie the phon ,taped the video couldn't understand why it didnt transcribed watch yours again then went on my drive app and got google docs and from there it was easy enough as in the meantime i kept touching button on keys and found the microphone , like others said it stopped transcribing but then i realise from another video i watched previously it doesn' t like pauses it confuses the process so i had to stay next to my phone to click back the microphone symbol eveyr now and then , of course i still had to go back to add words here and there but for the most part happy as it saved me a crazy amount of time and will now use this method and share with other newbies like me
