Roger had (at one time) farmeri x griffithianum and the reverse cross and chrysotoxum (which don't require a hard rest), as well as lindleyi and jenkinsii (both of which NEED a hard rest; dry, no feed, cool rest). The thing with the callista section, they put out a spectacle of blooms but they are short lived, 10-14 days. You've mounted them upside down. As hard cane Dens, they grow their canes upright, not pendulous. So your new growths are going to grow the opposite direction of the old ones. My griffithianum and thyrsiflorum are both mounted with the base about 1/3 of the way down from the top of the mount (squarish pieces of cork), so the roots can go down the mount and the plants stick out the top. In your growing space, it is more space efficient for them to be grown in a pot or you have to hang the mount really low.
Yeah I was a bit disappointed to read about the short-lived blooms, but sometimes that makes it more special when they're blooming. Take a Magnolia tree for example. Or a Cherry tree. If they bloomed for months it wouldn't be half as special as when it's a rare event. That's what I'm telling myself anyway...Re the Dend. Densiflorum - I've got a photo of it growing wild in the crook of a branch. Many canes are upright, but many are hanging down too. Having said, I'll take your word for it and move on to Plan B. As soon as I've got a Plan B! I'm thinking perhaps a small mesh basket then place into a clay pot for stability. Bark and sphagnum. Then where to put them might just be an unsolvable problem.🤷♂️🤣

Geoff, I don't think it's going to work. First of all you only re-pot this type when new growth starts growing roots. Secondly, I would cut off most of those leafless canes (they have no roots anyway) and turn the orchid 180° vertically and horizontally. Also I think it would be much better in a pot. Well, that's what I would do.

I prefer to use an app for the camera rather than iPhone's built in app. I use a free one called ProMovie. 3. I don't use the phone's built-in audio as it's useless. Ah well, now you come to mention it...both Dendrobiums haven't budged in growth since then. They've been having a winter rest, but I'm not starting to water until I get some movement from them. To be honest, since that video was made, I now think they'd be better in baskets so that's something I'll consider should they spring back to life with some new growth.

Helped mainly by me knocking them over by catching them when moving other things around 😁 so mounting them to keep them in their place seems like a good idea to me lol. I've only mounted two of my orchids so far and you defintely need 8 pairs of hands to do it lol. Yours are looking good and I hope your lovely anniversary presents thrive for you 😊. I'm making good use of every single thing you sent me and I'm still smiling about my lovely prize 😁. O Densiflorum está realmente em plena floração agora. Se você der uma olhada no meu Instagram (link na descrição de cada vídeo) vai poder ver. Soaking the whole thing for awhile will make it easy to clean up the old media... less good root damage. Happy anniversary!

The dends in the callista types grow really well here, and only need protection if we get a hard freeze.
I've got them in the cooler side so hopefully they'll grow well there.
Those two dendrobiums are native here in my region and they do need a winter rest even though they are evergreen.

Both are excellent choices, there's a few like them are similar, D fameri, D griffithianum and so forth, I have griffithianum. Pretty easy growers.
